OVENIA Hostelling International SloveniaHostelling International Slovenia (HI Slovenia) is the only national representative of Slovenia in the International Youth Hostel Federation (Hostelling International – HI). HI is a non-governmental and non-profit organization active in about 90 countries in the world. The organization works closely together with UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization), WTO (World Tourism Organization) and other important international organization – also it was proclaimed the sixth largest organization that offers overnighting. With 4 million members it is one of the largest youth organizations in the world and is the only network of youth hostels with about 4.000 objects for spending the night, 1.5 million beds and 30-40 overnight stays annually.

HI has high standards for youth hostels, based on the treatment of the guests, security, cleanliness and privacy. But it is not its only role. Since it was established in 1932 it encourages young people for better intercultural understanding through informal education and peace, global friendship and environmentalism. The international organization, with a strong support of its national members, it offers interaction among youth of various nationalities and cultures, exchange of experience, getting to know their peers and after all themselves.

For this the organization has international programs for youth, above all the ones with lesser chances, through which we spread the mission of Hostelling International, which remained the same since 1932:

To promote the education of all young people of all nations, but especially young people of limited means, by encouraging in them a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and an appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities in all parts of the world, and as ancillary thereto, to provide hostels or other accommodation in which there shall be no distinctions of race, nationality, colour, religion, sex, class or political opinions and thereby to develop a better understanding of their fellow men, both at home and abroad.

HI Slovenia, with more than 40 hostels around Slovenia, ensures safe, budget friendly and quality boarding for all types of groups. This includes the educational field trips with various themes (history, art or language courses) as well as extracurricular activities for schools, students, sporting and other groups – or simply friends who want a joint active holiday.

Hostel Podčetrtek (Pension Ciril) is located in a quiet place opposite the thermal park. A bus stop is only 20 meters away and the train station just 100 meters away. The hostel can offer a stay for up to 25 people in rooms ranging from two and up to four beds. There are shared bathrooms for two or three bedrooms with a TV. There are rooms with a double bed and rooms with twin beds. Our hostel has several offers, from simple bed and breakfast, to half board, to full board, which includes three meals a day.

Our guests can use the meeting room, where they can also socialize or even have workshops. The hostel also has a cycling storage and a large terrace with a wonderful view.


The spa Terme Olimia, with its conference centre, a large sport hall and wellness center are just under a kilometre’s walk away. Just a bit further is the village of Podčetrtek, with pubs, stores and a pharmacy. There are many walking and cycling trails nearby. A nice field trip is also to visit the monastery and chocolate house of Olimje, where there’s also a golf course. You can also find wine houses, a cottage of the witch and many other local points of interest. Just 15 minutes away by car, there is the natural park of Kozjansko, with rich cultural and natural heritage.

Local sights and attractions



Vas OlimjeThe village of Olimije features a castle, with a church, that is a home to the Minorite order. The church boasts itself with baroque golden and black altars. The castle tower is a home to a famous pharmacy, with rich frescos, and is one of the oldest preserved monastery pharmacies in Europe. In front of the monastery is a botanical garden, with even 160 different species of medical herbs. Today the monks of the Minorite order live in the monastery.

The farms complete the tourist offer with genuine wines and home-made meals. You can also get home-made chocolate, beer… or enjoy a game of golf, go to the fairy-tale land, the land of deer and a petting zoo.

Kozjanski ParkThe preserved natural landscape along the River Sotla is among the oldest and largest protected areas in Slovenia. The protected area is a mosaic of hills and mountains of pre-Alpine range, there are also straights along the river and many flowery meadows with orchards of tall tree tops. The preserved natural and cultural heritage offer many opportunities for exploration, relaxation and joy. The variety of biotic diversity puts the area on the list of most important environmental protection zones in Slovenia and Europe, as most of the park is also part of Natura 2000 and is classified as the biosphere of Kozjansko and Obsotelje. The remote location of the landscape was the reason for a unique coexistence of nature, culture, tradition and contemporary life, which offer the visitor a unique view onto this special mixture.

The park has a lot to offer, especially for nature lovers, hikers, cyclists, photographers and all who love to get some rest and relaxation.

The park has many well marked trails and there are great possibilities for guided hikes through the meadow orchards, dry meadows, medieval square, a castle, old mills and pilgrimage churches.




Castle PodsredaThe castle of Podsreda stands of the northern side of the Orlica hill in the center of the park Kozjansko, at an elevation of 475m. From the northern side visitors get a great view of the medieval market of Modsreda, the valleys of Bistrica and Sotla, and even Croatian Zagorje mountains. The castle is one of most important pilgrimage architectural heritage in Slovenia, as the medieval core of the castle remained unchanged throughout centuries. It is made from two palacius, a tower with a chapel and a defence tower. The castle features a black kitchen, a knight hall, permanent exhibit of authentic furniture and occasional art collections. You can reach the castle on foot or by local road from the village of Podsreda.

Landscape park BočThe landscape park Boč - Donačka gora spreads between the broader Boč area and Plešivec. It is a geological and geographical most eastern part of the central Alpine massive of Karavanke. The park covers the area of 2151 hectares. The range continues with Donačka gora, which – however – is no longer a part of the park. The park features dense and well preserved forests with clearings, that people made in the past. The combination of pastures and forests offers great natural diversity and a part of the park is also part of the European Natura 2000 network.The symbol of the park is the eastern flower (Pulsatilla grandis), also called the big fuzzy one. It has gentile purple leaves that are covered with fuzz.

The main attraction of the park is the peak of Boč, as the park even has its name. It’s 979m tall and has a steel tower on top, with a great view! The tower is 20m tall and both together make up for the combine height of 1000m. You can drive up to the mountain cottage at the elevation of 658m and from there it would take about an hour to reach the top.

Rogaška SlatinaRogaška Slatina is among better known tourist towns of Slovenia, with a few century long tourist tradition. In the pavilion of Tempelj you can see the fountains of mineral water Donat, with its medically proven healing effects on intestines. You can also visit the glass makers of Rogaška, or walk down one of the beautiful promenades and stop by at one of many hotels. The surrounding hills offer many hiking trails as well as degustation of local wines and great cuisine.




Museum Staro selo Kumrovec (HR)There is a museum Staro selo, an open air ethnographical museum in Kumrovec, just on the other side of the Slovenian-Croatian border.

The centre of Kumrovec is protected as a whole as a rural historical site. The museum has 25 residential and 9 economic structures, with 8 auxiliary buildings. The museum features 2.800 exhibits that are almost all on a permanent display. It gives us an insight into the rural life and old traditions. The interesting park of the museum are the re-enactments of folklore and crafts, presented by puppets in traditional clothing’s and original artefacts. A part of museum is also the birth house of Josip Broz - Tito.

Open Air Museum RogatecThe permanent museum collection keeps the traditional folk architectural heritage of the sub-Pannonia style and the cultural tradition of the people from the area of Boč and Donačka gora alive, concentrating mostly on the 19th and early 20th century. All the artefacts, the arrangements of rooms, and interior equipment depict the functionality and connection between architecture and the rural life style of the people in the past, along with their material and spiritual linkage to the world.

The core of the museum are the original buildings and reconstructions of craftsmanship and economic buildings that were placed on the chosen locations at the exit of the historical square of Rogatec (just 7km from Rogaška Slatina). After the view of the house where people lived, you get to see the place where they kept animals, next a double hay-drying barn (kozolec toplar), the swine pit and the reconstructions of the well štepih, a winemaker’s house, the vineyard, smiths’ house and lodn – a rural store from between both world wars.

The museum offers organized tours and has an interesting educational programme of active ethnological workshops for youth and grownups. Museum demonstrations and crafts workshops, along with demonstrations of rural chores and cultural tradition (like weaving, hand knitting, blacksmith’s crafts, making Easter decorations and bread baskets, and much, much more) will surely satisfy even the most curious visitors. The traditional event called Likof, held on the nets-to-last Saturday of July, demonstrates how young lads used to work the fields with authentic tools and in authentic surroundings.
