I cannot believe that another amazing instructional year is about to come to an end. If there is one quote that sums up what we have tried to instill in our children and each other, it is this one. “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.- Edith Wharton”
There have been many times this year that our teachers and staff have been a candle for children facing not only academic struggles, but more serious life struggles that no child should face. Other times, we step out of our children’s way in order to see them spread their wings. It is these moments that we simply need to be a mirror reflecting the light that is in each one of our children. When reflecting on this year, we can’t help but celebrate accomplishments and focus on future goals in each area of our Campus Improvement Plan.
Student Experience: HVE students will increase in their perception of affirmation as evidenced 92% of students answering yes to an affirmation survey by the end of the 2016/2017 school year. Through the use of intentional positive notes for every student each nine weeks and facilitating students to reflect upon their work and the work of others through e-portfolios and during DEAR time, we have met our goal. Our end of the year affirmation survey resulted in 92% of our students responding yes.
Student Learning: Hebron Valley 2nd - 5th grade students will increase process standard .1b (critical thinking and problem solving) in math by 10% as evidenced through an average of questions testing this TEKS on CBA and benchmark data by the end of the 2016-17 school year. Unfortunately, we did not quite meet this goal, but with a focus on increase the use of Guided Math and Problem of the Day we had a 5.37% increase.
Resource Stewardship: Funds and School business day allocation will be used to train a small number of teachers to come back to train the campus. These will be prioritized based on improving a campus goal. 24 teachers and staff have presented this year not including Mrs. Zamora and I.
Community Engagement: HVE community (parents, teachers, students, businesses) involvement will increase by 8% as evidenced by a pre and post survey by the end of the 2016-17 school year. We are extremely proud to announce that through the partnership with HHS, CVMS Clubs, Parents, businesses and many non-profit organizations we saw a 93.6% increase in volunteerism this year.

Dear HVE Parents,
It seems only yesterday we were getting invitations for “Meet the Teacher Night” to kick-off the
2016-2017 school year and now we are at the home stretch before we head off into summer.
In retrospect, it has been an amazing year. From hosting “Family Movie Nights” and the Holiday Shop
to “Donuts with Dad”, each event has been well received and thoroughly enjoyed by the students,
teachers and families.
The HVE families went above and beyond in exceeding our goals for the fall/spring book fair and Fun
Run. This allowed the PTA to purchase many items for the school. Our favorite being our Husky
mascot (see pics below).
Family Fun Night even set a record high for attendance! Thank you to Ms. Piggy Carnival Food, Nate’s
BBQ, Bombay Chopsticks, Marco’s Pizza, Kona Snow Cones as well as the many other sponsors for
their generous donations. Check out our Facebook page to take a look: https://www.facebook.com/
HVE.PTA.Huskies/. (And don’t forget to like the page too while there.)
Our vision was to take these wonderful opportunities, that were created with the HVE students and
families, and turn them into lasting memories. Memories that would enhance the students’
experience with excitement and creativity and in turn, the student would take this into the classroom.
As I walk down a classroom hallway or I volunteer in different lunches, I am always greeted by the
same ear-to-ear smile, an excited wave, and a confident walk. By volunteering, you make a difference
in the lives of all of the kids at HVE. They know that your time is valuable and by being at the school
or helping behind the scenes, they feel valued.
So, thank you to all the volunteers who selflessly give their time and their talents to make HVE a great
school! ~Paulina

COUNSELOR’S CORNER:
As we end the year and lots of students (and staff) are tired and maybe a little grouchy it seems like a good time to revisit empathy and compassion. The ability to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, to understand what it feels like to be them, is one of the most valuable character traits we can possess. It helps us get along better and it helps us cope with all the tough situations we may face. Believing in ourselves helps us be more successful as students and adults.
Some ways to help children have more empathy are:
Show them empathy.
Talk about feelings. Theirs, yours, fictional character’s feelings. Connect these feelings to your children. ”Wow Alexander is really angry at his brother. Have you ever been angry at your brother?”
Work to see their viewpoint as often if not more often than you try to force them to see yours. When kids are acting out it’s hard sometimes to put ourselves in their shoes but it’s a great way to stay calm and maintain perspective. You can still give conse-quences while showing empathy and you will be teaching by example.
Don’t wait for your child to feel an emotion before you talk about that emotion. Have them practice putting themselves in other’s shoes. Make up stories or use TV shows or books as examples. It gives them a connection to the feelings without having to have had to experience it themselves. (Allison McDonald #blog4cause)
