3ust went with 1. 'hy run one cable when its nearly as easy to run 1, right) ather than vary the number, I 3ust ran1 drops to each location to provide ma4imum fle4ibility with out the need for local (in*room switches. / locationswith 1 ports each, &+ ports total.

/. 'hat is a good location for distribution)

    * 5or me the logical location was my laundry room. 6y cable # already comes into this room and gets split toeach room. It is important to note that my internet comes into the house (over the cable here too so if I move mycable modem here, it will be able to supply internet access to the entire network. Another thing to consider is theamount of space needed to mount a shelf to hold the network e%uipment.

    1. 'hat path should the cables take)

    * #his is probably the most difficult consideration. 5or me, my condo is on the +nd (top floor and have access tomy attic. 6y cable # is distributed through the attic so it seemed like a good solution to run my home networkthrough there as well. 5or single floor homes with a basement, the basement may be the best path. 5or multi*storyhomes you may have to be creative. 7utside may be an option or through an old laundry chute. I will not addressthe specifics of all the possibilities, 3ust my own circumstances. #he other consideration with cable path is cablelength. #he ma4 cable length for up to gigabit speeds over copper 8#P cabling is &99 meters (:/99 feet . #hisshould provide plenty of fle4ibility for most home applications but it is good to be aware of this limit.

;. 'hat network speed do I need)

    * #his will mainly play a part in what kind of switch to get. &9mbps is still faster than most everyones home internetconnection, so if you are 3ust surfing a &9 megabit switch will suffice 3ust fine.

0ince I knew the path my cable # took and they were in all the same locations that I wanted my ethernet 3acks, I3ust located my cable # 3acks to start. 8sing the stud finder I was able to tell which side of the cable 3ack the studwas located on. 0tuds are located &2E apart in almost all homes and I knew I wanted my ethernet to go in the same

wall cavity as the cable # .

?ow that you$ve decided where to mount the bo4, you need to draw the lines on the wall to fit the new bo4 and cutthe hold with the pointed hand saw. #he pointed saw should be able to push through the dry wall pretty easilywithout the need to drill starter holes.

7nce you have the hole cut in the wall, you can put the single gang bo4 into the hole and screw the clamps withhold it in place by clamping to the back of the dry wall.

epeat this for each location that you want to run to.

5or now we$ll leave the wall plates off.

At this time you$ll also want to cut a hole in the wall in the distribution room. Here you want to cut a hole that theplastic grommet will fit into.

#here are a number of ways to do this, you can estimate, measure from floor plans, run one, etc. I used the run onemethod.

#o find the lengths re%uired for each run I ran one cable to each room from the distribution room, pulled it out, andmade / more like it. After that, you can run all 1 together.

I noted in the materials that a patch panel was optional. Aand #;2>- wiring standards. #o be honest I don$t know if either would work. I have seen EAE used for I0B? beforebut, in looking at the #;2>- color guide I recogni ed it as the same as the tons of patch cables I have made beforeso I went with it. 6ake sure you use the same on both ends.

?ow before you start connecting most of the network components you want to test all the connections and make

sure things are working. #his can be done a number of ways. If you actually have a network tester then youprobably know what you$re doing.

I plugged a short patch cable from my patch panel to each port on my switch and turned it on. 0ince it is a managedswitch I set each port to be Eup upE and Eauto negotiateE 8nmanaged switches will not need to configure anything.

#he ne4t step is to take another patch cable and a laptop and plug it into each port in each room. Check the switch

after each port and verify the ElinkE indicator is on. -eing able to establish a link tests the physical layer (i.e. nobroken wires, all tight crimps, no crossed wires , as well as the data link layer (i.e. negotiation between networkcard and switch port . ?o IP addressing or anything needed for testing.

#his is also a good time to make sure your labeling matches on both ends. 5or e4ample you can make sure thatE6aster -edroom Port +E on your patch panel actually goes to the second port in the master bedroom.

?ow that we$ve got this fancy network, we want to connect it to the internet right)

5irst the cable modem setup. 0ince I moved my cable modem from my second bedroom (office to the distributionroom I needed to change the way my cable was split. ather than the main cable into the house being split / ways Isplit things a little differently. I split the incoming cable with a /*way splitter first. & to the main # , & to the +*waysplitter for # in the bedrooms and the other into the cable modem. I connected the splitters using a male*malebarrel connector.

?ow that the cable modem is in the right place we can continue with our network setup. Bepending on your internetprovider some of this setup may vary. I$m going to discuss the specifics of my environment only. I$ll provide tipsfor others when possible.

5rom the cable modem ethernet port I plugged into the E8ntrustedE port on my router firewall. 5rom the E#rustedEport, I connected to the first switch port on my switch. If your switch has one, plug into the port labeled E8plinkEinstead. Bepending on the switch or cable modem and or router, you may need (or already have crossover cablesfor these connections. 'ith my router firewall set up as a BHCP server I can now provide each port access to theinternet. In addition my entire network is protected from outside access by the firewall.

Although it is not integral to this instructable, I also plugged a wireless access point into my switch so that I can

have wireless access as well. 0ince my wireless is both encrypted and has 6AC filtering I feel comfortable with iton the EtrustedE side of my firewall. If for some reason I wanted to provide open wireless access but still protect mynetwork I would need a different configuration of connections. I won$t go into detail about these changes but Iwanted to note them depending on what your network goals are and how they might incorporate wireless access.

In summary, my firewall receives my single, static IP from my I0P cable modem. It also acts as a router andprovides BHCP IP addresses to all other hosts on my private network via the switch and cabling we 3ust installed.

About your comment Ethat$s what firewalls are forE, you might want to brush up on your understanding aboutwhat firewalls do. 5irewalls do not protect wireless. 5irewalls are like a gate to your network * but if you usewireless the gate kinda doesn$t work because your traffic flies through the air.

J8@0#I7? * we are currently wiring Cat*2 and replacing Cat*/ into the rest of the updates we have done onour &G;/ home. Having no issues and coming along nicely. #he idea is to keep up with 5i70 we have had witheri on for several years. 7ur house needed the update and we want to be up to $speed$ for changes in cable #industry when we figure in a few years time, all one will need is an I0P for computer to replace set*top bo4es in

populated areas. ?et5li4 runs on our big # screen 3ust fine through the *-o4 on a nice big monitor.

'e figure that in short order, competitive I0P vendors will offer (ala Hulu will run the # and all the devicesthat are currently entering each home * like * iPad and wireless ways of watching anything that traditional# Cable once ruled. #he telephone is almost a hang*nail bundle now because it is digital and we haveconsumer choices outside cable company bundling. probably be dropped in bundle choices and 3ust be part of I0P services)

eri on has changed downwards to $digital$ phone bundle, and we like having a land line. 'ith 5i7s we en3oy ahighly effective 'i5i environment with the old wiring. I promised the CA#*2 will make it even better.

#H@ J8@0#I7? came up with my wife when she asked me * as I had said to her that the old CA#*/ defeatshigh speed price tiers after enters the old wiring in the house. I told her my readings indicated we were around&96bps once the service hit our house wiring regardless of how fancy the bo4 to the house and pay tier

promised. #hus the upgrade is timely now to CA#*2.

If all we were getting was the low speed high speed * 'H< were we paying for higher priced, +;6bps $faster$tier selections all this time)" In summery, if the house has old wiring, what good is it for a consumer to pay forthe highest speed 5i70 offers when the CA#*/ wiring does not allow it to do it$s thing)

'hen we are finished converting * CA#*2 should up our bang for less buck if we switch to lower tier pricing)'e have good speed and wireless and wired interaction with our computers and devices with the CA#*/.

0hould we change our package for the lower speed price selection from our I0P with the CA#*2, and not blinkin the $speed$ if we pick the #hanks ahead of time for helping weed out fact vs. fiction vs. wallet"Reply

+ 6ake sweeping turns, do not make sharp turns, which may damage the wire and reduce itRs capacity.

    / !eave service loops

1 'hen pulling the wire, remember that the wire being pulled can cause heat build up in spots, such as

at areas where holes were drilled in rafters and such, on a previously pulled wire. As such, donRt try to pull toomany wires through a single hole.

; 8se good wire stripers. ?icking the wire reduces its gauge si e at the nick, reducing its load capacityat that point, as well as weakening it and making it more susceptible to breakage.

2 Always loop clockwise on screws so that tightening the screw pulls the wire in, rather than pushing itout, such as a counter clockwise loop would do when tightening.

F Consider picking up some Sdeo4T type product from an electrical or electronic sales outlet. #his cancut down on o4idation, which would compromise the connection %uality, and to limit electrolysis, which woulddestroy the 3unction when dissimilar metals are 3oined.

#hough any wireless system is toast in a power outage (we e4perience ten to fourteen a year in the ?orthwet, where trees don$t have to root deep and wind takes them out, along with power lines , telephone companies

provide power to phone lines independent of electric utilities. As a result, phone lines are often operationalwhen there is no AC current to the house.

7f course, 8P0 are limited and must be recharged, if ta4ed for any significant time or by a significant load.egardless, they would do nothing for a phone line, since, as noted, the phone companies supply that power(aside from home e%uipment dependent on AC, such as message recorders, cordless phones and so forth .

=enerators solve problems of supplying power, but a whole house generator can cost as much as three or fourthousand a month to operate. @ven small generators can be e4pensive, such as if you had to run it full time to
