HOW TO GET THERE?

WHAT DRIVES THE TEACHERS?

•Teachers want to train their students to perform well at the final exam: they teach the curriculum and train for exams, SO:

•Make sure curriculum requirements in all subjects must reflect the goal of using ICT and train new competencies

•Exam forms must reflect these goals - if not, pedagogical practice will not change: allow students to use ICT during exams

EDUCATE AND TRAIN TEACHERS IN PEDAGOGICAL USE OF ICT

•Teachers want ICT training, see OECD's TALIS

•Not just technical training, but help to make pedagogical meaningfull use of ICT, so we can increase the learning outcome

•When every teacher gets a personal computer you take a giant step forward

BUT HOW?

•2009: Tjeerd Plomb: Lack of clear evidence of a positive learning outcome - beside the training og 21 century competences

•We need pedagogical research on the learning outcome of using ICT to influence initial teacher education + in-service training

•so teachers gain confidence implementing learning with ICT in a dialogue based learning process

•then teachers' fear of loosing control diminish

ESSENTIAL CONDITIONS WHEN MOVING AHEAD

•Engage in a dialogue with learners to include their informal experiences, when using ICT, in the learning process

•Support of school management is essential: support the goals when allocating resources and create an atmosphere that allows room for 'trial-and-error'

•A final point: To increase the use of ICT in education should not be a goal in itself. But to use ICT when relevant to increase the learning outcome and students' creativity, innovation and 21 century skills makes sense

CONCLUSION

•Curriculum and exam reforms - do not only focus on PISA performance in reading, math and science

•Call for pedagogical research on how to increase the learning outcome in subjects when using ICT
