Don't risk your pet's life by waiting for the next hurricane or tropical storm to make your plans.

There are some things you can do RIGHT NOW to protect your furry or feathered friends.

Hurricanes present unique challenges to pet owners.

But they're not without solutions.Let's take a closer look.

Page 7: Hurricane Pet Preparedness

The Challenge: Because not all evacuation shelters allow pets, many unprepared families with pets are turned away.

The Solution: Call your local officials in advance to find out about pet-friendly shelters. Some vets and boarding facilities also allow pets during severe weather. Tip: Make plans early to secure your pet’s spot.

The Challenge: Your pet gets nervous in uncertain situations or during severe weather.

The Solution: Use a pet carrier, which offers a safe, familiar space. Not only that, but many pet shelters require pet carriers -- particularly for small dogs and cats. Be sure to label the carrier with all personal and contact information, as well as relevant medical data.Tip: Do a few trial runs first to make sure your pet is comfortable!

The Challenge: Your pet isn’t up to date on vaccinations and therefore cannot be admitted to boarding facilities.

The Solution: Long before the arrival of hurricane season, make sure your pet is current on all vaccinations.Tip: Keep copies of your pet’s vaccination records with your other important documents in a waterproof, fireproof safe.

The Challenge: Because you may not have access to your veterinarian or pharmacist, your pet may run out of prescription and preventative meds, like heartworm and flea and tick treatments.

The Solution: Pre-pack a bag with at least 14 days’ worth of all medications, along with the dosing schedule.Tip: Even if your pet isn’t due for an application yet, apply preventative medication before entering the evacuation facility because of close quarters and potential exposure from other animals.

The Challenge: Pet food and water may be scarce for days or even weeks in some case.

The Solution: Pre-pack your pet’s meals into separate storage containers to ensure that you have enough to last throughout the evacuation. It is also essential to pack water, as shelters may not have an adequate supply. Veterinarians recommend bringing 24 ounces per day for 20-pound dogs and 8 ounces per day for 10-pound cats.Tip: Don’t forget to pack serving bowls!

The Challenge: Some dogs slip out of their collars when they’re anxious.

The Solution: Travel with at least two leashes, including at least one slip leash which can securely hold your pet. Tip: Slip leashes also work on cats!
