Service Information

Hurstville City Council uses the two coloured bin system for household waste in multi-unit dwellingsThis includes:• Twice weekly waste service (red-lid bin)• Weekly recycling service (yellow-lid bin)

Council’s Waste Contractor, WSN Environmental Solutions, will present bins to the kerb and return them to the storage area after collection for residents of multi-unit dwellings (in most cases).

To ensure your bins are emptied:• Make sure your bins do not weigh more than 70kg• Bin lids must be closed completely – overfi lling bins may

result in spillages• Additional material beside or on top of your bin will not

be collected

Child safety Children love garbage trucks. Please supervise them when trucks are about and teach them to stand back and watch from a safe distance.

Recycling service and benefi ts of recycling

Your recycling is separated and sorted at a materials recovery facility and then sent to be reprocessed into new things. Each multi-unit dwelling is allocated a 240L yellow-lid recycling bin which is shared between 3 units and collected weekly. Place recycling in provided bins only, not down a rubbish chute.

Important – your recycling bins will not be collected if they contain incorrect materials. Multiple offences may result in cancellation of your recycling service. Council monitors the recycling service, so make sure you recycle right or call us with any questions.

Plastic – all bottles, containers, trays and tubs

The average Hurstville City household creates 25kg of total waste per week. Much of this is recycled. Thousands in our community do the right thing with their recycling. If you have questions, we’re always here to help you recycle better and recycle right.

By participating in Council recycling collections and making sure we are recycling all our paper, cardboard and containers, we are contributing positively to saving much more than resources.

In 2009, Hurstville residents recycled 8305 tonnes of paper, cardboard and containers. We have diverted 42% of waste from landfi ll and provided benefi ts to the environment that include:

Council can provide you with free bin stickers and bin storage area posters to assist residents in recycling. Call us to order some.

Waste service

Each multi unit dwelling is allocated a 240L red-lid waste bin which is shared between 4 units. The waste service is collected twice weekly.

On-call clean up service and illegal dumping

Hurstville Council has introduced a new on-call clean up service which is available to every household twice a year, anytime throughout the year, at your request.

A clean up date will be provided to you within a practical timeframe of the call being registered and information will be sent to you including a sticker that should be displayed on your clean up materials proving it has been booked in as well as an information brochure for collection.

On-call clean up service and illegal dumping

Residents will no longer be authorised to place materials at the kerbside unless a clean up booking has been made. Bookings will be taken on behalf of Council by its collection contractor, WSN Environmental Solutions. To make a booking just call the Waste Hotline on 1800 079 390.

Only items comfortably handled by two people will be removed. Clean up materials placed out for collection that do not comply will not be removed. The closest Waste Management Centre is located on Lindsay Street Rockdale and can be contacted on 1300 651 116.

Any materials displayed on the kerb that have not

been booked in or are unaccepted materials will

be classed as illegal dumping and residents will

be required to remove them accordingly.

Household Chemical Clean OutThe St George Region has an annual free chemical collection for all hazardous materials such as paint, batteries, light globes, pesticides, cleaners, gas cylinders and smoke alarms found around your home.

Medical WasteMany people rely on needles and syringes to maintain their own health or that of a family member. “Community sharps” refers to the equipment used resulting from these activities. Do not put sharps and syringes into any of your household bins as they pose serious health and safety risks to people and our environment. You can dispose of sharps and syringes at the St George Hospital Needle Exchange or check your local pharmacy. Call the Needle Hotline on 1800 633 353 for more information.
