HOW TO READ A MANGAManga

, pictorial narratives which can range rom simple comic strips to elaborately illustrated graphicnovels, is arguably modern Japans most potent and creative orm o literary expression. Manga in itscontemporary orm emerged during the years o US occupation ollowing Japans de eat in World War II.The medium was heavily in uenced by American popular culture, including comics, cartoons, televisionand lm. But the antecedents o manga can be traced back centuries to wartime propaganda posters, earlywoodblock prints and even ancient scroll drawings.

In modern Japan, manga has become a multi-billion dollar industry. Serialized manga , in an array o di -erent genre, attract readers o all ages. Globally, the orm has inspired imitators in a kaleidoscope o difer-

ent languages, and in uenced the work o writers, illustrators and lm producers rom many cultures. Thuswe thought manga a natural ormat or contemplating Japans uture. To that end we invited Peter Tasker economist, novelist, uent Japanese speaker and li etime manga connoisseur to team with veteran Japa-nese manga artist Toshio Ban in creating an original manga or the digital version o Reimagining Japan.The result o their collaboration pays homage to the tradition o British satirists and also the great Japanesenovelist Natsume Soseki, whose novel I Am a Cat, rst published in serialized orm between 1905-06,
