How to STUDY ABROAD in
Germany
Are you hoping to
study abroad in Germany?
Here’s 3 things you’ll
need to prepare for your
adventure!
1. A Visa
Students from within the EU, EEA or
Switzerland do not need a visa to
study in Germany. They simply need
to register at the nearest registry office
on arrival.
This also applies to students from a
number of other countries, including
Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New
Zealand, South Korea and the US.
This also applies to students from
Andorra, Brazil, El Salvador,
Honduras, Monaco and San Marino,
as long as they don’t intend to work
while studying in Germany.
Students applying from elsewhere will
need to apply for a visa before arrival.
This can be done through the nearest
German Embassy.
This process can take several months,
so apply well in advance!
2. Funding
At German public universities, there are
no tuition fees for undergraduate
programs or for the majority of
postgraduate courses.
The majority of students simply pay a
small ‘semester fee’, which is typically no
more than €300 per semester.
This covers contributions to the student
union, administration, and the cost of a
semester ticket – a six-month pass for
public transport.
3. The Language
Most courses are taught in German,
requiring international applicants to
submit proof of proficiency in the
language.
The TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache,
meaning “Test of German as a foreign
language”) Can be taken at centers in 90+
countries worldwide.
While German remains the main
language of instruction, a large and
growing number of English-taught
programs are available.
4. Your Application
Your application deadline will depend
on your chosen institution, but it’s
recommended that you apply six weeks
before the deadline, to allow for any
corrections or missing information.
Each institution will have their own
specific requirements, but generally you
will need:
1. A certified copy of your high-school
diploma or previous qualifications in
the original language.
2. A translated overview of your
courses, modules and grades.
3. A passport photo.
4. Proof of language proficiency.
