Introduction

This hymn setting series is designed to accompany the congregation singing hymns of the Lutheran heritage using a variety of instruments, several of which may be associated with a “contemporary ensemble” (piano, guitar, bass, etc.). The following scores are included:

1. Full Score: includes all instruments and guitar chords. The full score is most useful to a conductor or perhaps to a keyboard player leading from the piano.

2. Solo Instrument Scores: The setting has been written to include a solo instrument, and multiple transpositions have been provided for substituting instruments: • C instruments: flute, violin, oboe • B-flat instruments: clarinet, trumpet in B-flat • E-flat instruments (some portions octave lower): saxophone in E-flat;

some passages have been written an octave lower, others include optional cue notes an octave lower

• All parts include cue notes of the melody for optional doubling 3. Piano/Guitar Score: Piano paired with guitar chords. 4. Bass Guitar Score

NOTE: the text has been purposefully omitted. “Jesus Sinners Does Receive” is frequently paired with this tune, but others are also paired with it, such as “Come, O Precious Ransom, Come.” Three accompaniment variations with an introduction and interludes are provided in this setting, along with instructions for where to navigate in the score to vary the order and number of times each setting is used over the course of accompanying an entire hymn.
