The scope of duties may be highly diversified depending upon the needs of the department in which the incumbent works. Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities The Maintenance Technician I reports to any one of a number of supervisory classifications depending upon the structure of the specific department in which the position works. Typical Functions 1. Assists with corrective and preventive building maintenance, including basic plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and electrical. 2. Conducts field checks of buildings to identify and analyze corrective and preventive maintenance modifications. 3. Maintains and repairs recreation equipment such as weights, pools, treadmills, and ellipticals. 4. Maintains and repairs mechanical equipment, machinery, and vehicles. 5. May make repairs and monitor safety equipment such as the fire “Exit” signs and general repair of emergency doors. May perform periodic checks of fire & smoke alarms. 6. Maintains adequate inventory of custodial equipment, chemicals, paper products, and supplies. 1

Summary

Incumbents in the Maintenance Technician series maintain and repair equipment, machinery, appliances, utilities, buildings, facilities, fixtures, and systems, in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. The scope of duties may be highly diversified depending upon the needs of the department in which the incumbent works.

Typical Functions

1. Assists with corrective and preventive building maintenance, including basic plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and electrical.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to work with minimal supervision.2. Knowledge of general maintenance processes and methods.3. Knowledge of electricity, carpentry, plumbing, and other technical skills.4. Knowledge of cleaning solutions, chemicals, and solvents.

Minimum Qualifications

Aptitude plus experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting (up to 75 lbs.) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions, such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods.

Employees are exposed to hazardous conditions including, noise, vibrations from machinery, moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, elevated work spaces, such as scaffolding, and atmospheric conditions that can affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
