HURSTBRIDGE LINE – OCTOBER NEW ELECTRICAL SUBSTATIONS The Victorian Government is removing two dangerous and congested level crossings along the Hurstbridge line, building a brand new Rosanna Station, and duplicating the single section of track between Heidelberg and Rosanna stations. This will make communities safer and get commuters in Melbourne’s north east home sooner. To be able to make these improvements and power train services along the Hurstbridge line, we need to install new electrical substations at Fairfield, Eaglemont, Macleod and Diamond Creek. What is a substation and what will it be used for? A substation is an electrical asset owned by VicTrack and operated by Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) to provide the necessary power to operate trains, signals and communication equipment. As part of the Hurstbridge Rail Line Upgrade, the Level Crossing Removal Authority will be constructing four new substations on behalf of MTM. Why do you need more substations along the network? Substations are an integral part of Melbourne's train network. They convert and supply household electricity to operate trains, signals and communication equipment. In order to make improvements to the capacity of the network, such as the duplication of the single-section track between Heidelberg and Rosanna stations, we need to build new substations. By undertaking these upgrades, more trains will be able to run along the Hurstbridge line, ensuring the network can cater for future growth. Across the metropolitan rail network, substations are being added to provide more power for additional train services to run, particularly in the peak periods. Why does the substation need to be located in this specific location? The design, construction and operation of the substations are based on the principle of providing a safe and functional electrical supply, and a number of options have been investigated to determine the location of each substation along the entire rail network. It was recently identified that a substation would need to be constructed near Eaglemont Station, more specifically along Sherwood Road, Ivanhoe. Our modelling identified a gap in the power supply in this location, which has led to the need for a new substation to be constructed in this specific area. The upgrades to the existing substations at Fairfield and Macleod have been identified as points where power modelling needs to be increased. Similarly, the substation at Diamond Creek is going to be relocated as part of the project to service the growing demand on the rail network. levelcrossings.vic.gov.au Authorised and published by the Victorian Government, 1 Treasury Place, Melbourne

HURSTBRIDGE LINE – OCTOBER

NEW ELECTRICAL SUBSTATIONS

The Victorian Government is removing two dangerous and congested level crossings along the Hurstbridge line, building a brand new Rosanna Station, and duplicating the single section of track between Heidelberg and Rosanna stations. This will make communities safer and get commuters in Melbourne’s north east home sooner.

To be able to make these improvements and power train services along the Hurstbridge line, we need to install new electrical substations at Fairfield, Eaglemont, Macleod and Diamond Creek.

What is a substation and what will it be used for?A substation is an electrical asset owned by VicTrack and operated by Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) to provide the necessary power to operate trains, signals and communication

equipment. As part of the Hurstbridge Rail Line Upgrade, the Level Crossing Removal Authority will be constructing four new substations on behalf of MTM.

Why do you need more substations along the network?Substations are an integral part of Melbourne's train network.

Construction timelines

How big are the substations? The dimensions of each substation building will vary depending on the requirements. All substations will be built off-site and will be lifted into place.

The substations will allow for vehicle access and parking. This area will vary but is approximately 20 meters in length at each site.

*Please note that the sizes differ for each substation depending on the requirements. Information specific to each substation can be provided upon request

**The substation will sit on foundations that are around 1.2 metres high. This is to allow for all operational cables to be fed into the substation and provides access for maintenance at all times.

Will the substation affect my health and wellbeing?Substations are common throughout Melbourne and do not impact health and wellbeing of surrounding residents.

Detailed reports and further information relating to the health and noise of substations can be found on our website.
