ML Baseball NHL NBA College baseball Prep soccer Prep tennis Prep baseball Prep track Area schedule TV Sports Season ends for Indians Staff report Catawba’s baseball season ended with a 3-2 loss to top-seeded Francis Marion in the Southeast Regional. Catawba (40-13), the home team for Friday’s early game, had the tying run at third with one out in the bot- tom of the ninth but failed to score. Nick Lomascolo (7-3) pitched sev- en shutout innings for the Indians, but top-seeded Francis Marion scored three runs with two out in the eighth. Wil Huneycutt relieved Lomasco- lo with one run in and two men on but couldn’t shut the door. Francis Mar- ion (39-13) had three straight singles, two that stayed in the infield, to take the lead. Catawba took a 1-0 lead when SAC Freshman of the Year Garrett Furr led off the second with his 11th homer. Catawba made it 2-0 in the fourth after Ryan Bostian hit a groundball to third base and raced all the way to third when the ball was thrown away down the right-field line. Craige Ly- erly, who finished his career with a streak of reaching base in 88 consecutive games, singled home Bostian. It was all Lomas- colo after that, and the freshman south- paw made the lead stand up through seven. He struck out four and walked one. Catawba tried to come back in the ninth. Lyerly singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch, but he had to stop at third on Furr’s sin- gle to right-center. John Neese fanned for the second out, and Brett Hatley flied out to end the game. Catawba managed only four hits, with Furr and Lyerly getting two apiece. Francis Marion advanced to play in today’s 3 p.m. game. Hornet tennis goes down From staff reports Salisbury’s Steven Page and the doubles team of Austin Flynn-Alan Lebowitz won one match apiece be- fore being eliminated from the 2A tennis championships Friday in Cary. The previously unbeaten Page won 6-1, 6-0 against Tarboro’s Armando Gonzalez but fell 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 to Cedar Ridge’s Jerry Newburg, who was the Mideast Regional runner-up. Page (25-1) took the first set in less than 20 minutes, and Newburg made the adjustments necessary to alter the course of the match. “(Newburg) did a 180-degree turn- around,” Salisbury coach Chris Myers said. “He went from playing two- and three-shot rallies to settling down and playing a technically sound second and third set. Endurance was a factor for both players and, in the end, (Newburg) just didn’t make mistakes.” Flynn-Lebowitz (19-4) reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 7-6 victory against Croatan’s Andrew Burchins- Kevin Cunningham and then lost 6-1, 6-1 against Newton-Conover’s Ryan Lampe-Dillon Cervantez. Salisbury’s Seth Gentry-Alex Weant (13-4) faced Greene Central’s Eric Simmons-Colby Chase, the East Regional champions, in the first round and dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision. The Hornets’ season isn’t over. They play host to Shelby on Tuesday in the dual-team quarterfinals. Playoff baseball Wild card North Rowan was elim- inated from the 1A playoffs by a 10- 5 loss to Cherryville, a No. 1 seed, on Friday. The Cavaliers (10-15) got a two-run homer from Dakota Brown in the first in- ning and put up a fight. “We were right there for five in- nings,” North coach Rob Linder said. “We played a good game, but Cherryville hit the ball.” It was 5-5 after North scored a run on an error in the top of the fifth, but the Ironmen answered with four dou- bles and four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Laurens pitched four innings and took the loss for North. Brown knocked in three runs. Wes- ley Barker had three hits, and Matt Mauldin had two. A.L. Brown lost to Charlotte Catholic 4-3 in the 3A playoffs despite a strong out- ing by John J. Tuttle, who pitched a com- plete game and held the Cougars to one run. The Wonders were hurt by four er- rors and they didn’t capitalize on a scoring opportunity in the seventh with the meat of the order up. Catholic’s win means it will play host to Carson in the second round. CPC No. 4 seed Davie beat Southwestern No. 1 seed Providence 7-6 on Friday as Zach Long pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to preserve the win. Davie (12-11) led 7-3 until a three-run homer by Providence (18-8) in the bottom of the sixth made it close. Davie starter Ryan Foster was lift- ed for Long, who picked up the save. Foster gave up just six hits but three were homers. Two of Provi- dence’s runs were unearned. Connor Bodenhamer hit a homer for Davie. Tyler Seaford had a two- run double. Carson Herndon’s two- run double led to four War Eagle runs in the top of the sixth to give coach Mike Herndon’s club a cushion. Tyler Lequire pitched a four-hit shutout and drove in four runs to lead East Davidson to an 8-0 2A victory against West Lincoln. 3A soccer playoffs West Rowan’s season came to a screeching halt Friday night as it lost in the second round to Jay M. Robin- son 3-2. West (17-3-2) took a 1-0 lead at half- time and led 2-0 early in the second half, but the Bulldogs (14-7-1) scored three unanswered goals.
