SkillS teSt 1listening I’m a DJ in a nightclub. I work late at night, so my life is very different from normal people. I start work at eight o’clock in the evening. I often go out to a restaurant or café to have dinner before I go to work. The club closes at two in the morning, so I usually work until half past two. I take a taxi home, I have a shower, and I go to bed around three-thirty. I sleep all morning. When I get up, it’s usually around mid-day, so I never have breakfast. I just have lunch at around half past twelve. I like cooking, so I always make lunch myself. I often watch cookery programmes on TV, too. I like trying new recipes, and I get a lot of good ideas from television. My afternoon is free, and I often go to the gym, or I go swimming. Then, in the early evening, I work an hour or two on the set that I want to play in the club, you know, the music and the videos. When I have time, I read newspapers or play some computer games. I don’t have free weekends, so I have free time when others are at work – usually on Mondays and Tuesdays. I love my job!

SkillS teSt 2listeningWalter Excuse me, are you Professor Ramírez?Angela Yes, I am. Walter Oh, my name’s Schmidt, Walter Schmidt –

Angela You probably know the city quite well, then. Is there a good swimming pool nearby?

Walter Yes, there’s a very nice pool in your hotel. Angela Really?Walter Yes, it’s a spa hotel, so you can go for a

swim or have a massage after the conference.

Angela Fantastic! Is there a tennis court, too?Walter No, there isn’t. But there are tennis courts

in the university park. The conference centre is in the park, too.

Angela Can you play tennis?Walter Yes, I can. Angela Do you want to play a game of tennis on

Saturday? I’m in Camford until Monday.Walter Sure. What time?

hotel and walk to the park together. It’s only a five-minute walk.

Angela Great. Now, I have a few questions about the conference, too…

SkillS teSt 3listening1My name is Maria and I come from Lima - that’s the capital of Peru in South America. It has a population of around 8 million. It’s a big city with rich and poor people living there. But lots of tourists visit the city – to see the historic centre and the old Spanish architecture. The food in Lima is famous, and there are some great restaurants. I love ceviche – a dish made with raw fish and lime juice. It’s delicious!

3It was the year men first landed on the moon. It was the year Edward Norton and Catherine Zeta-Jones were born. And it was the year this song was number 1 in the United States. The band is, of course, The Beatles, and the song’s called ‘Come Together’, from the Abbey Road album. It was their twenty-sixth number 1 in the US. Let’s hear it now ... Come Together ... and The Beatles!

SkillS teSt 4listening1Disc Jockey Well, when you’re not singing in

front of thousands of people, what are you going to do while you’re in London?

Pop star I’m going to do some sightseeing. I really want to see the crown jewels in the Tower of London. And I’m going to visit Madame Tussauds on Baker Street. I’ve also booked tickets to go on the London Eye. You get an amazing view of the city, apparently!

2It’s going to be a cold, windy morning on Thursday, with afternoon temperatures rising to a maximum 15 degrees celsius in the north, and 18 degrees in the south. The good news is that it’s not going to rain, but wind is going to remain strong across the country. Friday’s going to be warmer with temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees. But there will be more clouds and rain at the weekend.

3I think you can get to the station in about ten minutes. Go along the high street, past the supermarket, until you get to the traffic lights at the pedestrian crossing. Don’t cross the street here. Turn right and continue along Station Street, and go under the railway tunnel. Turn right again, and the station entrance is on your right.

4We are sorry to announce that the 11.45 Citylines Express service to Twyford is delayed by 20 minutes. The next train to arrive at Platform 5 is the 11.55 stopping service to Wheatfield. We apologise for the delay to our service this morning.

5And on your right, you can see some colonial stone buildings from the 17th century: the town hall is a good example of this style. The local museum is along this street and over the bridge - but we’re going there tomorrow. Today we’re visiting the famous 19th century railway station. It opened in 1875, and is a lovely example of Victorian architecture.

6BA flight 750 to Dubai departing at 08.25 is now ready for boarding. Please have your passports and boarding cards ready. KLM flight 4452 to Amsterdam is now open for check in. Passengers with e-tickets, please go to check-in desks 14 and 15.

SkillS teSt 5listening 1It was the most exciting day of my life. I had a blue and white dress on, and dark blue shoes. I remember I looked in the mirror, and I thought my clothes looked really pretty. I didn’t know what to expect on the first day, and I didn’t know any of the other children. We only moved to the city two or three weeks before. All the other kids arrived with their parents. I went with my big sister. She held my hand. But I wasn’t scared or worried, I was just really curious about it all. Our form teacher, Ms Kelly, was very friendly. She knew all our names!

2About fifty people came – which was surprising because my wife had only invited twenty. But people told each other about the party, and they all wanted to come. I got a lot of presents, and we had a great time until very late at night! My wife brought out the cake at midnight. It had forty candles on it. I made a wish, and blew out the candles. Do you want to know what my wish was? I would like to celebrate my 50th the same way!

3I have had jobs in a few different places, but the first one was the worst. The headquarters was in the city centre, on the 40th floor of a skyscraper. I walked in, and the receptionist was really unfriendly. I waited for an hour before I could go in to see the manager. He was quite friendly, but he gave me too much to do. I mean, I didn’t even know where the toilets were. And the others were annoyed when I asked them for directions … And it was always so boring! I stayed for two months then I found a better place, and started again.

4I saw her at a birthday party, I think, or maybe it was a New Year’s Eve party, I don’t know… Anyway, what I do remember is that she was beautiful! She had short, blond hair, and warm, brown eyes. She wore a white shirt and blue jeans. I walked up to her and said hi. I told her my name, but I was so excited that I didn’t hear what she said, so I had to ask her again. Three times! It’s embarrassing, isn’t it? But we’ve been together for eleven years now, so I’ve finally learnt her name, I hope …

5There were a lot of people in the hall. We all wore special university gowns, and looked very smart. The dean made a long speech about life and learning. I don’t know how many people actually listened to it! Then she said ‘Congratulations everyone’, and started reading out the names of all the students. We all walked up onto the stage to collect our diploma. People took pictures – there’s one with me smiling, and holding my architect’s degree. It’s right there on my wall now!

6I’m from the US, so I went to a big high school in Michigan, in the mid west. When I left school, it was really sad to know that we’d be going on to do different things – to college, jobs, and different parts of the country. But we had our school prom – which is a big party for all the school leavers. And that was really great.
