8 HOUSE AND HOME September 2012

Like most people I know, I spent the days leading up to Hurri-cane Isaac readying myself and my home with the typical storm rations and supplies. As the hours closed in on landfall, I found

myself fully expecting to lose power at home like I had during previ-ous hurricanes. In fact, for two straight days, I waited with dreaded an-ticipation for the moment when the lights and air conditioning would fl icker off, leaving me in the dark, sweaty and miserable. During wak-ing hours, I sat glued to my television and consumed every possible prediction, projection and report that could possibly be presented and summarily rehashed by the local news.

After the storm fi nally came and went, I considered the fact that I had wasted a lot of time and energy anticipating a power outage instead of spending my precious lighted and air conditioned moments doing something meaningful, or even pleasurable. With guilty refl ec-tion, I fi gure I could have used my time to fi nish a good book, clean out a closet (okay, scratch that), train my dog to do a new trick or sim-ply enjoy an old movie. Instead, I ingested and re-ingested the doom that was the local news. I was one of the lucky ones, yes, but I had little to show for my good fortune. Perhaps this is human nature, but it was reason for pause. If someone were to poll the many residents who spent time at home without power, I imagine they could produce a list of things they would have done if only they hadn’t been stuck inside sweating by candlelight!

Speaking of more productive pursuits, one of the things I enjoy most about the professional contests we sponsor at House & Home is the excitement and passion that is demonstrated by the winners. In this year’s Design Awards coverage, we will feature 30 award-winning projects between our last issue, this issue and the next, which includes a fi nale of the Top Design winner. Many of this year’s award recipients also were recognized in 2011, but they don’t dare rest on their laurels. Instead, they keep striving to deliver their very best work year after year. By their efforts, I’m inspired to improve the quality of my own work and hope others can fi nd reasons to feel inspired, too. ■

Correction:In the July/August 2012 issue, our Design Awards coverage featured winning decorators Jeanette Turk and Karlin O’Neal of “Interiors by Decorating Den,” when in fact the company name is Decorating Den Interiors. House & Home regrets the error.

Resting on your laurels is as dangerous as resting when you are walking in the snow. You doze off and die in your sleep. –Ludwig Wittgenstein

Outdoor living areas are im-portant in today’s hectic world. They create an outdoor escape

where homeowners can relax and unwind on weekends or after a long day at the offi ce. There are three main advantages to adding outdoor drapes to your outdoor living area:

First, they offer beauty, style and tranquil-ity to the space by offering any of an array

of styles and fabrics that can be coordinated with the rest of your outdoor décor. With just the right combination of fabrics, you can cre-ate any look, from tropical to elegant! Out-door drapes not only enhance the overall ambiance of your patio, they serve to frame architectural openings and soften hard lines and materials.

Second, outdoor draperies offer privacy to

your space, effectively screening views from neighbors and closing out the outside world.

Third, draperies offer protection from the outdoor elements and they adjust to suit the changing environment. When you’re relaxing on your patio, the sun and wind can become a factor. Adding drapes will allow you to continue enjoying your outdoor space while controlling those elements.

16 HOUSE AND HOME September 2012

In the months leading up to House & Home’s fi fth annual Design Awards competition, interior designers and decorators, architects, space planners and landscape architects and designers throughout the region were invited to submit their stand-out projects for recognition. The creativity, innovation, complexity and innate talent that are evident in each entry made selecting the winners a diffi cult task.

The award entries were divided into several specifi c categories with several dozen categories hav-ing nominations. In the July/August issue, 15 winning projects were featured in a variety of categories under the collective title of “Entertaining Spaces.” In this issue, the featured winners fi t the categories of “Intimate Spaces,” which include: Powder Room, Library, Study, Guest Bedroom, Nursery, Child’s Bedroom, Girl’s Bedroom, Boy’s Bedroom, Teen Bedroom, Master Bedroom – Small, Master Bedroom - Large and Master Suite. As a fi nale, this year’s Top Design winning project is also featured. Congratulations to all of the winners!

Library Rachel Cannon Lewis / SoHaus Interior Design

This functional study doubles as a comfortable sitting area where the homeowners watch television. The deep wall color swathes the room in richness, encouraging one to sit and read a good book. In the design process, the space needed to be made useful and well organized with storage, etc., but its design would also inspire a cozy atmosphere with lush velvet and hounds-tooth upholstery. Bookshelves contain a collec-tion of cherished books, photos and decorative objects while layered rugs add to the “collected” feel of the space.

PowderRoom

Ourso Designs LLC

With the goal of creating an old-world, farmhouse feel in their remodel of a French quarter home, space planner Richard Ourso and decorator Michelle Livings collaborated onspecifi cations in this powder room, which includes a vanity made from an old cabinet, salvaged and repurposed with a copper vessel sink and forged iron accessories with rust fi nish. The faucet is wall mounted and the mirror is custom made with antique glass. Walls are fi nished with American Clay. Among the comfort features, the toilet is comfort height with water sense to overcome old pipes in the historic building.

The entrance to this sophisticated home study is marked by a dramatic set of French doors opening into warm, walnut-stained maple floors. Smart looking woodwork is washed in custom stain blends to suit the six different types of wood and unique trim profiles. A dramatic arched wood window includes a unique cornice application and is framed by custom silk draperies. The lighted tray ceiling highlights the specialty finish overhead which coordinates with the multi-colored finishes on walls for added richness.

Guest BedroomRachel Cannon Lewis / SoHaus Interior DesignA playful collection of fabrics and accessories distin-guish this guest bedroom with its canvas of textured Venetian plaster walls painted a smooth shade of gray. The collection of blue and white plates ties in nicely with the custom navy and red throw pillows. A mirrored bedside chest serves as a nightstand and additional storage while adding a hint of glamour to the space. The pair of red lamps was a bargain purchase at Target, as was the pair of red Foo dogs. Layers of bedding create a haven for guests who will no doubt be thrilled to spend a few nights in this well-appointed space.

NurseryRachel Cannon Lewis / SoHaus Interior DesignA bedding ensemble from Pottery Barn Kids was the foundation for a nursery design project to suit a baby girl named Macey. Walls were painted a pale shade of lavender with black selected as the room’s main accent color. Hanging over the crib is a custom name decal accented with horizontal stripes on the left wall. A rocker/glider with a black and white ticking fabric was custom ordered to coordinate with the black painted crib and a chest of drawers that was retrofit with porcelain rose knobs from Anthropologie. Wall prints in white frames are pages taken from a fashion how-to sketch book. Featuring a geometric “M” pattern, the drapes and roman shade are made from custom-designed fabric the designer had printed onto white cotton and edged with purple ribbon trim.

Paint shades of Malachy Green and Mango Punch are the foundation of color in this child’s bedroom, tempered with white furniture and metallic finishes like the shimmery shag area rug and the silver and white wall appliqués. Crystal lamp accents offer touches of bling while a circle theme is evident in the etched mirrored nightstand. A small window is accented with a black satin Austrian top panel combined with white petal fabric for added texture, accented with black bead trim and a tassel tie back. Custom bedding is made with an embossed floral print fabric and includes an embroidered monogram.

The room’s doors, windows, casing, crown molding and baseboards also are hand glazed in multi tones. A boy’s wish list included a blue color scheme and a nod to the New England Patriots in a bedroom that avoided an over-the-top theme. His designer delivered a canvas of Solitude blue walls and accents of brighter Patriots team colors, like the red shelving unit between the two doors and the horizontal red stripes that encircle the room. Black contemporary furni-ture with brushed nickel hardware add contrast to the palette while custom tailored bedding with a boxed sham and red bolster offer stylish comfort. The window is framed with grommet-topped stationary panels made from black woven material and layered with a flat roman shade (striped fabric was railroaded to follow the horizontal lines in the room).

Teen Bedroom Aimee Walker, IADA, RES / Aimee Walker InteriorsWhen a teen asked to trade in her childhood antiques for some-thing more contemporary, her mother and decorator consented to furnishings that could follow her daughter to college. A bed with clean lines and a leather headboard is paired with a multi-functional dresser that converts into a TV console. A washable white duvet is decorated in green and blue leaf-patterned appliqués and blue suede pillows that coordinate with the blue silk draperies. Over the headboard, weaved chrome tile mirrors reflects light in an interest-ing pattern. The main focal point of the room is the decorator’s painted wall mural that depicts the New York skyline in metallic paint. The building windows serve as frames for cherished photos that change be easily changed or updated.

This master bedroom was a blank canvas of velvety gray walls and some spectacular moldings, so the designer kept to a largely monochromatic gray/taupe color scheme in her selection of the furnishings, including a custom designed iron bed with upholstered headboard. Yves Delorme bed-ding is flanked by a chest of drawers and a drop-leaf table that function as nightstands. The chaise lounge offers a great place to curl up and read a book while the custom framed intaglios create a dramatic impact against the egg-and-dart moldings.

Master Suite Rod Miller / R & D Design

Using a beautiful pool view as inspiration for this master suite project, Rod Miller re-designed, remodeled and furnished this mid-century mod-ern space to resemble a five-star, ocean-side hotel suite. A cool color palette that includes commissioned artwork by Gabe David unites with a special mix of bed linens purchased by the designer while vacationing in Italy and France. The sumptuous ambience continues in the adjoining master bath with glass mosaic tiles in ocean-themed colors warmed by dark-tone cabinetry for contrast. The soaking tub is accented with a glass fireplace and a lounging area with soft sheer curtains. Romantic lighting under the raised cabinetry reflects warmly onto the stone floors. Original art in this space was purchased by the designer from a small art gallery in Provence, France. n

macaroni with orange powder and hello

to my deluxe pasta dish that’s suitable

for the most elegant of affairs. Lump

crabmeat and sharp imported cheeses

will set this dish apart from

anything out of a cardboard

box. This dish works well

as a family style casserole

and is fantastic when

served in individual crocks

with a beautiful golden

brown gratin of buttered

breadcrumbs on top.

I still enjoy a good

grilled cheese on

occasion, and with

a little creativity

you can kick start this humble sandwich

to the next level by choosing updated

ingredients. This starts with quality bread;

something sturdy such as a crusty Italian

style loaf or sourdough. Choosing the

cheeses can be a difficult task if you, like

me, are torn between so many delicious

options. The best for a grilled cheese

with be firm enough to hold up to grilling,

yet soft enough to give that perfect

gooey, melted cheese center that creates

a beautiful stretch when you pull your

sandwich apart.

Pizza is very personal and means a

lot of things to a lot of people, from

fast-food thick crust pizza with lots of

sweet sauce to frozen mini pizza pies

that are unceremoniously cooked

in the microwave and hand-tossed

New York Style pizza with the best

ingredients cooked on a wood-

burning stone deck. My taste

for pizza as I get older (or just

plain “old” as my kids would

say) trends toward fresh, simple

and light. Making your own

pizza dough is very fun and satisfying, but

if you don’t have the time or you need an

idea for a quick and healthy alternative

for after-school munchies, take a look at

my pizza recipe using pre-made flatbread.

Everyone in the house can easily build

their personal creation just the way they

like.

Try these updated variations on classic

kid foods and broaden your families’

culinary horizons today. While young at

heart, these classics are all grown up.

CANVAS Born in 1955, my lifelong passion

for decorative arts culminated as a young

adult in the Berkshire Hills region of

Massachusetts where I worked in the

business of restoring, buying and selling

antiques. My background in woodworking,

metalworking and mechanical drawing

enhanced my appreciation for quality

and detail.

PRIMER With an affinity for the South, I

moved to Baton Rouge at the age of 21 to

focus on interior design while working at

McKay’s Interiors, then one of Louisiana’s

leading design firms. At LSU, I studied

the History of Furniture and Decorative

Arts. Ten years later at age 31, I ventured

out on my own with a hands-on approach

to creating furniture and original works

of art on display at Roy Phelps Gallery in

downtown Baton Rouge which closed in

2007 when the building was sold. In 2001,

Dauphine Mirror Co. commissioned me to

design a collection of mirrors which were

introduced at the Highpoint Market.

MEDIA My art pieces are mixed media

with an emphasis on reclaimed wood

products and metals. Whether I am

designing an interior setting for a client

or creating a work of art or a piece of

furniture, I approach design challenges

with artistic solutions.

GENRE The genre of a particular piece

is inspired in the moment, by the client

and the raw materials being used. I

am not limited in genre, only by client

expectations and the raw materials in

the mix.

INFLUENCE I am influenced by color,

texture and patina, particularly the way it

reflects or absorbs light. All are important

elements to the finished product.

DOLLARS & SENSE I have been

fortunate over the years to be able

to create works inspired by a range

of periods and styles and by the raw

materials at hand. I design and create

art and furniture to my liking as well as

commissioned works that complete a

client’s vision.

SHOW My work is always available at my

design studio in Saint Gabriel. I also have

some work on display at Tyler & Possa Law

Firm in Baton Rouge. I have participated in

art shows at local venues with other local

artists and I recently donated original works

of art to the 30th Annual Capital Chefs’

Showcase Silent Auction and Louisiana

Public Broadcasting’s Art & Travel Auction.

AHEAD I don’t know that there was

ever a big plan, but hope to continue to

create things forever using new materials

in old ways and old materials in new

ways. My mission statement is to create,

construct and produce one-of-a-kind

works that will withstand the test

of time. n
