L: May God open our mouths and our hearts P: Let us worship God!

Gathering Distant Land John Rutter

I see a distant land: it shines so clear. Sometimes it seems so far, sometimes so near. Come, join together, take the dusty road; Help one another: share the heavy load. The journey may be long: no end

in sight: There may be hills to climb, or giants to fight: But if you'll take my hand, We'll walk together toward the land of freedom.

I hear a distant song: it fills the air. I hear it, deep and strong, rise up in prayer: 'O Lord, we are many; help us to be one. Heal our divisions: let thy will be done.' I know the time will come when war

must cease: A time of truth and love, a time of peace. The people cry, 'How long? Til all our world can join the song of freedom.’

I touch a distant hand and feel its glow, The hand I hoped was there: at last I know. Swords into ploughshares: can it all be true? Friends out of strangers: start with me and you. I see another time,

another place Where we can all be one, one human race. The walls will melt away, We'll come together on the day of freedom.

*Call To Worship

L: The call of freedom has been sounded. It calls each one of us to work in our place; in our humanity; in our world. All: May the spirit of freedom break the spell of our fear and allow us to become obedient rebels, lovers of life and active members of the Kingdom of God.

*Hymn For the Healing of the Nations Fred Kaan

Epistle Lesson Galatians 5:1; 13-26 Common English Bible

5 1 Christ has set us free for freedom. Therefore, stand firm and don’t submit to the bondage of slavery again. 13 You were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only don’t let this freedom be an opportunity to indulge your selfish impulses, but serve each other through love. 14 All the Law has been fulfilled in a single statement: Love your neighbor as yourself. 15 But if you bite and devour each other, be careful that you don’t get eaten up by each other!

16 I say be guided by the Spirit and you won’t carry out your selfish desires. 17 A person’s selfish desires are set against the Spirit, and the Spirit is set against one’s selfish desires. They are opposed to each other, so you shouldn’t do whatever you want to do. 18 But if you are being led by the Spirit, you aren’t under the Law. 19 The actions that are produced by selfish motives are obvious, since they include sexual immorality, moral corruption, doing whatever feels good, 20 idolatry, drug use and casting spells, hate, fighting, obsession, losing your temper, competitive opposition, conflict, selfishness, group rivalry, 21 jealousy, drunkenness, partying, and other things like that. I warn you as I have already warned you, that those who do these kinds of things won’t inherit God’s kingdom.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against things like this. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the self with its passions and its desires.

25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s follow the Spirit. 26 Let’s not become arrogant, make each other angry, or be jealous of each other.

L: The Word of the Lord P: Thanks be to God.

Sermon The Color of Freedom Becky Matheny

Response Many Colors Paint the Rainbow Roy Hopp

Many colors paint the rainbow arching over land and sea; Many colors form the fabric of our human tapestry;

God with joy and hope has made us with a pattern God had planned; Weaving varied threads together with a skilled and loving hand.

Many people bring their treasures as those kings who travelled far; Drawn from all earth’s scattered places, drawn to Christ, the shining star;

All may offer gifts to others, and from them receive in turn; In the gathering of the nations, help us, God, to teach and learn.

Many faces at our tables, wait for freedom in our God; For God comes in love to meet us in the Loaf, the Cup, the Word;

All are welcome; None rejected; Bound by God in unity; Naming others sisters; brothers; in a world wide family.

Many voices sing God’s praises in a language all their own; Tongues confused at Babel’s tower now are joined around God’s throne.

Free our hearts of hate and discord ‘til our lives in concert blend; Alleluia! Alleluia! This our anthem without end.

The Giving, *Presentation and Blessing of our Gifts

L: We give thanks for all that God has given us. P: May God bless all that we offer: our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service.

*Passing of the Peace L: The Lord be with you! P: And also with you! Greet one another with signs of peace.

*Song of Fellowship Surely The Presence Lanny Wolfe

Prayers of the People

~ Silent Prayer - Sharing of Requests ~ Pastoral Prayer - Lord’s Prayer ~

Response This Is My Song Sibelius / Briehl

Our Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom,

And the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
