A split chain isn't really frivolous but since the technique will appear in

future Frivolous Frivolité items, this seemed like the best place to put it!

A Split Chain - SC - is used i tattig maily t "climb ut" r "bridge" frme rud i a mtif r dily t get t the ext rud ad ctiue withutcuttig ad reiig the threads. It is called a plit Chai because it is wredi tw parts. he first part is wred as a regular chai frm left t right adthe remaider is wred frm right t left. Ather techique used t climb utr bridge is by maig a plit Rig.

Fllwig is a small practice mtif which requires thread wud t twshuttles with the ctiuus methd.

First f all, thugh, here is a Hady Hit frmTEENY TATMOUSE the wgse little masct fr widig aapprximately equal amut f thread t each shuttle. Frm yur ballf thread, wide shuttle - cutig hw may turs it taes t put the amut f thread yu wat. D't cut yur thread. ay, fr example, this t 60 turs... wctiue widig the thread ver ad arud thewidest part f this shuttle fr apprximatelythree-quarters the umber f turs yu did withi theshuttle i this case it will be 45 turs. Cut the thread frm the ball. Nw wid yur secd shuttle frm the thread wud ver the first e.

Let's start the mtif with:

ROUND 1: Rig f 8 - 4 - 8 8 Duble titches, Pict, fur Duble titches,Pict, 8 Duble titches. Wr a ttal f five Rigs iig each Rig t the previus e, as idicated diagram directly abve, the iig the last t thefirst ad five Chais 8 - 8 betwee each rig, as idicated. he i the lastchai with a Lc Ji see belw t where yu bega.

DO NOT CUT THE THREAD.

ROUND 2: Wr a plit Rig as idicated 8/8 t climb ut/bridge t the extrud. Ctiue the rud with Rigs f 6 + 6 ad chais f8 - 8 util the firsthalf f the fial chai withut the pict has bee wred.

Right t Left - frm the plit Rig bac t where yu stpped the last chai.

Yu might say, "Oh, that's easy. Just d Lar's Head Kts". he prblem,thugh, is that the space is't large eugh t get yur shuttle thrugh t frmthe ts s the sluti is t mae what is called a S plit Chai.

It wuld be a gd idea t practice a C wrig a ilt pi r smethigsimilar. he part f the pi with the pit will represet the cre thread f theLar's Head Kts. Hld the pi as i the diagram with the pit t the left. he prti f the thread frm where the "lg tail" the diagram is tied t the pi., gig twards the right, will represet the cre thread cmig frm lastD yu made the last chai f the mtif. Clse the pi ad tae the threadver t the right side f the pi this represets the small space betwee the first

wr the Lc Ji, isert yur h frm the bac f the wr it the rigat the right ed f the pi. ae the cre thread ver t the right ad with theh, pull a lp f this thread thrugh t the bac. Pass the shuttle thrughthis lp frm frt t bac ad pull it tight.

he part f the pi with the thread ruig algside it as well as the threadwill be the cre. O the mtif this will be ly a sigle thread which is t seasy t wr ver sice it is flexible ad iclied t stretch.

wr the first half f the first stitch, with the thread frm the Lc Ji,allw a lp t fall dw the bac f the pi first illus. which fllws. Withthe pit/h yur shuttle, pull this lp thrugh t the frt f the pi ad pass the same shuttle thrugh this lp frm tp t bttm. Mae sure that thelp-thread is t twisted. Pull the shuttle dwwards ad sug the stitch as far t the right side as it will g. At this pit the stitch ls as if it's up-sidedw - it is. It will straighte up with the bar t the tp ce yu cmplete thesecd half f the stitch.

Next, allw the shuttle thread t hag dw i a lp at the frt f the pi.

Brig the lp thrugh frm frt t bac with the h ad pass the shuttlethrugh this lp. Agai, d't allw it t twist. Befre tighteig up thissecd half f the stitch, pull the first half up s that the bar is at the tp f the pi. Pull up the shuttle t tighte the secd half the sug it up clse t thefirst half. his equals a D. Wr a few mre util yu're quite sure f themethd. Nw bac t the mtif:

Mae aLc Ji leavig the thread betwee the last D ad the LJ ust a tad shrter fr sme reas it seems t stretch whe the ts are added tha the legthf the first half f the chai. his particular chai splits i half - be aware thatsme d t. his will be the cre thread t which yu will wr the ts.

Nw wr eight "D", usig the methd yu ust practiced ver the pi, frmright t left maig the required umber f stitches whe yu will meet the lastD the first half f the chai.

Nw we'll wr a False Pict with a Lc titch t get t the ext rudwithut cuttig the thread.

False Picot: his is ather techique used t climb ut/bridge. D t ReverseWr. Leave a small space apprx 1/8" the thread frm the left the wr a Lc titch, as fllws:

Lock Stitch: his is made by wrig with the shuttle cmig frm the rightside f the chai. Mae e half f a D as usual the the secd half with a

utrasferred stitch. Or vice versa - EENY AMOUE suggests yu might
