In MemoriamThe JCC family has lost two sisgnificant members this past month. Both Susan Fuchs and Sol Rubenstein have had major impacts on our members’ lives in very different ways.

Susan FuchsIt is with a full heartthat I speak of the pass-ing of Susan Fuchs. Shebegan her career withthe JCC in 1986 andwas chosen to take onthe task of opening anew program at thecenter, our infant day-care. She relieved theanxiety of many par-ents as they left theirprecious baby in hertrusted hands. Shetouched the lives of so

many children, and mentored so many young people, and made everyone feel like they were the most impor-tant person in the world. Susan reminded us to liveevery day of our life to the fullest with great strengthas she fought the cancer that eventually took her life. Her heart was filled with love for her family, her friends, and her favorite pastimes- knitting, shopping and theCheesecake Factory. Susan retired in June of 2007.

Sol RubensteinFormer JCC president of the JCC Board of Directors SolRubenstein passed away in April in Florida where helived for the past ten years. Mr. Rubenstein was presi-dent of the JCC from 1954 -1956. Joseph Harris, formerexecutive director of the JCC, remembers Sol as ex-tremely competent with some very special attributes.“His demeanor was one of leadership and geniality. TheRubensteins were also very philanthropic but not in anostentatious way,” he recollects.Sol and his wife Beatrice were long time members of

the JCC with a particular interest in the JCC nurseryschool. In 1989, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with the do-nation of a playful hand painted mural of dinosaurs on the staircase of the nurs-ery at the JCC’s Tompkinsville building. “The nursery school is close to us; all eight of our grandchildren have been in

it at some point,” Mr. Rubenstein told the S.I. Advance for an article on themural’s unveiling. “We thought it was a great idea. The mural is something thatwill add to the decor of the nursery school. It makes the place come to life.” The JCC extends condolences to the Rubenstein family on their loss. To make a donation in memory of Sol Rubenstein, please contact Suzanne

Lutz, Director of Individual Giving, at 718.475.5256 or [email protected]. Or youcan donate directly from the JCC homepage, sijcc.org, by clicking the link on thelower left side – Every $ Counts, Please Donate to the JCC.

30th Annual Golf and Tennis ClassicIt all began 30 years ago! Dr. Ron Leventhal (a past JCC President) and Helene Leventhal (a Women’s DivisionPast President) assembled a small group of volunteers in their dining room to learn from another organization howto go about running a charity golf outing. The rest is JCC history! This year the history continues on Monday, July26 at the Richmond County Country Club.Over the course of these past 30 years the Jewish Community Center of Staten Island has given more than

$1,000,000 in Camp and Nursery School scholarships to children of deserving families who otherwise would not beable to provide them with the enriching experience of JCC programs.Robin Lefkowitz and Alan Poritz, long-time co-chairs of this event and their committee, are making every effort

to make this year’s Outing the best ever. Participants will play, eat, drink and be merry. In addition to golf coursecontests such as longest drive and closest to the pin, Bay Ridge Lexus is providing the Hole-in-One contest car to the lucky golfer. Last year, we brought back tennis and expect to build on that success. Robin and Alan have enlisted the help of Dr. Josh Kanner is chair-

ing the Tennis Committee. This group is enthusiastically promoting the event, and planning a round robin format open to players of all lev-els. Area tennis professionals are being invited to show their support as well.To help make this 30th anniversary year special, we are proud to honor individuals and an organization who have worked tirelessly on

behalf of the JCC and the Staten Island community. Robin Lefkowitz, our event co-chair, will receive the JCC Distinguished Service Award, the SIEDC (Staten Island Economic Development Corporation) will receive the JCC Community Service Award, and Borough PresidentJames P. Molinaro will receive the JCC Pride of Staten Island Award. There are a number of ways we raise the funds that allow us to provide scholarships. Sponsorship opportunities are available which can

be a means of marketing your business or supporting an honoree. Or you can attend the event as a golfer, tennis player or dinner guest,or provide a gift which can be used as a live or silent auction item or a raffle prize. All of these are ways to help us meet our goal of help-ing the children of Staten Island. If you are interested in attending or participating in the other opportunities to lend your support, contact Sylvia Cohen at 718.475.5246

or [email protected].

Camp Scholarship FundThe temperature is rising, the flowers are blooming, and children are gazing longingly outside their classroom windows daydreaming. What arethey daydreaming about? Why, JCC summer camp, of course! The JCC Lillian Schwartz Day Camp has been in existence for 75 years, creating warm and wonderful memories for Staten Island’s youth. Our

children need summer day camp now more than ever. Today most families have either a single working parent, two working adults, or in somecases one or both searching for employment. During the summer season, these parents need a safe and secure environment in which to leavetheir children while at their jobs or looking for employment and this is where the JCC is so helpful. Our camp is known as the place parents canleave their children and not worry about them because they know that they are having a fun and exciting time making new memories and friendsthat will last a lifetime.Given the past year’s economy, we know that not all families can afford summer day camp, but they also cannot afford to not send their

children to camp. This is where the JCC’s camp scholarship fund comes in. Each year we provide over $300,000 to families who would nototherwise be able to afford the cost of camp. Please consider making a gift to this year’s scholarship fund by using the coupon below or by goingto our website, www.sijcc.org and making a secure, online donation. You can also establish a named scholarship fund in honor or memory of aloved one. Please contact Suzanne Lutz, Director of Individual Giving, at 718.475.5256 or via e-mail at [email protected] for more informationor assistance.Another opportunity to donate to our camp scholarship program is to participate in the 30th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic for the benefit of

the Isador Aberlin-Ed Rovner Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Richmond County Country Club on July 26, 2010. All proceeds from the eventare allocated to camp scholarships. For further information please visit our website at www.sijcc.org or contact Sylvia Cohen, Special EventsCoordinator, at 718.475.5246 or via e-mail at [email protected] matter how you choose to participate, please know that all donations are welcome and appreciated. Without your continued support we

would not be able to continue providing much needed scholarships to Staten Island’s children.

Volunteer of Excellence Award Presented to Susan PerelMazel Tov to JCC Volunteer extraordinaire SusanPerel! Susan was recently presented with the Vol-unteer of Excellence award from UJA Federation.Susan has done so much to make the Jewish

Community Center of Staten Island a place wherechildren and people with developmental disabilitiesfeel at home.Three years ago a Special Needs Task Force was

convened and was given the charge of envisioninga special needs department at the JCC. Susan was one of a select few com-munity members who were chosen to serve on this Task Force. Today, thanks to the Task Force’s efforts the JCC now offers an after-school pro-gram and holiday trips for children with special needs, a “Buddy” program inwhich teens with special needs are paired with other teens, and Reelabili-ties, an annual film festival in which issues of disability are explored. Similarly, Susan in her role as Camp Committee chairperson has been in-

fluential in revitalizing our camp committee and infusing energy into our daycamp program. Under her leadership, the camp has grown in size by about40%, and the quality of the program has improved dramatically, as well. Ac-complishments that coincide with Susan’s appointment as chairperson in-clude incorporating a camp parent visiting day and a camp clean-up day intothe camp calendar, integrating an orthodox camp program into the paletteof JCC summer camp programs, and expanding our camp staff training pro-gram.Additionally, Susan is a member of the JCC Board of Directors. She sits on

its executive board and serves as the agency’s treasurer. It’s because of volunteers like Susan, who invest so much time and dedi-

cation to our agency and our community, that programs and services thrive.Thank you Susan for your hard work and dedication and for making the JCCa place where children and people with special needs feel at home.

JCC Preschoolers Adopt a SoldierThis year, our Preschool children participated in the Adopt a Soldier programthrough the JCCA. The Jewish men and women serving our country were de-lighted to hear from our children! At the Avis/South Shore, Miss Erica and MissVicky’s class made a book for their soldier called “Because of You, I Can…”which celebrates everything our armed forces do for our country. Each childmade a page, then sent the book to their adopted soldier in Iraq.Miss Olivia and Miss Maggie’s class at the Bernikow used hand prints, among

other things, to make a 2 sided flag to send to their soldier – one side for Amer-ica, the other side for Israel. Miss Allison and Miss Bushra were fortunate enough to have Riley Seagriff’s

father, Ian, a sol-dier in the U.S.Army, visit theirclassroom at theNorth Shore. He spoke to the students about the various ways in which the sol-diers help people in places such as Afghanistan. We learned that the soldiersprovide toys and other supplies to the children and adults using items from carepackages they received. He also showed the group some pictures of the chil-dren in Afghanistan receiving toys and dolls from the soldiers. We are collecting items for our Preschool’s adopted soldiers. They include:• Baby wipes • Hand sanitizer• Liquid soap • Coloring books, crayons, paper, pencils• White socks • Small toys or stuffed animals• Hard candy or gum- no chocolateIf you would like to contribute, please give items to the Early Childhood office
