Dear Families,
Sports Day is fast approaching and students have met in their sports teams on a number of occasions. They have elected sports captains, organised team members into specific events, practiced team events and learnt their team chants. We congratulate the following team captains and vice captains on their selection and look forward to their continued leadership as they oversee teams during future meetings and on sports day.

Information was sent home to families early last week. Attached to the newsletter is an outline of the sports day program. It is always an exciting day watching the students compete and seeing the cheering and sportsmanship displayed. We welcome all families and friends to come along and join in the fun.
A BBQ lunch is being offered to the school community at a cost of $1.00 per sausage. However feel free to bring along a picnic lunch to share with your children. Drinks may be purchased from the canteen. Tea and coffee will be available from Room 9.
We are always looking for volunteers to help out during events, if you are free to help please speak to your child’s teacher as I am sure they will welcome your assistance.
QUESTACON VISITS THURSDAY NEXT WEEK! Next week is Science Week and all classes will participate in the Shell Questacon travelling exhibition called “Science Circus”. The show is designed to stimulate and challenge an exploration of science and technology in students using everyday materials and props. The show will be adapted to the different year levels and cover a wide range of topics from bubbles and balance to collisions and chemistry and lots more. Students will be able to interact and engage in hands on activities.
STUDENT FREE DAY NEXT FRIDAY As part our involvement in the three year Visible Learning Project, we have our second training day next Friday 18/08/17. On this day teachers will be reintroduced to some of the key messages of Visible Learning and build on these messages to support the development of learners. The day will focus on understanding the actions we take and the environments we create as teachers, affect the types of learners we produce.
Kind Regards Anna Nayda

Tips to help your child with Maths
Communicating with children using Math Language at home
can help children understand Math. Talking About Math: Talking about mathematics with your child – whatever his or her age – helps strengthen their mathematical reasoning and understanding. Here are some ways to keep the talk engaging and focused while you support your child:
1. Revoice – Repeat what you heard your child say, then ask for clarification (e.g., “So you are saying it’s
an odd number?”).
2. Repeat/Restate – Ask your child to restate your reasoning (e.g. “Can you repeat what I said in your
own words?”).
3. Reason – Ask your child to apply his or her own reasoning to someone else’s reasoning (e.g. “Do you
agree or disagree? Tell me why.”).
4. Adding On – Prompt your child to participate further (e.g. “What more would you add to that?”).
5. Think Time – Wait several seconds (try five) to give your child time to think (e.g. “Take some time to
think.”). You may be surprised by how hard it is to stay silent in that time!
Below is a Math activity that you can do with your child. You can vary the activity to suit your needs or even set a time limit and see who can find the most numbers in that time.
