What a blessing to have college students who desire to serve the Lord with their summer vacation! We’ve been blessed this summer to have Sabrina Staggs, a Go Now Missionary, from Tarleton State University Baptist Student Ministry, serving with us. The guest children have loved her as well as their families. Her leadership with our Sam Houston State University summer interns has been invaluable. Because she has been willing to serve and help families who are hurting, we were able to host a grieving wife whose inmate husband was dying in hospice care at our local hospital under guard. One of the joys of being a grandparent is that moment of seeing the little ones, finally, after a long period of time. The moment begins with the initial big smile on the child’s face, followed by the shrill shout, “DeeDee! Papa Mac!” And then comes the quick sprint to each other’s arms and the kiss on the cheek. Oh, we live for that moment! It can easily be described as individuals who are so extremely delighted by one another’s presence that they cannot help but express it openly.

An example of similar enthusiasm in the Bible is found in Luke 19:4. Jesus was passing through Jericho and Zaccheus “ran” to see Jesus.

Zaccheus’s running showed his expression of delight at being in the presence of Jesus. Nothing was going to stop Zaccheus from seeing Jesus.

The word "enthusiasm" literally means, "full of God." Maybe that’s why enthusiastic people are so often creative and joyful! There are five “I Wills” of enthusiasm:

1. I will be an energy-giver. Everyone loves and respects an energy-giver. These are the people who never need to be reminded of their work. They volunteer to do tasks others would resist. Energy givers maintain a good attitude while they work. Energy-takers and energy-wasters, on the other hand, are the ones who float through life without contributing much to anyone’s goals but their own. Ask daily, “Am I giving or taking energy?”

2. I will smile. A smile is contagious. A smile comes naturally when you see another person smiling. Smiling actually improves health.

3. I will treat every job as important. If you enjoy a job, enthusiasm comes naturally. It is difficult to be enthusiastic if you do not feel enthusiastic.

4. I will put my whole heart into what I do. Success requires going the “second mile.” Giving half our best yields half the results.

5. I will not be discouraged by failure. It’s easy to become discouraged when met with discouragement. Enthusiasm is seeing beyond the failure to the lessons and benefits of the failure.

Have you considered in what, and in whom, do you put your delight?
