InaprevioustutorialIhaveshownhowtoenablethesharingserviceinUbuntuandchangetheWorkgroupsothatitisthesamewithalltheothercomputersinyournetwork,thusmakingnetworkingbetweenUbuntuandWindows7easier.InthistutorialIwillshowhowtosharefoldersinUbuntuandhowtoaccessthemfromWindows7computers.
NOTE:ArticleupdatedtoworkonUbuntuv10.10&11.04.
EnableFileSharing&ConfiguretheWorkgroupInorderforUbuntuandWindows7tosharefiles,theyhavetobeconfiguredtobepartofthesameWorkgroup.Also,filesharingneedstobeenabledinUbuntu.
TochangeyourWindows7workgroup,see:HowtoChangetheWorkgroupinWindows7&Windows8.ToconfigureUbuntu,see:HowtoEnableFileSharing&ChangetheWorkgroupinUbuntuLinux.
Oncetheseitemsaresetupcorrectly,proceedwiththistutorial.
HowtoShareFoldersinUbuntuFirst,opentheHomeFolderinUbuntu,foundinthePlacesmenu.
HowtoShareFoldersinUbuntu&AccessthemfromWindows7

Browsetothefolderyouwanttoshare.RightclickonittoopenthecontextualmenuandclickonSharingOptions.
TheFolderSharingwindowwillopen.ChecktheboxnexttoSharethisfolder.Then,intheSharenamefield,typethesharenameyouwanttouse.IntheCommentfieldtypeanythingyouwantorjustleaveitemptytheresnoneedtocompleteit.Ifyouwanttoallowotherstocreateanddeletefilesinthefolderyouaresharing,checktheboxnexttoAllowotherstocreateanddeletefilesinthisfolder.Also,ifyouwanttoallowGuestaccess,checktheboxnexttoGuestaccess(forpeoplewithoutauseraccount).Whendone,clickonCreateSharetoactuallysharethefolder.

IfyouhaveselectedtheoptionAllowotherstocreateanddeletefilesinthisfolderapopupshowsup,askingifyouwanttoaddsomepermissionstothefolderyouaresharing.ClickontheAddthepermissionsautomaticallybutton.Now,thefolderissharedwiththerestofthenetwork.
Note:WerecommendthatyouonlysharefoldersfoundorcreatedintheHomeFolderbecausethosearefoldersonwhichyourusernamehasownership.IfyoutrytoshareafolderoutsidetheHomeFolder,youwillreceivethefollowingerrormessage:netusersharereturnederror255:netusershareadd:cannotsharepathaswearerestrictedtoonlysharingdirectoriesweown."Thiserrorappearsbecauseyoudonthaveownershiponthosefolders.InordertoshareanyofthemyouhavetogothroughacomplicatedprocedurethathasthepotentialtoaddsecurityriskstoyourUbuntucomputer.

AccessUbuntuSharedFoldersfromWindows7AfteryousharedafolderinUbuntu,letsseehowtoaccessthatfolderfromaWindows7computer.
OpenWindowsExplorer.ClickonNetworktoviewalistwithallcomputersavailable(turnedonatthattime)inthenetwork.

DoubleclicktheUbuntucomputeryouwanttoaccess.Alistwithallthesharedfoldersanddevicesfromthatcomputeropens.
Doubleclickthefolderthatyouwanttoaccess.IfyouhaventsetupthesharedfoldertoallowGuestaccess,youareaskedtointroduceausernameandpassword.
Inthefirstinputfield,typethenameoftheUbuntucomputerfollowedbyabackslash(\")andthenameoftheuseraccountwithaccesstothesharedfolder.Inthesecondinputfieldtypethepassword.IfyouwantWindowstorememberyourusernameandpassword,checktheboxnexttoRemembermycredentials.Whendone,clickonOK.
Nowthecontentofthesharedfolderisshown.

I'vebeentryingtosharepasswordprotectedfoldersonmyUbuntu(DesktopinstalledontopofKubuntu)11.04laptopforalmosttwoweeksnow.Ihavenotbeenabletodoso,asmyWindows7HomePremiuminstalledonadesktopmachinehasinvariablyandrepeatedlygivenmethemessage"Loginfailed:incorrectpassword"wheneverIhavetriedtoopenthefolderseitherofthosesharesrepresentfromWin7.AllowingGuestaccessworksfine,andI'dbesatisfiedwithit,exceptthatunderGuestaccess,anyfilescreated,copiedto,orsavedintheshareinvariablyhavetohavetheirpermissions,ownershipandgroupIDchangedinLinux.Iknowthisisn'tnecessarywhenapasswordprotectedsharehasfilescreated,copiedtoorsavedinit,becausethefile'sumaskissetcorrectlyinsmb.conforsomewhereelse"underthehood"inLinux.
Ihavealsodiscoveredthat,unlessonemountsone'sownsharedfolderinUbuntuLinux,thereisabsolutelynowayofspecifyingthatshare'sumasknottomention,thisworkaroundseemsonlytoapplytofilescreatedinsharesfromloggedincomputersrunningUbuntu,Debianorsomeother'flavor'ofLinux.
Sowhatwehavehereistheproverbial'dogchasingitsowntail.'
ThelastversionofWindowsIranonanyofmycomputerswasWindowsXPProSP3.It'ssadtothinkthatinthelastsixorsevenyears,Microsoft,intryingtomakeupforsecurityflawsandgaffesinthepast(ofthisIhavenodoubt),havecompletelyruinedwhatmostfolksmighthavebeeninclinedatonetimeoranothertocall"theirbaby."Samba,tomanypeopleIknow,issynonymouswith"Windowsfilesharing"they'resurprisedwhenItellthemit'smaintainedbyaseparateorganizationhavinglittleornothingtododirectlywithMicrosoft.Nowitwouldbefoolishforanyonetomaketheconnection,fullstop,betweentheoneandtheother.
Inshort,thereisnowaytoaccesspasswordprotectedfoldersonUbuntumachinesrunningSMB/CIFSfromanyincarnationofWindows7,becausewhatWindows7runsisobviouslynot"straightSamba."
Buttakeheart:mostISPsblockthehighestTCP/UDPports,bynumber,byname139and445,andasthelowertwoorthreewereintendedstrictlyforLANuse,thewholeofhonesttogoodnessSambais,whilenot100%secure,asclosetoitasshouldmakenodifferenceformostusers.

Thisworkswelltoaccessthefiles.Myproblemiswriteprotections.IfIsavethefilefromaWindows7or8PCtotheshared/home/netsharedfolderitgetareadonlylockonit.Iamabletofixthusvia
sudo chown -R -L -H -v {username} *
Buthavingtotodothiseachtimeisannoying,AnddoingthismakesitReadonlytotheWindowsPCandtheotherLinuxPC.Inotherwords,Icanseethefilesbutcan`tsaveoverthemfromanotherPC.
