Painting is a very logical process.  You’ll work with avery limited palette - just 3 colors, and learn color mixing to createevery color you will ever need for a wonderful painting. Howard will go over all supplies, brushes, paints, your palette, andthe different types of canvasses. Also covered will be design anddrawing, simple perspective, value and tone, never straying from thefocus of your original idea, creating a mood, the calligraphy of paint-ing, keeping clean color, brush handling, hard and soft edges andmuch more. Learn how to critique your own work. Learn to see yourpotential painting in your camera. This painting process is not hard. One logical, accurate, step at a time is all that you will need tobecome a successful painter.

This is an intensive workshop covering step-by-step fundamentaltechniques for painting landscapes and cityscapes with oils and pastels. Alan will cover the basics of sound representational painting. He will discuss the challenges of working from photos and paintingon location. He demos how he creates bold pastel paintings with amulti-layered technique on pumice and sanded papers. Oil demoswill cover both brush and palette knife painting. There will be a special emphasis on ways to improve drawing and compositionalskills and on methods of completing paintings within limited time. Inaddition to daily demos, students can expect individual attention withinformal critiques throughout each day. Classes will be conducted inthe studio and on location (weather permitting) in the beautiful countryside and villages nearby.Alan Flattmann, a PSA Master Pastelist, was inducted in the PastelSociety of American Hall of Fame in 2006.Additional $50 tuition for this workshop.

This workshop recreates the techniques and ideas of 200 years ofart history, from past to the present. We begin by time traveling withyour instructor back to the genesis of the Hudson River painters inthe early 1800s. Visit the vistas and intimate settings which inspiredthem. We set our easels where they set theirs. David shows you howthey captured nature in their oil and watercolor sketches and howthey prepared their finished works, and explains how they thoughtabout making paintings. As the week progresses we will movethrough art history from techniques and locations of the HudsonRiver Painters to the later Luminists as they were inspired by the lateworks of Turner, then Tonalists like Corot, and then theImpressionists like John Singer Sargent. David demos their tech-niques in front of their landscape motifs using their tools andpalettes. The week concludes with expressionist landscape tech-niques of the early 20th century, with artists like George Bellows. Finally, we journey into the 21st century with new tools, new sur-faces, new palettes, new pigments and new criteria.

Learn how to fill your paintings with light and energy while usingphotography for reference. Peter shows you how to interpret light, control color, key your paintings, and create solid value structures sothat you can achieve the specific feeling or mood that you are after.Learn to redesign the elements of the photo to create a more dynam-ic and compelling painting. Plenty of demos, painting exercises, cri-tiques and discussion of materials, techniques, and common prob-lems are all a part of this workshop. Class will be held mostly indoorsand students should bring 5 - 10 landscapes photographs to workfrom. Also, bring a digital camera because you’ll spend some timeoutside photographing and learning how to make solid reference.Peter Fiore has been painting and exhibiting his work for almost 30

John MacDonald has made a lifelong study of the landscape: itsmany moods, colors and tones, and varied forms. This class takesstudents through the entire process of painting: from building aneffective composition to working tonality and color and to finishingwith sensitively chosen details. Following a traditional 19th centurypainting process focusing on the landscape, students hone theirobservational skills while coming to a clearer understanding of how asuccessful painting is structured. An emphasis is placed on properseeing -- looking closely at the existing color and tonal relationships -- and on understanding and manipulating what is seen. You will workwith the basic elements of painting, seeing them anew and in waysthat can improve the craft of your painting. Through daily demos andindividual critiques and instruction, you are encouraged to assimilatewhat is learned in class with your existing techniques and artisticvision. The class works both in the studio using photos as reference, and weather permitting, en plein air.

Skip Lawrence is more convinced than ever that what keeps us frommaking our best art, having the most fun, being the most proud of ourwork, is that we are trying to make a good painting while what weshould be doing is just making a painting. Making a painting withouttraditional judgments, rules, & the need for acceptance. History showsus that the great artist are never the followers & always the leaders, those that don’t give a damn about joining the clubs of conformists. For years he has instructed in a traditional workshop format. For

many of his workshops this is appropriate and the best way of sharingideas and techniques and hopefully moving people along to a betterplace with their art. Most of you are well beyond this group instruc-tion. Skip will conduct the workshop as a masters class. This meansyou will have more one on one conversations about your ideas andthe techniques you are going to use to express them. Ideas define thegoal while techniques deliver the goods. Additional $35 tuition for this workshop.

Joseph Bohler show you how to add passion in the process of paint-ing landscapes, buildings, and figures in watercolor. Daily demos arein the morning and daily critiques at the end of the day. Joseph also covers dry brush andwet-into-wet, using black, using red with greens, perspective, 3” fig-ures for landscapes and more. Individual attention is stressed. Theclass is mostly indoors, but if weather permits, outside a day or two.Joseph Bohler has been painting fine art for over thirty years. In June1991, he was elected by his peers to membership in the NationalAcademy of Western Art (NAWA) and won the Donald TeaqueMemorila Award for 2013.
