The Hobe Sound Chamber is no exception. Often described as live- ly, friendly, and active, the members genuinely walk their talk when it comes to Chamber members doing business with Chamber members, and encouraging their friends and associates to do the same. One reason for this enthusiasm is that new members attend an orientation workshop (lunch included) to learn about the “tools” of membership. If pictures are worth a thousand words, attendees get an eyeful with, well, real tools! With her huge and very real toolbox at her side, Director of Membership Services, Jan Otten, with tongue in cheek, introduces assorted tools that new members can use to “hammer” their message home and “measure (ruler)” their success. Jan’s tools demo must be working because Hobe Sound boasts the largest per capita business chamber in Martin County. “If the tools excite new Chamber members, maybe it will also excite new businesses and residents moving to Hobe Sound,” says Jan. “So this January the Ambassador Committee will initiate a new program coined ‘The Tool Box Project’.” According to Jan, the Chamber’s Ambassadors and Volunteers will distribute a cardboard version of Jan’s toolbox to businesses and residents new to Hobe Sound. Each “box” will be loaded with useful logo- imprinted tools like tape measurers, flashlights, and pic- ture hangers, plus coupons and special offers, all from participating Chamber members. The Tool Box Project offers 25 members at a time a new opportunity to be creative with their promotion- al messages. of radiation to patients during their surgery. By deliv-ering this radiation at the same time the cancerous tis-sue is removed, six weeks of post-operative radiationcan be reduced to one day of treatment in some cases.

“We understand how important our patients are notonly to their loved ones, but also to this community asa whole,” said John A.P. Rimmer, MD, MedicalDirector, Jupiter Medical Center’s Kristin Hoke BreastHealth Program. “Being able to get state-of-the-art careclose to home means that the women we treat get backto their healthy, productive lives much faster, withoutcompromising any quality whatsoever.”

There are many benefits of e-IORT for breast cancerpatients, such as compressed treatment time, reducedradiation exposure, and a faster return to a normalquality of life. IORT allows radiation and surgicaloncologists to see the exact area they need to radiateand immediately deliver a therapeutic dose to theaffected area, sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

“Not only does this reduce the time of radiationtreatment from six or seven weeks, it protects the bodyfrom unnecessary radiation to healthy tissue,” statedAnthony E. Addesa, MD, Medical Director ofRadiation Oncology at Jupiter Medical Center’s EllaMilbank Foshay Cancer Center. “In addition to theclear health benefits of this cutting-edge treatment, italso means no skin changes, no fibrosis, no scarring, and no hardening of the skin or other tissues. At theend of the day, it translates into excellent outcomes forour patients and our community as a whole.”

For some women, one dose will be all that’s needed. For others, this will cut the required course of radiationtreatment in half. Breast cancer patients who are cur-rently eligible for the one-day treatment protocol includewomen more than 60 years of age, with tumors less thantwo centimeters in size, are estrogen receptor positive, and their lymph nodes are negative for cancer spread.

The Comprehensive Breast Care Program at JupiterMedical Center was the first in Palm Beach and MartinCounties to receive the National AccreditationProgram for Breast Centers designation.

I’ve spent a good portion of the last several years shak-ing my head in disbelief at some of the network closetsfound in offices around the area. Nothing surprises meanymore, but I still have to shake my head when I see$20,000 (and usually more) in equipment in a networkfor an office of five people. It’s a common occurrence thatcomes largely from an existing relationship between thebusiness’s decision maker and a computer guy trying tomake a buck and secure a customer for life. Here’s arecent example…

Last week, I walked into a CPA’s office who called andasked if I could help them out with some issues. When Igot there I asked how many people worked in the office. The customer said there were three people includinghimself. He then gave me a quick tour of the office show-ing me the three desktop computers at the desks, one inthe conference room and we ended the tour at the smallroom/closet at the back of the office where his networkequipment and server live. When the door opened, thehead shaking started. His “buddy” who had a computerbusiness had two computers and a server in the closet. When I asked him what they were for, he handed me athree-ring binder with “all” of the information I shouldneed. As it turns out, one of the computers was brandnew. It was purchased as a replacement for an old com-puter that was used for one purpose and one purposealone–to play Pandora on the music system in the office!Another identical PC was sitting next to it and, appar-ently, that was a computer for the computer guy to usewhen he was working on the system. Then there was theserver. An eight-month-old Dell with all the bells andwhistles with a price tag of approximately $8,000.

Now that I had seen the system, I went on to ask whatissues I could help with.

“Well, I’d really like you to tell me what it would costto get everything back into working order. We don’t haveany email right now and we haven’t for several days.”

Their computer guy had been working on the issue (of

course at his regular hourly rate) and hadn’t shown up ina couple days. The customer was losing confidence in hisability to resolve the issue, but had nowhere else to goexcept to another company. My project plan for him wasto spend $150 a month to host his email and website else-where, eliminate the server completely and use his recep-tionist’s computer to play Pandora. Sometimes “fixing”means “throw it in the dumpster.”

In conclusion, when you are undergoing an IT projectin your office, take the time to make sure you understandwhat is being done, how it’s going to help your company,

and what other options there are. For some “computerguys,” today’s technology world can be very scary. Someof them feel like their grasping at straws and they will doanything to “lock in” a customer and that includes sellinga pile of really expensive junk that will turn your officeinto a technology labyrinth that only the “computer guy”understands (if you’re lucky). It’s much more expensive toundo a poorly executed project than it is to implement agood one. If you don’t understand what you’re hearingfrom your IT help, don’t move forward with the projectuntil you do!

Let’s face it being a sales professional is not a 9-5 job. When you begin your sales career whether it is in a newindustry or new company you need to be ready to putin your time. The good news is that once you havedeveloped a loyal customer base and referral partnerteam you will not have to work as many hours to reachyour goals. I know several very successful sales peoplethat work less than twenty five hours a week and makesix figure incomes. The first thing we need to establishis how we can get to that goal, develop a plan and stickto it. What I have found over my sales career is that it isvery easy to waste time. The time wasters in this articleare not in any particular order but you should always beaware of them.

Depending on what type of business you are in we allhave selling hours. A client of mine sells strictly to attor-neys, for the most part her selling/closing times are from8:30am-6pm. You have to be careful not to fill your cal-endar with too many non-selling action items duringyour selling/closing times.

1. Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, Google+, andLinkedIn the list can go on and on. Social media is amust for just about every business today; however I haveseen sales people get stuck on social media for severalhours a day. If you can’t hire someone to manage yoursocial media, make sure to utilize tools such as HootSuite and tweet deck. If you are using social media takea specific time not during selling/closing hours and putit on your calendar.

2. Networking – that is right I said it!! If you are notnetworking where your referral partners are or clientsare then you are wasting your time. Also, if you are notleaving every single event with a possible referral part-

ner meeting then youare wasting your timeand money.

3. Chasing theWrong Prospects –Know who you arelooking for. Identifywho your prospects areand list all of them. Iwould also recommendmaking a list of busi-ness/consumers that arenot good clients foryou. Sometimes we getwrapped in just getting any kind of sale is a good saleand sometimes this may be true however make sure youare not chasing the wrong prospects to help you reachyour goals.

4. Email – the technology we have at our fingertips isgreat, however it can be huge distraction. As a matter offact the only software that is open is this article and myphone is off. Pick a time to respond to emails every dayand your clients and prospects will know that.

Next month we will have more time wasters to avoid!Make sure that you make the most of your day byscheduling it properly.

Thank You Renewals:I have been training people just like you in the use of

pepper spray for over 20 years. During that time, I haveseen a vast amount of misinformation being provided byorganizations and other individuals. I would like toanswer some of the most common questions I have beenasked about a personal safety option that can be tracedback in history to as early as 300 B.C.

The first question often asked is, “What’s the differ-ence between mace and pepper spray?” For the sake ofbrevity and without being too technical, the simpleanswer is “mace” is an irritant and “pepper spray” is aninflammatory. Both rely on pain to achieve compliance.

The second most common question asked is, “I pur-chased ‘police strength’ pepper spray. What does thatmean?” To be painfully honest, not very much. Justbecause something says “police strength” does not meanit will necessarily be better than another product. Sayingit is “police strength” may simply be a marketing tool.

The third most common question asked is, “Whatdoes the percentage on the canister mean?” This is one ofthe best questions one can ask. The percentage helpsinform you about the product strength. For example, ifyou buy a product rated at 2 million SHU and the can-ister indicates it is a 10 percent solution, this means thecanister contains 10 percent of 2 million SHU. If I do

my math correctly, thatwould equate to200,000 SHU. Trustme, that is hot enoughwhen the pepper isderived from a qualitysource. SHU meansScoville Heat Units, but that is a topic foranother article.

Pepper spray is avery effective optionfor self-defense, butyou should knowabout the productsavailable to you before you make your decision to pur-chase a pepper spray unit. I highly recommend that youreceive training from a reputable individual or organiza-tion, so you will have confidence in your selected per-sonal safety device.
