DO WE REALLY NEED A SEMI-CONDUCTIVE COATING ON CERAMIC POST INSULATORS?by Goran Stojadinovic
This paper looks into the efficacy of semi-conductive coatings on ceramic post insulators. Goran provides an overview of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), its tendency to occur on pin insulators, and semi-conductive coatings that are used to prevent it, then turns his attention to the effect of these semi-conductive coatings on ceramic post insulators. He finds no evidence that these post insulators get RFI as pin insulators do, making RFI
prevention via semi-conductive coating pointless. Furthermore, he presents case studies internationally and in NZ to support the theory that such coatings could instead have a detrimental effect on ceramic post insulators and conductors, reducing their service life through an increase in electrical stress and even potentially causing RFI.

We're extremely fortunate to introduce Goran Stojadinovic as TransNet's latest talented technical expert. He has worked in the electricity industry for thirty-six years both locally and internationally and brought a wealth of technical knowledge and practical experience to various engineering roles at several of NZ's large electricity network companies, recently as an Innovation & Technologies Manager and an Asset Engineer.
With a passion for innovations and new technologies Goran applies his engineering expertise and innovative technical solutions to solve industry problems. This approach is evident in the dozens of network improvements he has implemented and the two international patents he has obtained. He has written and presented nine Papers - two at EEA and seven at International Conferences, including the CEPSI International Conference in 2014 and in 2016.
Goran's multiple academic qualifications include a Master of Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship from the University of Auckland and a Master of Electrical Engineering from the University of Belgrade, Serbia.
Why does New Zealand have radio silent glaze on post insulators when the rest of the world doesn't? Our technical expert Goran investigates.
