The idea of beauty• My original idea was beauty and how its shown through

paintings. As I developed this idea I came up with different types of theories…

How do different cultures have a different portrayal of beauty?Beauty in objects and nature

How do men and women portray beauty?• Until I thought about beauty icons for example Cleopatra, I

expanded this idea of beauty and decided to explore how influential and powerful women are portrayed through paintings, which is usually beautiful and colourful.

Anne Frank Marilyn Monroe Joan of Arc Billie Holiday

Audrey Hepburn Malala YousafzaiCleopatra

• How are powerful & influential women

portrayed in paintings?

Cleopatra by Nelya Shenklyarska Audrey Hepburn by Ismeta Gruenwald

Marilyn Monroe by Paul Lovering Billie Holiday by Bruni Sablan

Nelya Shenklyarska• Born: Eastern Europe on April 4th 1961• Mediums: Oil on canvas, Acrylic on canvas• Biography: Worked as an art instructor Masters degree in fashion design Over 30 years of experience with Oil on canvas Painted over 700 paintings (either women or nature)

• She explains that as an artist she’s driven by curiosity, wonder and desire to understand and describe the world. Shenklyarska likes to mix images and philosophies from different places and times. She also says that she paints with an impulse of inspiration and always carries a positive power.

• I enjoy her work because of the bold colours she uses which presents the women she paints as very powerful and as though they are in control. Her Cleopatra painting stood out to me the most because of the way she has been positioned in the middle and the background is blurred out which emphasises that Cleopatra was a powerful and independent women in the Egyptian times.

Ismeta Gruenwald • Born: Austria • Mediums: Acrylic and watercolours • Biography:

“I find not being bound by traditional methods gives me the freedom to be as inventive and innovative as my creative inspiration allows”.

• The reasons why I love Gruenwald’s work is the fact that she allows the paint to do as it wants. For example, letting the paint drip down makes her work striking and is more fun to look at as an audience.

Paul Lovering• Born: Edinburgh Scotland September 6th • Mediums: watercolours• Biography:

“watercolour artist who is inspired by legends of the past and present”

• The reason I like this artist’s work is the way he uses watercolours to give a realistic view of famous people but also the bright colours such as the pinks and oranges gives the sense of beauty and femininity. In addition I believe the colours are chosen specifically to express what that person is like which is very interesting as it gives Lovering’s paintings a deeper meaning underneath.

Bruni Sablan• Born: Sao Paulo, Brazil in the mid-20th century• Mediums: Acrylic on canvas• Biography:

She was influenced a lot by music and art as it was run through her family because her father (joseph parello) was an

artist and architect.

• I enjoy Sablan’s work because of the brushstrokes she uses are very quick and there isn't much blending involved, giving her work this bold and dramatic affect. Her painting of Billie Holiday stood out to me the most as it looks fun and expressive due to the facial expression on the person.
