Monkeys with JobsWhat kind of job might be good for a

monkey? Could it pick bananas? Could it climb ladders? It could certainly swing from trees!

Capuchin monkeys like these can learn to help people.

But would you be surprised to find out that some monkeys do have jobs? Some monkeys learn to help people who can’t do things for themselves. These kinds of monkeys are called helper monkeys.

This monkey has learned to feed food to this man.

Monkeys are also very smart, and they have the ability to learn how to do things.

But not all monkeys make good helpers. The best helper monkeys are small. A big monkey wouldn’t be very happy living in a house. Also, a monkey who might snap at people wouldn’t make a good helper.

This helper monkey has learned to sweep the floor with a special sweeper.

  • Learning to HelpHelper monkeys must learn skills

to help people. First, helper monkeys spend six years in the homes of volunteers, who watch them carefully. The people make sure the monkeys will make good helpers.

Next, the monkeys go to a training center. Teachers supervise the monkeys’ training for about two more years.

At the training centers, the monkeys learn many tasks. They learn to pick up objects such as keys and mouth sticks. They learn to turn the pages in a book. They even learn to scratch a person’s itch.

The monkeys are also taught not to misbehave. People with special needs must be sure the monkeys will always do what they are told. Monkeys are playful animals. But when they are working, helper monkeys can’t “monkey around.”

Starting to HelpAfter the monkeys finish their

training, each one goes to a home with a new human companion. In the home, the monkey will do things its companion can’t do. The monkey may bring water and food to its companion. It may put a CD in a player. It may open a jar and turn lights on or off.

An Important JobA helper monkey does important

work. But its most important job is just being a loyal friend. That might be a helper monkey’s favorite job of all.

Helper monkeys become very good friends.
