PREFACE

The data presented in this paper are based on the religion of the head of the household collected through the Household Schedule during the 1981 Census. These data relate to six main religious communities viz., Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Siks, Buddhists and Jains and 'Other religions and persuasions' and 're1igion not stated'. The data are presented in Tabk HH-15 Household Population by religion of head of household, Appendix A-Details of Religion shown under 'Other Religions and Persuasions'. In Main Table HH-15 the strength of which is 100 or more at State level and Appendix R-Details of other Religions and Persuasions the strength of which is less than 100 at State level. The data were tabulated manually during the tenure of Shri J. Tayeng, I.A.S. as Director of Census Operations, Maghalaya to whom I am grateful. I also thank Shri P. Padmanabha, I.A.s, ex-Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, Shri V.S. Verma, LA.S, the present Registrar General India and Shri V.P. Pandey, Joint Registrar General, India under whose able guidallce and direction this paper has been finalised and urought out in its present form. Thanks are due to Dr. N. G. INTRODUCTORY NOTE

Religion is an important and perhaps the basic cultural charactcrastic of the population. In a secular state like India several reli!!;ions have thrived and every decennial census provides an interesting picture of the religioUs persuasions of the people. The data on religion yielded by the census are of great interest to the public as well as to the scholars. At the census enumeration a variety of answers might have been provided to the questions on religion, some spurious and some merely sects to a major religion. A census enumerator had instructions to record the religion as actually returned by a respondent.

In the 1981 Census, question on religion was included in the Individual slip filled in for every person and the Household schedule filled in for a hOiehold. In question No.8 of the Individual slip, the religion of the person enumerated was recorded as returned. In Question No. 2 of part I the Household Schedule, the religion of the Head of the household as returned was filled in.

A household is defined for the purpose of Census as a group of persons who commonly live. together and would take their meals from a commoI1 kitchen unless the exigencies of work prevented any of them from doing so. There could be a household of persons related by blood or a household of unrelated persons, or a mix of both. Example. of unrtlll.ted hou5eholdll are boarding houses, messes, hostels, residential hotels rescue homes, jails, ashrams, etc. These are called institutional households. In the case of institutional households the information on religion of the head of the household was not collected in the Household schedule. However, the information on religion of each inmate of the institutional household was collected in the individual slip filled in by the enumerator for every person in the institutional household.

The head of the household for census purposes is the person on whom the chief responsibility for the maintenance of the household falls.

In the present paper the data on main religious communities as returned in question 2 of the Household Schedule of the 1981 Census are being made available. In respect of the irunates of the institutional households, however, the data have been abstracted from the relevant Individual slips as the household schedule does not provide data on religion in respect of the institutional household~. In the present paper the data on religion are presented for the State/District/ C.D. BlockJU.A.JTown.

Thus the data presented in this paper are based on (I) information on the religion of the head of the household in respect of normal households and the households of houseless population i.e.all households bar-

ring institutional households (2) information on the religion of each individual returned for question 8 of the Individual slip in respect of individuals in the institutional households.

The instructions to enumerators for filling up question 2 on religion of the head of the household in the household schedule are given below:-

"You have to record the religion of the head of the household as given by him against this question. While writing the religion, you have to write the a.bbreviations as follows on the line against this question and not in any dotted boxes provided at the end of the dotted line against this question:

For Hindu! Write H

For ]ains Write]

For Muslims Write M

For Sikhs Write S

For 'others' record actual religion as returned fully. If a person says that he has no religion, it may be recorded accordingly. If a person refuses to state .hi8 religion you may write 'religion not stated' . You should not enter into any argument with the household for filling up this question. You are bound to record faithfully whatever religion is returned by the head of the household. For institutional households, put 'X' against this question."

This table corresponds to table C-VII- Religion of 1961 and 1971. The only difference is that the figures for religion for 1961 and 1971 are based on th!' religion of t~e individua~ whereas the figures presented in. this tabl~. gIve the household population classified by rehglOn uf the hea.d of h?useholds in respect uf all households except mstltutlOnal households. In the case of institutional households, the information on the religion of each individual was abstracted from the individual slip. This table is followed by two appendices.

The Table gives data for persons, males and females separately for each of the six major religious communities viz., Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jains, Muslims and Sikhs by total, rural and urban for the Statc/District/C.D.BlockjU.A/Town. The number of households are also given. The religions

in the table have heen arranged in alphabetical order ~n? th: data presented include all population those hvmg III normal households and institutional households and the houseless population.

The figures of other religiuns have been grouped together in the column 'other religions and persuasions'. Details of other religions and persuasions, the strength of which at the State level is 100 and above each, appear in Appendix 'A' accompanying the table. In the case of each of the remainin" faiths the strength of which is less than 100 at Stat~ level, the total population for the State and the districts is given in Appendix-B.

Appendix C & D have not been presented in this paper as in the State of Mcghalaya, there are no such urban Aggiomeration which cut across the district or tebsil boundaries.
