How did you attract/appeal to your target audience?

In order to appeal to my target audience I did various research techniques in my research and planning stages. I did some audience research which consisted of me asking 5 questions to a few people. I did these questions to research into similar products to find out what my target audience buy into. These questions were about indie music magazines and questions such as 'Would you buy this magazine if you saw it?' and 'Do you like the colours used on this magazine why?' I did this so I can make my magazine relatable to the audience and do what my audience wanted me too. Some of the answers to the first question were 'yes, because I like the artists on the front' and 'Of course! I have bought them before, it's my type of music and the magazine gives me so much information' This feedback really helped me decide on what I would do with my magazine. I obviously couldn't use oasis on my front cover so I chose Ethan and seriously made him look like a big artist. Also I tried to put as much content in as possible as my audience want information. The second question had responses such as 'Yes, they stand out and fit together well' and 'The colours are really cool, and different to most magazine so they stand out on the shelves.' This feedback really helped me as it helped me to decide on what colours Iwas going to use. I choose to use red white and black in a three colour palette as they are very commonly associated with indie magazines and are obviously recognized and appreciated.

I also did some initial genre research in which I looked at successful indie music magazines and compared them to each other to see the similarities so I knew what my chosen genre expected from my magazine. From this research I created a repertoire of my chosen genre. The repertoire was:

Three colour palette of black, red and white

Very indie costumes, tartan shirts, harrington jackets, oversized t-shirts, skinny jeans, doc martens.

Very big bold fonts

Long, dark hair

Centrally framed large image

Big bold mast head

Large page numbers

I then came up with a set of conventions that i was to follow if i wanted to make my magazine look successful and professional. These were:

Use black and white photos

Use bold titles in bright red, white and black colours

Have a centrally framed large image

Use very big page numbers

Use indie clothing

Use medium shots

Use very clear bold fonts

Model using a very stern, blank facial expression

I really think I stuck to these conventions and without these research i do not think iwould have made my product as professional as I did.
