As a proud member of theHorry Georgetown HomeBuilders Association, I am abeliever in building our industryas well as building ourcommunity. When it comes tocommunity building, there are alot of things we can do to makeour wonderful area an evenbetter place. This year, I've spenttime on things ranging frombeach sweeps, to blood drives, to
fund raisers for charity. There are always opportunities to make adifference and as leaders in our community we just need to seewhere we can help.
One specificopportunity I would liketo talk about is theHabitat for Humanity.Every year, amongstother things, the Habitatfor Humanity works tobuild homes for familiesin need. Throughcharitable donations ofmaterial, labor andmonetary contributions, they use these resourcesto build a home for a family that otherwise would not have a chance. An important part of the program is that the families that are selectedto earn their new home pass a series of requirements ranging fromcompleting class time, to putting sweat equity into the home. In thisway, the program ensures that people that are both needing andwilling to earn a home are given the opportunity.
Certain companies have been so generous as to fund and overseethe building of an entire house for a family for the Habitat forHumanity. However, such generous contributions are not the only
way to make adifference. Thisyear, I am helpingthe CoastalCarolinaAssociation ofRealtors with aHabitat forHumanity projectinvolving a hometo be built in the

New homebuilders and privatehomeowners have good reason to callContract Exteriors for their installationexpertise in roofing, siding, decking, andmore. Randy Hann founded the company in2009 after seeing the need for a morestructured approach in contract work withinthe new construction and remodelingindustry. This means, “Making sure you haveall the certifications, proper licensing, all thecorrect training, and the right staffing.” Thecore principle simply stated by Randy is, “Webelieve that technology, systems andprocesses are the way to achieve theconsistency and quality levels that all ourcustomers expect.”
Attention to this principle hasdistinguished and separated ContractExteriors from their competitors. Randy said,“We are the only contractor along theCarolina coast that has top designations from
manufacturers that are leading their industrycategories.” These designations include theGAF Master Elite Contractor for roofing, theJames Hardie Elite Preferred Installerdesignation for siding, and the Platinum ProContractor for AZEK decking and railing.
Co-owner Will McCourt heads Sales andMarketing while Randy oversees Production. He said, “I believe we are one of the fewcompanies that’s heavily vested in using thelatest technology for our scheduling, CRM,and estimating software.” There is nothingleft to chance at Contract Exteriors. Willadded, “We are driven by our process andprocedures to ensure that all of our
customers receive what they are expectingand paying for.” For homeowners looking tosell, a 2016 cost vs value survey conducted byRemodeling magazine revealed that installingnew siding, replacing the roof, and buildinga deck are among the top projects that canrecoup 72% or more of the money spentwhen the home sells within a year. Sellingaside, maintaining a home’s exterior makesgood economic and esthetic sense.
For homebuilders who collaborate withContract Exteriors there are cost andtimesaving benefits. Will said, “It’s rare tofind a company that can offer a builder thecomplete turn-key package for the shell ofthe house.” This minimizes the time abuilder’s superintendent has to deal with thedifferent trades, and helps control labor costsand eliminate expensive overtime.
The Contract Exteriors team is optimisticabout growth for themselves and new-homeconstruction. The company currently hasfour divisions: Wilmington, Myrtle Beach,Charleston and Hilton Head. They areexpecting to add three more divisions inmajor cities in the next year to continue toserve their building partners.

Nation’s team is building great homesfor these folks, and that people arehappy.”
Another important partner withNations Homes II is the Realtorcommunity. Jeff said, “We work with allRealtors closely. Sixty to 70-percent ofour customers come through Realtors. They know that Nations Homes isgoing to take great care of their clients.”
Among satisfied clients are GrandeDunes homeowners Andi and JerryCrews, and Ann and Gary Lebsack, who are building in Wild Wing
Plantation. The Crews and Lebsacksdo not know each other, though theycoincidently came to Nations Homes IIin much the same manner. The Crewshad begun the process with anothercustom home builder, and due to a badexperience with a home representativethey quickly walked away. TheLebsacks knew another couple whoalso turned to Nations Homes II afterwalking away from their originalbuilder. In both cases the couples likedwhat they saw in terms of models andvalue. They especially appreciatedfeatures that are standard with NationsHomes II, but would cost extra withother builders.
Andi Crews said they met KevinSurdyke, VP of Sales and Marketing atthe Grande Dunes.”We just kind ofclicked with him. We not only likedwhat we saw in the Nations model, butwe liked what we heard from Kevin.”Andi added, “We just got such a goodfeeling through Kevin, and he wasrepresentative of what Nations Homesstood for.” They built in the Caprisection of Grande Dunes, which theylove for community amenities, thelocation, and the seclusion of their lot.

The Crews built in the Capri section of Grande Dunes. “We not only liked what we saw in the Nations model, but we liked what weheard from Kevin. We just got such a good feeling through Kevin, and he was representative of what Nations Homes stood for. I think they were veryprofessional. They listened to what we wanted, which was extremely important to us,” said Andi.

When asked why others shouldconsider using Nations Homes II astheir builder, Andi said, “I think theywere very professional. They listenedto what we wanted, which wasextremely important to us.” Jerryechoed that and added, “One of thethings I said to all of them is that whenI call you, I want you to call me back. Idon’t care about all the other problemsyou have. And every time I called, theycalled me back.” The greatest joy aboutthe experience was, “Finally getting inhere and enjoying the fruits of ourlabors,” said Andi. Their GrandeDunes home was built in less than 8months. During that time the Crewswere able to compare their experiencewith that of a daughter who wasbuilding with a luxury custom builderin Philadelphia. The experiences werevery different. Their daughter did notget the same standard features from
her builder, “Or the courtesy”interjected Jerry. Kevin Surdyke said,“Our goal is to exceed our customers’expectations at every opportunity.”They met that objective with theCrews. Andi said,”Nations was sowilling to work with us. They wanted usto be happy.”
Listening to and understandingneeds was important to Ann and GaryLebsack as well. They came to knowJoe Lesko through their friends whohad switched builders. Ann said thatJoe spent time with them on the phone(they were living in Nevada) beforemeeting him around Christmas. Annrecalled, “Joe, and even Jeff the owner, spent a lot of time with us, getting toknow what we would like in a house, talking to us about neighborhoods, available lots, and the area.” Garyadded, “Before we even signed acontract they spent time with us, they
were very helpful.” The couple sawsites on satellite and in person, discussed whether the house would sitwell on a lot, and worked through otherdetails with Joe and his colleagues. Annadded, “They gave us their expertopinion on what it’s like to build in thisarea.”
The Lebsacks visited manyneighborhoods and kept going back toWild Wing Plantation. Along the waythey changed their mind on the houseplan after seeing a Nations Home II inPine Lakes, which became their baseplan. The couple has since moved fromLas Vegas, and they broke ground inApril. Ann said, “We’re to the point thata lot is going on all of a sudden, sothings are moving right along.” Theyrecently went to a homeowners’ partyin Wild Wing Plantation where soon-to-be-neighbors asked who wasbuilding their home. Ann said people
Joe Lesko (right), Nations Homes II VP of Sales & Marketing outside Grande Dunes, was very accommodating with new homeowners Gary (far left) & AnnLebsack, who recently relocated to the Myrtle Beach area from Nevada. “Joe, and even Jeff the owner, spent a lot of time with us, getting to know what wewould like in a house, talking to us about neighborhoods, available lots, and the area,” said Ann. Gary added, “Before we even signed a contract, they spenttime with us, they were very helpful.” The Lebsack’s ended up building in Wild Wing Plantation.
responded, “‘Oh, you’ll be happy withit!’ Everybody we talk to is happy withtheir [Nations] home.” The Lebsacksare projected to be in their home inAugust. Beforelong they’ll betaking up golf atthe communitycourse, “That’s on
the bucket list,” Gary said. Nations Home II offers something
else – an additional eight-year warrantyfor homeowners’ peace of mind. Givenall these attributes: experience, services, warranties, referrals andrecommendations, the Nations HomesII team believes they are an obviouschoice among homebuilders. Jeff said,
“We work hard to make sure thathomeowners get the best for theirhard-earned money, and we build whatwe would like to live in.”

As you’re probably aware, our local community recently was named the second-fastest-growing community inthe United States for the second straight year. Add to that the fact that tourism is exploding, with 18 million visitorshaving traveled here in 2015. More tourists and more permanent residents leads to more cars on our roadways. Ifyou’ve driven any major thoroughfare throughout our community in recent months, you’ve undoubtedly witnessedthe congestion this creates.

Jenna and Nick Hudson have theknowledge, energy and enthusiasm to designand install landscapes and outdoor livingspaces. When the Hudsons opened SouthernScapes Landscaping in 2009, Jenna said, “Westarted by selling landscape materials. Ourgoal was always to grow into a garden centerthat would offer things not easily found, and
to be a one-stop shop to meet customers’needs.” Jenna’s background is in teaching andNick’s is in custom-home construction. Thisgives them an innate appreciation for howimportant foundation and framework are tosuccessful outcomes. Plus, Nick has beeninvolved in landscaping since he was ateenager. He was mowing, planting, andtending to landscapes long before starting thebusiness.
Four years after starting the company,Jenna left teaching to devote full-timeattention to the garden center. Full-time forthis couple essentially means 24/7 becausethere’s rarely a moment that the self-described ‘garden geeks’ are not talking aboutthe business and learning about new varietiesof plants and products. Jenna said, “We lovewhat we do; no two days are the same!”
The business has expanded in response tocustomer needs. Jenna said, “Very often
people wanted hardscaping to go with thelandscaping. Rather than subcontracting andtrying to incorporate another business, theirschedule and material, we wanted to givecustomers the finished product that we canstand behind.” Projects, such as walls, walkways and patios led to outdoor fire pits, fireplaces and kitchens. The Southern Scapesteam is always mindful when it comes to“matching a design with a customer, to beable to say, ‘that’s so them,’” Jenna added.
They design four-season landscapes sothere is always something interestingblooming or changing color, and they offeradvice and tips for maintaining a healthyenvironment.
Builders, landscape contractors, andHOAs are among the customers that useSouthern Scapes as a one-stop resource. Some palm trees can weigh up to 1500pounds and it takes special equipment andknow-how to plant them. Customers rely onSouthern Scapes to plant, warranty and

Bryon Fletcher offers the total package inhis product and himself. He’s both creativeand analytical and he brings knowledge, attention to detail, and quality workmanshipto Palmetto Paverstones, Inc. Bryon beganPalmetto Paverstones ten years ago saying, “Isaw it as a new industry and I wanted to dosomething different – get out of the corporateworld and work outside.” His corporate pastas an automotive consultant brought
efficiency and profitability to the service sideof dealerships. Byron said, “I always enjoyeddealing with people and creating a differentway of doing business.” His creative past
included owning a restaurant. Analytical andcreative traits were practically a birthrightcoming from an artistic family and growing upin Toledo, Ohio, where fabrication and fixingwere the crux of daily life.
Bryon said that as few as 10 years agothere was one type of paver used foreverything. The industry has evolved, thoughas Bryon said, “Paverstones are a pre-manufactured concrete block, and there’snothing sexy about it to the average person!”While the basic product might seem dull, thefinished job is a marvel under Bryon’s skillfuldirection.
Bryon keeps apace with productdevelopment, to the point that he still wearshis consultant hat to give R&D feedback to
engineers and producers (affectionatelycalled blockheads). He said, “I take myindustry very seriously; when the productcan’t do what the manufacturers say, that’s thefirst call I make.” Not all pavers are createdequally, and it takes years of experience andapplication to know which ones are better fortheir intended purpose – be it driveways, curved walls or an outdoor kitchen. Anotherdistinction of Palmetto Paverstones, is theircontrary approach. Bryon said, “I always takethe path of most resistance because I want myend product to look the best it can. There’s noright way to do something wrong. That’s whatI preach to my guys; that’s what we all live by.”They can also sleep at night knowing thequality of their work will endure.

company’s custom pools are now beingfinished with quartz plaster, which is a muchharder substance and more stain-resistantthan the traditional marcite (crushed whitemarble.) Salt generators are also being usedto sanitize pool water, eliminating thetraditional chlorine that, as most peopleremember, can fade swimsuits, bleach hair, and lead to red eyes and skin irritation.
The General Pool Company, Inc. offersmore than 100 pool designs and shapes thatcan be customized to meet anyone’s needs.Clients have the opportunity to see two orthree pools incorporated into their designsbefore making their decisions.
Another popular way to truly accentuateyour backyard retreat is with the addition ofone of The General Pool Company’s fantasticoutdoor kitchens, fire places and fire pits. From the beginning of the design process theAshburns will incorporate everything thingyou need to turn your backyard into a trueutopia. If you’re looking for a new amazingpool or looking to change your backyard intoan oasis that you never want to leave, TheGeneral Pool Company, Inc. can make thathappen.
Tommy says many people think theycannot have a pool because of the size andshape of their lots, but most can because
concrete pools can be designed to fit anyspace. “Once they pick out a design, we canstart working on their color choices,” he says, adding that the company produces its ownpool coping colors and considers color one ofthe key aspects of the project.
“Colors are very important because thefour colors you’ll see throughout a pool’s lifeare in the plaster, tile, coping and decking,”Tommy says. “All four colors workingtogether provide a soothing and invitingbackyard retreat.”
