EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
Smog: a yellow-brown haze that forms when sunlight reacts with air pollution. People are advised to stay indoors on days when smog level are high.
Acid Rain: burning fossil fuels can make the rain more acid than normal. The gasses mix with water vapor that falls to the Earth. Over time, it can destroy living things – especially trees, plans and fish.
Destruction of the ozone layer- the shield (ozone layer) is what protects living things from ultraviolet radiation. Some types of air pollution cause the ozone layer to deteriorate, which allows excess UV radiation to reach the earth’s surface.
- can lead to skin cancer and a weakened immune system

Particulate matter (small airborne particles) is among the most detrimental pollutants. Studies link it with increased rates of chronic bronchitis, lung cancer and heart disease. “Particles smaller than 10 micrometers in diameter pose the greatest threat to human health,” said Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director at the Centre of Science and Environment. “They can not only get deep into a person’s lungs but can also enter the blood stream.”The WHO advises that fine particles of less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) should not exceed 10 micrograms per cubic meter. At the top of the WHO ranking, Delhi had 153 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter.

WHAT IS WATER POLLUTION?
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater).
It occurs when pollutants are
directly or indirectly put
into water without adequate
treatment to remove harmful
compounds.
![Page 20: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649dbc5503460f94aaecca/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Some types of water pollutants:-Sewage: wastewater from your shower, bathtub, washing machine, dishwasher, kitchen sink, and toilet
-Harmful industrial chemicals
-Pesticides – used to control insects & pests
-Trash and debris
To keep water clean, use detergents that are biodegradable- broken down easily in the environment.
All forms of life on earth depend on water. The earth’s water is polluted by various kinds of wastes, chemicals, and other substances.

Conservation
![Page 41: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649dbc5503460f94aaecca/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
Many natural materials are nonrenewable resources- substances that cannot be replaced once they are used.
CONSERVATION
Conservation is the saving of resources. The best way to conserve a resource is to use less of it.
![Page 42: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649dbc5503460f94aaecca/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
Precycling is a conservation method used to reduce waste before it occurs. We can “prevent recycling” by taking a little action before buying.
Examples: If you buy "long life" products (such as batteries and light bulbs) or
"concentrated" products, you not only prevent buying unnecessary packaging, but you prevent more products from ending up in a landfill.
Look for products in refillable containers, then reuse the containers. Bring a cloth or reusable plastic bag to the store to carry your
purchases so you won’t need to recycle the plastic or paper bags. Don’t buy disposable items. Buy items that use the least amount of packaging materials
![Page 43: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649dbc5503460f94aaecca/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
The best way for individuals to make a difference is to practice the three Rs: Reduce using our resources in order avoid waste. Reuse items by repairing them, selling them, donating
them, or finding new uses for them. Recycle materials so that they can be made into
something else.
WHAT ARE THE 3 R’S?

Global Warming & Climate Change
![Page 47: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649dbc5503460f94aaecca/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Global warming refers to the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's surface.
Climate change is the extreme weather patterns brought on by an increase in the earth’s temperature.
![Page 48: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649dbc5503460f94aaecca/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT
It is the process in which infrared radiation trapped by the atmosphere warms a planet's surface. A layer of carbon dioxide and other gases surrounding the earth traps the heat.
The name comes from an analogy with the warming of air inside a greenhouse compared to the air outside the greenhouse.
![Page 50: How do you define the environment? Your environment is your surroundings. It includes all the living and nonliving things around you. EXAMPLES: home school](https://reader038.vdocuments.site/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649dbc5503460f94aaecca/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
An increase in global temperatures is expected to cause many changes, including:
• sea level rise
• increased intensity of extreme weather events
• changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation
Other effects of global warming include changes in agricultural yields, glacier retreats, species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease carrying vectors.

Change a light
Replacing one regular light bulb
with a compact
fluorescent light will save 150 pounds of
carbon dioxide per
year.
Drive lessWalk, bike, carpool
or take mass transit to work and school. You’ll save
one pound of carbon dioxide for
every mile you drive.
Recycle moreYou can save 2400 pounds of carbon dioxide per
year by just recycling ½ of your household garbage.
Use less hot waterIt takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less water by installing low flow showerheads and
washing clothes in cold water (about 850lbs per year).
Avoid products with a lot of packaging
You can save 1200lbs of carbon dioxide if you cut your garbage by
10%.
Plant a treeA single tree will absorb one ton
of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.
Buy local products (less fuel, oil used for transportation)
Use biodegradable detergents that are broken down easily in the environment.
