Without air, water, and land, life on earth would not be possible. Yet people have been polluting the very things that keep us alive.

Pollution is a broad term that covers any dirty or harmful substance in the environment. It affects all living and nonliving things in the environment.

WHAT IS POLLUTION?

WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?

Air pollution occurs when the air contains gases, dust, fumes or odor in harmful amounts.

Caused by: erupting volcano dust storm forest fires oil spills chemicals breaking down - then releasing harmful

substances into the air

Page 8: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

Air pollution can: Produce a range of respiratory issues: irritation of the airways, coughing or difficulty breathing Decreased lung function Aggravated asthma Development of chronic respiratory disease in children Development of chronic bronchitis or chronic obstructive lung disease Premature death in people with heart or lung disease, including death from lung cancer Chest tightness and shortness of breath Wheezing, chest pain, dry throat, headache or nausea

Also: Irregular heartbeat Irritation of the eyes

EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION

EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION

Smog: a yellow-brown haze that forms when sunlight reacts with air pollution. People are advised to stay indoors on days when smog level are high.

Acid Rain: burning fossil fuels can make the rain more acid than normal. The gasses mix with water vapor that falls to the Earth. Over time, it can destroy living things – especially trees, plans and fish.

Destruction of the ozone layer- the shield (ozone layer) is what protects living things from ultraviolet radiation. Some types of air pollution cause the ozone layer to deteriorate, which allows excess UV radiation to reach the earth’s surface.

- can lead to skin cancer and a weakened immune system

Particulate matter (small airborne particles) is among the most detrimental pollutants. Studies link it with increased rates of chronic bronchitis, lung cancer and heart disease. “Particles smaller than 10 micrometers in diameter pose the greatest threat to human health,” said Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director at the Centre of Science and Environment. “They can not only get deep into a person’s lungs but can also enter the blood stream.”The WHO advises that fine particles of less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) should not exceed 10 micrograms per cubic meter. At the top of the WHO ranking, Delhi had 153 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter.

WHAT IS WATER POLLUTION?

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater).

It occurs when pollutants are

directly or indirectly put

into water without adequate

treatment to remove harmful

compounds.

Page 20: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

Some types of water pollutants:-Sewage: wastewater from your shower, bathtub, washing machine, dishwasher, kitchen sink, and toilet

-Harmful industrial chemicals

-Pesticides – used to control insects & pests

-Trash and debris

To keep water clean, use detergents that are biodegradable- broken down easily in the environment.

All forms of life on earth depend on water. The earth’s water is polluted by various kinds of wastes, chemicals, and other substances.

ADAPTING OUR WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS TO CLIMATE CHANGE PRESENTS ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY.

Page 25: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

•Highly polluted water can harm internal organs like heart and kidneys.

•Pesticide contamination of ground water can cause endocrine and reproductive problems to animals and humans.

•Sewage contamination carries harmful pathogens and causes disease outbreak.

•Pesticides like organophosphates and carbonates affect and damage the nervous system and are carcinogenic.

•Diseases, like hepatitis, are caused by eating seafood that is poisoned or contaminated.

•Cholera and other diseases can occur due to poor drinking water quality from contaminated waters. This is more common in developing nations.

EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION

WHAT IS LAND POLLUTION?

Land pollution is the deterioration/degradation (the act or process of damaging or ruining something : the act of treating someone or

something poorly and without respect) of Earth's land surfaces often caused by human activities and their misuse of land resources.

This type of pollution includes:- solid waste - hazardous wastes

Page 30: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

Solid Waste

Solid waste is any discarded material.

EXAMPLES:garbagesludge from a wastewater treatment plant

foodclothesetc.

Most solid waste produced by households and businesses goes to landfills- huge pits where wastes are dumped and buried.

Hazardous Waste

It is waste that is dangerous or potentially harmful to our health or the environment.

Hazardous wastes can be liquids, solids, gases, or sludges.

Examples: cleaning fluidspesticidespaintsfuelsfertilizerbatteries…

EFFECTS OF LAND POLLUTION

Contaminated lands and environments can cause:

various kinds of cancers

problems in the human respiratory system

problems on the skin like rashes

Conservation

Page 41: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

Many natural materials are nonrenewable resources- substances that cannot be replaced once they are used.

CONSERVATION

Conservation is the saving of resources. The best way to conserve a resource is to use less of it.

Page 42: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

Precycling is a conservation method used to reduce waste before it occurs. We can “prevent recycling” by taking a little action before buying.

Examples: If you buy "long life" products (such as batteries and light bulbs) or

"concentrated" products, you not only prevent buying unnecessary packaging, but you prevent more products from ending up in a landfill.

Look for products in refillable containers, then reuse the containers. Bring a cloth or reusable plastic bag to the store to carry your

purchases so you won’t need to recycle the plastic or paper bags. Don’t buy disposable items. Buy items that use the least amount of packaging materials

Page 43: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

The best way for individuals to make a difference is to practice the three Rs: Reduce using our resources in order avoid waste. Reuse items by repairing them, selling them, donating

them, or finding new uses for them. Recycle materials so that they can be made into

something else.

WHAT ARE THE 3 R’S?

Global Warming & Climate Change

Page 47: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

Global warming refers to the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's surface.

Climate change is the extreme weather patterns brought on by an increase in the earth’s temperature.

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

It is the process in which infrared radiation trapped by the atmosphere warms a planet's surface. A layer of carbon dioxide and other gases surrounding the earth traps the heat.

The name comes from an analogy with the warming of air inside a greenhouse compared to the air outside the greenhouse.

Page 50: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

An increase in global temperatures is expected to cause many changes, including:

• sea level rise

• increased intensity of extreme weather events

• changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation

Other effects of global warming include changes in agricultural yields, glacier retreats, species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease carrying vectors.

WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT?

Page 51: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school

There is ongoing political and public debate worldwide regarding what, if any, action should be taken to reduce or reverse future climate change or to adapt to its expected

outcomes.

BACKGROUND:

SEVERE WEATHER EVENTS; CAUSED BY CLIMATE CHANGE, CAN LEAD TO MANY HARDSHIPS. ECONOMIC PROBLEMS STEMMING FROM DAMAGED INFRASTRUCTURE (BRIDGES, ROADS, ETC.), DESTROYED AGRICULTURAL BUSINESSES (FARMS, RANCHES, ETC.) AND LOSS OF PROPERTY/LIFE ARE THE OBVIOUS CHALLENGES. HOWEVER, WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND PROPERTY LEFT BEHIND? WHAT AFFECT DO NATURAL DISASTERS LIKE FLOODS, BLIZZARDS, HURRICANES AND WILDFIRES HAVE ON THE PEOPLE WHO SURVIVED?

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT?

Change a light

Replacing one regular light bulb

with a compact

fluorescent light will save 150 pounds of

carbon dioxide per

year.

Drive lessWalk, bike, carpool

or take mass transit to work and school. You’ll save

one pound of carbon dioxide for

every mile you drive.

Recycle moreYou can save 2400 pounds of carbon dioxide per

year by just recycling ½ of your household garbage.

Use less hot waterIt takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less water by installing low flow showerheads and

washing clothes in cold water (about 850lbs per year).

Avoid products with a lot of packaging

You can save 1200lbs of carbon dioxide if you cut your garbage by

10%.

Plant a treeA single tree will absorb one ton

of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

Buy local products (less fuel, oil used for transportation)

Use biodegradable detergents that are broken down easily in the environment.
