Lantz Berets brings a diverse background to his compositions. A graduate of Western Washington University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he has served as a bassoonist in the United States Air Force Band program and as a Minister of Music. Now in the music retail business, he finds time to compose, play the and teach bassoon, conduct his church choir and orchestra, and conduct both the Debut Orchestra of Student

Orchestras of Greater Olympia and the New Horizons Orchestra of Olympia.

I wrote Hymn for Band for the wind section of the orchestra that I conduct, the Debut Winds of Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia. I was looking to write something that would give students practice in breathing properly and maintaining good tone over a longer period of time. What emerged was a simple melody which reminded me of a hymn. Hymn for Band uses an original tune—it is not an arrangement of a standard hymn. There is no text, and in fact Hymn for Band would be difficult to sing because of the range. However, there is an implied word, the two-syllable “amen” that occurs throughout. This notion of “amen” is confirmed by the plaegel cadence at the end of the piece. As I wrote I began to see this piece as a story about the conflict between good and evil, right and wrong. In the end good triumphs, but not without struggle. May we all be encouraged as we seek to oppose evil and do what is right. Lantz Berets
