In a progressive city like Madison, WI, environmental responsibility is second nature. Home of Earth Day and the first city to offer curbside recycling, we consistently rank as one of the greenest cities in the country.
Since founding in 1973, our aim at Great Big Pictures, Inc. has been to conserve natural resources and reduce waste, in every level of produc-tion, in every aspect of business. In an often-”price first, environment second” industry, we are driven to find and partner with companies who share this common goal and seek to find environmentally conscious print solutions.
Energy Conservation and Alternative Sources
Great Big Pictures, Inc. is a partner in Madison Gas & Electric’s Green Power Tomorrow program. 50% of all power we purchase is generated by regional wind farm, biomass, and local solar panels. This offsets 726,037 lbs of coal, and 1,073 tons of carbon dioxide each year.
Great Big Pictures, Inc. is a member of the EPA Green Power Partnership.
Great Big Pictures, Inc. is working with Focus on Enrgy to research the potential for solar hot water panels and other on-site energy alternatives.
Our thermostats, photographic processors, and lights in certain areas such as restrooms are time/temperature controlled to conserve energy when not in use.
High performance T5 fluorescent light bulbs are used throughout our facility, which allow the use of ballasts that don’t contain and PCB’s. We also have a ‘No lights if not in use’ policy to ensure that electricity is not wasted.
Reductions in our delivery fleet and purchase of more fuel-efficient vehicles save an estimate 1,000 gallons fo fuel each year, equivalent to keeping 19,600 lbs of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
Recycling and Waste Management Systems
Cardboard: Great Big Pictures, Inc. recycled 35 tons in 2008. This provides enough recycled paper to print 7 million sheets of newsprint and save 600 mature trees.
Cardstock: Great Big Pictures, Inc. recycled 30 tons in 2008. This saved 200 cubic yards of lanfill space and provided enough relaim revenue to purchase a baler used solely for cardstock compacting.
Polystyrene (or Plastic #6): Great Big Pictures, Inc. recycled over 5 tons of scrap in 2008. This saved 3,425 gallons of oil otherwise used to produce new plastics.
Silver: Great Big Pictures, Inc. uses a silver recovery system to collect the metal as it washes out of photographic processors. On average, Great Big Pictures, Inc. collects 20 lbs. of silver each moth. This reclaim value pays our monthly waste management bill.
Scrap office paper is collected and bound into note pads or reused in copy machines.
We use heat exchangers to recycle both heated and cooled air and an extensive air scrubbing system to ensure that we don’t inject anything from our printing processes into the air.
Great Big Pictures, Inc. donates tons of scrap or discontinued media to local schools and community centers.
Madison’s single-sort recycling program allows us to easily collect various plastic, glass, and paper products for local recycling. We also recycle metals and out-dated IT equipment.
Energy Conservation and Alternative Sources
Great Big Pictures, Inc. is proud to participate in the MPowering Business Pro-gram. Partnering with the City of Madison, Madison Gas and Electric, Focus on Energy, and Sustain Dane, we are working to become more sustainable, educate our staff, and set an example in our community. MPower goals in 2009:
• Reduce energy use by 10%.• Reduce our corbon footprint.• Enroll 30% of staff in education programs to promote sustainability. • Participate in energy audits with MG&E and Focus on Energy. • Conduct preliminary assessments to determine feasibility of solor energy.
Great Big Pictures, Inc. uses 100% post-consumer recycled paper for all office and paper products that are used in the day-to-day functioning of our facility.
