Huizhou Ancient City 徽州古城

Huizhou ('Hui' in short), a historical region on the boundary between today's Anhui and Jiangxi

Provinces, consists of six counties - Shexian, Yixian, Xiuning, Qimen, Jixi and Wuyuan. Huizhou

Ancient City is the core scenic area of Shexian County in Huangshan and features a distinctive local

culture. It is also the birthplace of the Huizhou merchants, a famous business group in China that

flourished in the late Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). It is one of China's four well-preserved old cities,

together with Lijiang Old Town (in Yunnan Province), Ancient City of Pingyao (in Shanxi Province), and

Langzhong Ancient City (in Sichuan Province).

徽州簡稱「徽」，是今天安徽和江西省邊界的歷史區域，由歙縣、黟縣、休寧、祁門、績溪、婺源六縣組成。徽州古城是黃山市歙縣的核心景區，具有獨特的當地文化。也是徽商的發祥地，這是明末（1368 - 1644年）中國著名的商業集團在此蓬勃發展。連同雲南麗江古城，山西平遙古城，四川閬中古城，是中國四大保存完好的老城區之一。

This region is famous for its unique architectural style and Three Carvings since the old days. The

Huizhou-style building is one of the most important architectural schools in China, using bricks, wood,

and stones as the raw materials. Buildings were always adorned with elegant patterns. In the old town,

edifices were neatly built along the ancient flagstone alleys.

這個地區自古以來就以其獨特的建築風格和三雕而聞名。徽州式建築是中國最重要的建築學派之一，以磚，木，石為原料。建築常常裝飾著優雅圖案。整齊建築沿著老城區建在古老石板小巷中。

客廳坐檯的左面擺放一面鏡子，右面則擺放了一個瓶子，寓意“東瓶西鏡”，“東瓶”是保佑這家的男主人出門經商平平安安，“西鏡”寓意這家的女主人駐守閨閣“心靜如水。

Hui Garden – Showplace of Huizhou

Hui Garden is located in the center of Huizhou Ancient City. You can

enjoy various buildings with typical Huizhou style, It has a collection of

memorial arch, ancient dwelling houses and ancestral temple, which

called “Three Wonders of Huizhou”. The carvings are amazingly fine,

which inherited the essence of primitive Huizhou style carving arts.

Xu Guo Stone ArchwayXu Guo Stone Archway, in the center of the

ancient town, was built in 1584 in honor of the

local celebrity Xu Guo (1527 – 1596), a senior

official in the Ming Dynasty.

The eight-column archway is 11.4 meters in

height, 11.56 meters in length, and 6.77 meters

in width. It was made of large pieces of hard

blue stone. Each stone weighs about five tons.

There are carvings of dragons and beasts

strutting on the top, and phoenixes and other

rare birds flying between the stone beams in

pairs.

許國石牌坊許國石牌坊位於古城中心，於 1584 年為當地名流明代高官許國 (1527 - 1596年) 而建造。

八柱牌坊高 11.4 米，長 11.56 米，寬 6.77 米。是由大塊硬藍石製成。每塊石頭重約五噸。上面有龍和野獸雕刻物，鳳凰和罕見的鳥類成對地在石樑之間飛行。

Huizhou Prefecture OfficeHuizhou Prefecture Office, occupying an area

of 9,8 square km, is symbol of Huizhou Ancient

City. As the administration of She County in

Feudal China, it still keeps its origin layout.

The complex is symmetrical along the central

axis, following the typical architectural style of

ancient prefecture offices in old China. Five

main buildings on the axis are Nanqiao Tower,

Etiquette Door, Law Court, Second Court, and

Magistrate Office.

徽州府衙徽州府衙佔地 9.8 平方公里，是徽州古城的象徵。作為中國封建時代歙縣的行政管理部門，仍然保持著其原有佈局。

沿中軸線對稱，沿襲中國古代典型府衙建築風格。軸線上的五座主要建築物是南譙樓、儀門、公堂、二堂、知府廨組群。

Yuliang District – Origin of the Huizhou Merchants

Yuliang District in fact is an ancient village adjunct to Huizhou town south east corner. It

played an important role in the hundreds of years of prosperity of this famous local

business group. The port there was the only access to the outside world. There is an

old dam by the river, measuring 138 meters in length. The bottom is 27 meters wide

while the top is 4 meters in width. The old cobblestone-paved Yuliang street winds

about 1,000 meters and features old-fashioned shops and houses on both sides.

漁梁區 - 徽州商人的起源漁梁區實際上是徽州城東南角的一個古村落。它對於當地著名商業集團數百年的繁榮，發揮了重要作用。這裡的水道港口是進入外界的唯一通道。河上有一座老壩，長度為138 米。底寬27 米，而頂部寬度為 4 米。鵝卵石鋪成的漁梁老街大約有 1,000 米，兩旁是老式商店和房屋。

Dunben Hall 敦本堂There is a round table in the middle of the hall that can be separated. If the round tables are

separately leaning against of the hall walls, indicating that the male owner is doing business

outside the home, only the owner returns home and the round table will be brought together.

Yuliang Dam is comparable with Dujiangyan Irrigation System on

design, construction and function. In ancient times, the merchants

start from this wharf and turn to Huangzhou to do business.
