Pastor Larry Writes… The spell checker in my word
processing program doesn’t recognize the word “missional”. It prompts me to check
the word to see if I have spelled it
correctly, and when asked, tells me that I quite possibly meant something else when
I typed it. It suggests “fissional”, which has to do with nuclear power, and
“visional” which means…something to do with vision.
We are called to be missional, both as a church and as followers (disciples) of
Jesus. This means reclaiming our status
as a people who are sent by Jesus into the world to teach others about him. It means
we are called to rethink our identity. Or to put it another way: “the church does not
have a mission; the mission has a church.”
I think missional has to be fissional
and visional. It has to do with us being Christ’s broken body in the world,
redeemed and reconciling. And it has to
do with showing the world what God’s ultimate desire for humanity really is: a
beloved community, bound by Christ’s love, diverse and radically formed by
grace.
Missional means being outwardly
focused, instead of inwardly. It means evaluating everything we do from the
standpoint of those we have not reached
for Jesus…yet. Missional means taking seriously Jesus’ command to “Go”, and
finding ways as individuals and as a church for being the sent out, spirit-equipped,
gracious and loving people of God we are.
Be a good neighbor. Welcome
strangers. Don’t apologize for being a follower of Jesus, but err on the side of
grace. Help others, pray for enemies. Let
your yes be yes and your no be no. Show up. Make and keep promises. Be a
peacemonger. Forgive. Feed. Build.
Peace,
Pastor Larry
A Farewell from Leslie Zeek
It has been my
greatest pleasure to
serve the congregation,
families, and most especially the
children of Mt. Sylvan during the past
year. If anyone had told me last summer I would already be
leaving this wonderful church family, I would have thought them just a little
crazy. However, the Lord has perfect timing; perhaps not according to our
viewpoint, but always perfect nonetheless.
A dear mentor told me recently as I struggled with this decision that the Lord
has a season for everything. Sometimes our seasons are very long; sometimes they
are very short. My season with Mt. Sylvan has ended much sooner than any of us
ever anticipated or wished for, but I go believing in the wonderful things the Lord
has for both myself and your congregation. I go knowing in my heart I
am following the path the Lord has set
before me, and I go believing the Lord has someone to follow me who will do
incredible things for the Children's Ministry. I will continue to pray for those
in leadership who make such decisions, as I have for many weeks now.
I will hold you all in my heart in a place where none of you will be
forgotten. I have made friends at Mt.
Sylvan, and many of you are like family, and I am comforted in the knowledge that
you are still only a three minute drive from my home. I have learned so much from
my time here, and I will carry these lessons with me as I continue to pursue
the calling the Lord has placed on my life. No matter where I go, whether close
by or far away, Mt. Sylvan will forever be a part of me. I love you all!
God Bless,
Leslie Zeek

Women’s Fitness Class!
"I've been meaning to find a class!" "I know I should be exercising!" "I'm not
sure I can keep up." - If you'd had any of these sentiments, now is a good time.
Every Thursday at 9:00 am in Mt. Sylvan’s Fellowship Hall move at your own
pace to fun music, do easy line dancing, tone up those arms and shoulders, stretch
and breathe, and care for that temple that God gave each of us. (Cor. 6:19) If you
can walk, you can do this!
This class is free! Participants are
encouraged to bring their own water bottle, towel, and light hand weights. Join
us, and bring a friend! For more information, contact Mary Beth Cecil at
919.730.2841.
Another Women’s Fitness Class!
Sara Neal, certified personal trainer and weight management consultant, is leading
a fitness class in the Mt. Sylvan’s Fellowship Hall. This class will be a perfect
complement to Mt. Sylvan’s Thursday Morning Class (described above). It will
focus on building strength, balance, and flexibility. Participants are encouraged to
bring resistance bands, a full-size towel
and water bottle. This free class is held Mondays at 10:00 am.

Discover Your Spiritual Gifts
As the Lay Leadership Committee begins the work of nominating leaders for the
various ministries of our church for 2017, we encourage members of our church to
discover their spiritual gifts. God has blessed our congregation with the various
gifts needed as we live and worship in community. Agreeing to do a “job” because
a position needs to be filled is not life-giving to you, but serving in the way that
God has gifted you to serve will enrich your life and the life of our church. During the
Sunday School hour during the month of September, I will be facilitating a class on
the Spiritual Gifts which will include a
spiritual gifts inventory to help you discover your gifts. The class will repeat
each week, so you need attend only one Sunday.
Knowing these gifts will help the Lay
Leadership Committee and you as we engage in a time of discernment together
about how you will serve Mt. Sylvan in the coming year. For more information, contact
me.

Project AGAPE
Project AGAPE, is a gift giving ministry ministry to some of our most desperate

gift boxes is a great way for families to get their children involved in a valuable
ministry. To participate in this follow the directions below.

boxes with lids. Please do not use a cardboard shoe box. The plastic boxes with
lids will be useful in other ways to the children and their families.
2. Feel free to include in your box a note of
greeting and encouragement. You may
want to include a picture of yourself or a group in your church. Also, if you want to
correspond with the child who receives your box, please include your postal
address.
3. Please enclose $5 for transportation costs for each box. Write checks to “Mt.
Sylvan UMC” and mark “AGAPE-Christmas Boxes,” on the memo line. Checks may be
included in the box.
4. Boxes should be delivered to Mt. Sylvan UMC by September 18.
5. Please choose the age level and sex of
the child for whom you want to prepare a

FOOD of the Month - SEPTEMBER – CANNED FRUIT. Please bring a can of fruit every Sunday to Church this month to support the Backpack
Ministry. With 1 in 4 children in Durham County facing food insecurity, every
donation helps. We are asking for canned peaches, pears, applesauce, and fruit
cocktail. We typically use + 240 cans of canned fruit every week. The cheapest
canned fruit is the Harris Teeter PAMPA brand at $.87 per can. Mt Sylvan actively
supports Eno Valley Elementary, Carrington, and Lucas Middle School with
its backpack program serving +120
children each week during the school year.
Communities In Schools of Durham is looking for a lead facilitator to teach the
'Incredible Years Teacher Program' (IY Teacher) as well as someone to evaluate
the teachers going thru the program in classroom management. These are part
time temporary roles and the classes are typically run in the fall. If you are
interested in finding out more information please contact the CIS Site Coordinator at
Eno Valley Elementary School, Crystal Avent at [email protected].
Snack Support for Teachers
Mt. Sylvan is blessed to continue our partnerships with Eno Valley Elementary
School, Northern High School and Carrington and Lucas Middle Schools for
the 2016-2017 school year. One of the ways we have showed support for Eno
Valley is by providing a monthly snack for the staff and teachers. We have heard
from the teachers that this gives them the boost, and it lasts for more than just one
day, they need as they teach and care for the children at Eno Valley. The children in
their classrooms are given a lot of love and support along with their daily lessons. If
you, your Sunday School class, small
group, or circle can help provide support for the staff at Eno Valley, please contact
Katy MacDonald at 667-4890, to be put on the schedule.
Backpack Program Update
It will soon be time to start making schedules and packing weekend food bags
for the 2016-2017 school year. If you are not on the schedule already and would like
to join us and be on the schedule for
packing bags and/or delivering them to Eno and Carrington, contact Katy
MacDonald at 667-4890.
Mt. Sylvan UMC Golf Tournament
The annual golf tournament will be Saturday, October 29,
2016. Players and hole sponsors are needed. Cost to enter the tournament is
$40 per player. Sponsors are encouraged to make a donation of $40 or more.
Tournament proceeds will be donated to furnish a room at Families Moving Forward.
The tournament will be open to church members, their family and friends. Watch

HURRICANES, PART 2 Hurricane is 18 - 36 Hours from Arriving
STEPS TO TAKE: Bookmark your city or county website for
quick access to storm updates and emergency instructions.
Bring loose, lightweight objects inside that could become projectiles in high winds (e.g.
patio furniture, garbage cans); anchor objects that would be unsafe to bring inside
(e.g. propane tanks); trim and remove trees close enough to fall on the building.
Cover all of your home’s windows.
Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is
to board up windows with 5/8” exterior grade or marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install.
Hurricane is 6 -18 Hours from Arriving
STEPS TO TAKE: Turn on your TV/radio, or check your city/
county website every 30 minutes in order to get the latest weather updates and
emergency instructions.
Charge your cell phone and other portable communications devices now so you will
have a full battery in case you lose power.
Hurricane is 6 Hours from Arriving
STEPS TO TAKE: If you’re not in an area that is
recommended for evacuation, plan to stay at home or where you are and let friends and family know where you are.
Close storm shutters, and stay away from
windows. Flying glass from broken windows could injure you.
Turn your refrigerator and/or freezer to the
coldest setting and open only when necessary. If you lose power, food will last
longer. Fill your refrigerator and freezer; even water bottles will work to maximize
cooling when power goes out. Use a thermometer in the refrigerator to be able
to check food temperature when the power is restored.
Turn on your TV/radio; check your city/
county website every 30 minutes in order to get the latest weather updates and
emergency instructions.
After a Hurricane
STEPS TO TAKE: Count your blessings and pray for
the survivors of the disaster.
Listen to local officials for updates and instructions.
Check-in with family and friends by texting or using social media.
Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.
Watch out for debris and downed power lines. Always look in front, above and
behind you when walking in a disaster area
Don’t Walk or Drive Through Flood Water Just 6 inches of moving water (about shoelace
height) is enough to knock you down, and fast moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
Remember – TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN. Drowning is the largest cause of
death in hurricanes.
Avoid flood water as it may be electrically charged from underground or downed power
lines and may hide dangerous debris or places where the ground is washed away.
Photograph the damage to your property in
order to assist in filing an insurance or FEMA claim.
Do what you can to prevent further damage to your property (e.g. putting a tarp on a
damaged roof) as insurance may not cover additional damage that occurs after a storm.
No Hurricane? Make a Hurricane Plan Know your hurricane risk factor. Find at (http://community.fema.gov/hazard/
hurricane/be-smart). Make an emergency plan. Build or restock your basic disaster
supplies kit including food and water, flashlight, batteries, chargers, cash, and first
aid supplies. Consider buying flood insurance Familiarize yourself with local emergency
plans. Know where to go and hot to get there should you need to get to higher ground or to
evacuate.
Mt. Sylvan Disaster Response Committee

Mt. Sylvan Disaster Response Committee Louisiana Flooding & United Methodist
Response Many of you are interested in responding
to the recent catastrophic flooding in Louisiana. Below is an email from the
United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR), on how to best help now:
Thank you for reaching out to UMCOR for
information on ways to support UMCOR relief efforts in LA, and for helping to
message that a cash donation to UMCOR is
the most flexible and efficient mechanism for supporting the response and recovery
ministries there and elsewhere (UMCOR Advance Special #901670). The link for
cash donations is http://www.umcor.org/ umcor/resources/news-stories/2016/
august/lafloods
The Louisiana State VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) has
stated that unsolicited donations of material goods have overwhelmed their
capacity at present; however, clean up kits
(“flood buckets”) are urgently needed. Flood buckets or cash can be brought to
the Church Office, please mark all checks as “Flood Relief – LA” . Buckets cost about
$55 to assemble. Kit information is found at: https://www.umcor.org/ UMCOR/Relief-
Supplies/Relief-Supply-Kits/Cleaning.
In time, the Louisiana Conference will be ready to receive volunteers to help with
construction projects, and may soon relay
specific material needs (no clothing please). You can check in with their
recovery ministries by way of their websites.
Please relay to your congregants our
deepest appreciation for their care, concern and prayers for our neighbors in
these states and elsewhere. It is gratifying to know that we are truly connected in
mission!
