SYNTHESIS & CHARACTERIZATION OF

HYDROXYAPATITE POWDER

Thesis Title2

CONTENTS INTRODUCTION OBJECTIVES WORK PLAN LITERATURE REVIEW CONCLUSION REFERENCES

3

INTRODUCTION

Hydroxyapatite is a Calcium phosphate ceramic that is used as a

biomaterial.

Hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] is a newly introduced bio-ceramic

with composite similar to bone and teeth.

Inorganic phase of our bones is apatite.

It is chemically similar to mineral compound of bones

and tissues in mammals.

4

What type of materials we will use

Calcium Nitrate Tetra Hydrate, Ca(NO3)2.4H2O as Calcium source

Phosphoric Pentoxide (P2O5) as Phosphorous source

Ethanol as solvent

5

OBJECTIVES

To synthesize Hydroxyapatite powder by sol-gel method .

To characterize the powder of hydroxyapatite.

6

Methodology 7

Problem statement8

Many of the researchers have synthesized and charectarized hydroxyl apatite powder by different methods and raw materials. None of them have showed the comparison of crystal growth in different sintering temperature.

Literature Review. Authors Name Outcomes

Khelendra Agrawal, Gurbhinder Singh, Devendra Puri, Satya Prakash (2011)

Synthesis and Characterization of Hydroxyapatite Powder by Sol-GelMethod for Biomedical Application.

Formation of pure, stable, good crystalline nano sized HA powder at low temperature maximum (750˚C)

Gre´ta Gergel (2010)

Preparation and characterization of hydroxyapatite from eggshell.

Crystalline growth of powder is more efficient than previous .

Agnieszka Sobczak(2009)

Preparation of hydroxyapatite from animal bones

Sintering below 1200°C are expected to favour formation of nano scale composite particles with satisfactory microstructural, thermal stability.

11

Literature Review Authors Name outcomes

Envy. Kusrini (2012) Preparation of Hydroxyapatite from Bovine Bone by Combination Methods of Ultrasonic and Spray Drying.

Particles agglomeration become fast and powder formed at comparelly lower sintering temp.

12

Causes of choosing sol-gel Causes of choosing sol-gel processprocess

13

Low process temperature.Fine sized particles.Rapid agglomeration can be avoided.Efficiency of crystal phase growth is high

compares to other methods.

Moreover ,We can take complete facility from laboratory for this process that’s why we choose the sol-gel method for our thesis experiment.

Conclusion

Hydroxyapatite is an important inorganic biomaterial which has attracted the attention of researchers related to biomaterials field in recent years. Many of the researchers synthesized the powder in different methods. We prefer sol-gel to synthesize it.By changing the parameter and sintering temperature we will modulate the chemical, structural and morphological properties of synthetic HAP.
