Hyundai New Thinkers Summit:

Innovation and Climate Science Youth Summit4-6 October 2013

EVALUATION REPORT

Objectives

seeks to empower the youth through science education

as well as to address the need for more science

professionals in the country

brought together students and teachers from 39 schools

in Luzon in a series of lectures, hands-on-activities, fora

and plenary sessions in youth leadership, ethics,

innovation and climate science

Description of the Summit

a part of a yearlong program that includes an “Innovation and

Climate Science Camp” to be held in summer next year and a

culminating activity entitled Hyundai New Thinkers Spotlight

prior to next year’s school opening seek to empower the youth

through science education as well as to address the need for

more science professionals in the country

aims to develop creative thinking and leadership among high-

school students in helping solve real climate-related problems in

their communities, and enhance their interests in science and

technology careers particularly in geology and oceanography

Highlights of Evaluation Findings

On aspects/components of the Summit◦ In general, the highest rated aspect is about the

contribution to students’ awareness, knowledge, and understanding about science, particularly climate change and other related topics. On the other hand, the management and allotment of time ranked the lowest among the statements rated by the respondents

◦ Statements on the organizers as efficient, helpful, and accommodating, availability of equipment, and suitability of facilities also got high ratings.


On topics learned

◦ Climate change for teachers and Youtalk

(Leadershift) were among the highly scored

topics learned as assessed by the respondents

◦ However, Youtranform (Kin+Ethics) and


Interaction were the low-ranked topics.


On activities conducted

◦ The highly rated activities were Ocean

Streams and Coastal Adaptation while Star

Party and Case Study were the low-scored

activities


On speakers per topic

◦ Speakers in Youtalk (Leadershift), Impact of

Climate Change in Hydrogeology, Climate Change

Mitigation, and Climate Change for Teachers were

all assessed as giving clear and interesting

presentation with high scores given by the

respondents.

◦ On the other hand, speakers in Youtransform

(Kin+Ethics) and Impacts of Climate Change on

Biodiversity (Hydrogeology) got relatively low

scores.


On topic respondents like the MOST

◦ A significant proportion of both student-respondents and teacher-respondents chose Youtalk (Leadershift) as the topic they like the most.

On topic respondents like the LEAST

◦ Youtransform (Kin+Ethics) had the highest percentage of student-respondents liking the topic the least.


On activity respondents like the MOST

◦ Significant proportion of respondents identified

Survival of the Fittest and Coastal Adaptation as

activities they like the most.

On activity respondents like the LEAST

◦ However, some of the student-respondents found

the Survival of the Fittest and Exposed as activities

they like the least.


On rate of overall experience

◦ More than half of the respondents (both among

students and teachers) rated the over-all

experience in the Summit as well above

expectations.


On preferred college course of student-

respondents before and after the summit

◦ There were seven (7) cases of student-

respondents who changed their choice of

college degree from non-S&T course to S&T

course.



◦ There were forty-three (43) positive comments

from the student-respondents: 20 congratulatory

remarks, 14 commendations, and 9 thankful

statements.

◦ Thirty-five (35) suggestions were given by student-

respondents. Most of them were about

improvement on time management and increase of

physical and interactive activities. Longer summit

duration and improvement on food preparation

were also suggested by some students.



◦ There were thirty-four (34) positive comments

from the teacher-respondents: 11 congratulatory

remarks, 11commendations, and 12 thankful

statements.

◦ Twenty-three (23) suggestions were given by

teacher-respondents. Most of them were about

improvement on time management and more

activities for teachers. Longer summit duration and

improvement on food preparation were also

suggested by some teachers.
