LIVES AT SEA

Hornblower’s Historical ShipmatesThe Young Gentlemen of Pellew’s IndefatigableHEATHER NOEL-SMITH & LORNA M. CAMPBELL The lives of the officers who served on the real HMS Indefatigable, made famous in Forester’s novels.

ɶ The setting for C.S. Forester’s Hornblower novels, HMS Indefatigable was also famous for its action against the French vessel Les Droits de l’Homme

ɶ Details the real men, events and actions behind the stories ɶ A captivating account of men whose lives were often more

colourful than fiction

The book examines the very diverse backgrounds of the seventeen ‘young gentlemen’ who served as midshipmen on Sir Edward Pellew’s famous frigate, considers how he nurtured them into naval leaders, and how they went on to have very colourful lives, both as naval officers, and, after the end of the war in 1815, in other walks of life. The group provides a fascinating snapshot of the later eighteenth-century sailing navy in microcosm. As the historical novelist C. S. Forester placed his hero, Hornblower, on Pellew’s ship as a midshipman, the ‘young gentlemen’ of this book may be considered to be Hornblower’s real-life shipmates. And what lives they led! To list just three, Honourable George Cadogan, son of an earl, survived three courts martial and a duel to retire with honour as an admiral in 1813; Thomas Groube, of a Falmouth merchant family, commanded a fleet of boats which destroyed the Dutch shipping at Batavia in 1806; and James Bray was killed commanding a sloop during the American war of 1812.£25/$45 September 2016978 1 78327 099 610 b/w illus.; 256pp, 23.4 x 15.6, HB

Dictionary of British Naval BattlesJOHN D. GRAINGERAn exhaustive dictionary containing entries on all the battles fought at sea by British fleets and ships since Anglo-Saxon times.

ɶ A uniquely comprehensive account ɶ Unparalleled coverage of a thousand years of battles,

engagements and landings ɶ Full of fascinating details of ships and their commanders

This very substantial, comprehensive dictionary contains entries on all the battles fought at sea by British fleets and ships since Anglo-Saxon times. Major battles, such as Trafalgar or Jutland, minor actions, often convoy and frigate actions, troop landings, bombardments and single ship actions are all covered. Most accounts of British naval power focus on the big battles and the glorious victories; the picture which emerges from the rich detail in this dictionary, however, is of a busy, dispersed navy, almost constantly engaged in small scale activity: taking prizes in the eighteenth century, escorting convoys and being attacked by, and attacking, U-boats in the twentieth century, attacking minor as well as major enemy ports in all periods. Moreover, the action, which very often takes place not in proximity to Britain, but on a world stage, is not always successful and sometimes disastrous. The dictionary covers all periods – medieval, early and late, and early modern as well as modern – and encompasses “Britain” in all its forms – England, Scotland, and British colonies including those in North America. It is an essential reference for all enthusiasts of maritime history.

Will be a very valuable reference work for anyone interested in British naval history or military history in general, providing information of thousands of minor clashes that otherwise would go unnoticed. HISTORYOFWAR .ORG

FORGOTTEN VICTORIES IN FRANCE

Henry of Lancaster’s Expedition to Aquitaine, 1345-1346Military Service and Professionalism in the Hundred Years WarNICHOLAS A. GRIBIT The first full-length account of the victorious but now forgotten campaigns of Henry of Lancaster, one of the greatest men of his generation.

ɶ The largely untold story of major English victories early in the Hundred Years War

ɶ A uniquely detailed look at the officers and men who made up Henry’s army

ɶ Uncovers the realities of life on campaign in the middle ages

In 1345 Henry of Lancaster, earl of Derby led an English royal army to the duchy of Aquitaine and inflicted two devastating defeats on the French royal forces. These were the first decisive victories for either side, and swung the course of the Hundred Years’ War dramatically in England’s favour. This first full study examines the campaigns “in the round”, includes a detailed biographical study of the individuals involved and uncovers the realities of life in a medieval army.£30/$99 June 2016978 1 78327 117 7, e-book 978 1 78204 812 1374pp, 23.4 x 15.6, HBWarfare in History

The Cistercians in the Middle AgesJANET BURTON & JULIE KERR The story of the most successful monastic order of the age and its far-reaching impact.

ɶ How a small breakaway group, committed to a simple life away from the secular world, came to found an Order which became Europe’s greatest, numbering over 700 houses at its peak

ɶ The definitive account, from the Order’s origins to the end of the Middle Ages

ɶ Published in our popular Monastic Orders series ɶ The authors are leading lights in monastic studies

The Cistercians (White Monks) were the most successful monastic order to emerge from the intellectual and religious fervour of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. By around 1150 they had established houses the length and breadth of Western Christendom and were internationally renowned. They sought to return to a simple form of monastic life, as set down in the Rule of St Benedict, and preferred rural locations “far from the haunts of men”. But, as recent research has shown, they were by no means isolated from society but influenced, and were influenced by, the world around them.

A treasure trove of detailed information. CATHOLIC HISTORICAL REVIEW A much needed introduction. [It offers] a detailed and readable account of the Cistercians’ origins and an analysis of the distinctiveness of the medieval Cistercians’ way of life. THE MEDIEVAL REVIEW

WHO WAS HENRy OF LANCASTER?

Henry of Grosmont (c. 1310-1361) was born into one of England’s wealthiest and noblest families, in time becoming 1st Duke of Lancaster, 4th Earl of Leicester and Lancaster, and Earl of Derby. After service in Edward III’s Scottish campaign, Henry was made the King’s lieutenant there. With the outbreak of war in 1337 he undertook military and diplomatic missions in France. His greatest military successes were the victories in Aquitaine in 1345. A cousin and close friend of Edward III, Henry was a founding knight of the king’s Order of the Garter in 1348. Most of the rest of his life was spent on campaign, on crusade or negotiating treaties. At the time of his death he was one of England’s most prominent soldiers and statesmen.

Alehouses and Good Fellowship in Early Modern EnglandMARK HAILWOOD This history of drinking “from below” explores the role of the alehouse in 17th-century England.

ɶ As the traditional English pub continues to disappear, here is the story of how it established its place in society

ɶ A winning blend of social and cultural history ɶ Like the good fellowship it celebrates, it is both complex and fun.

HISTORY TODAY

This book provides a history of the alehouse between the years 1550 and 1700, the period during which it assumed its celebrated role as the key site for public recreation in the villages and market towns of England. In the face of hostility from Church and State, the patrons of alehouses, drawn from across village society, fought for and won a central place in their communities for an institution that they cherished as a vital facilitator of “good fellowship”. For them, sharing a drink in the alehouse was fundamental to the formation of social bonds, to the expression of their identity, and to the definition of communities, allegiances and friendships.£17.99/$29.95 October 2016978 1 78327 154 2, e-book 978 1 78204 725 45 b/w illus.; 266pp, 23.4 x 15.6, PBStudies in Early Modern Cultural, Political and Social History

Britannia and the BearThe Anglo-Russian Intelligence Wars, 1917-1929VICTOR MADEIRA For the first time, the full story of the earliest known Soviet spies in Whitehall.

ɶ A timely study of the struggle to uncover and contain Russian espionage

ɶ Reveals an unseen battle that raged through the interwar years ɶ Published in the successful History of British Intelligence series

For Bolshevik Russia, Great Britain – not America – was the enemy. Now, for the first time, Victor Madeira tells a story that has been hidden away for nearly a century. Britannia and the Bear offers a compelling new narrative about how two great powers of the time did battle, both openly and in the shadows in these critical interwar years and reveals how British Government identified crucial lessons but failed to learn many of them. The book underscores the importance of the first Cold War in understanding the second, as well as the need for historical perspective in interpreting the mind-sets of rival powers.

Excellent . . . a pioneering work [that] should also appeal to anyone interested in modern politics, international relations and, as strange as it may sound, in Russia’s present-day secret intelligence operations in Britain. THE SPECTATOR

Abandoning AmericaLife-stories from early New EnglandSUSAN HARDMAN MOORE The varied, and often touching, stories of the emigrants who left new lives in seventeenth-century America to return home to Britain.

ɶ A unique and touching collection of life stories ɶ Vivid social history ɶ A rare insight into the harsh realities of the earliest American

Dreams

Abandoning America brings together the biographies of hundreds of people who crossed over to New England in the 1630s but braved the Atlantic again to return home. Some went back quickly, disenchanted or discouraged. Many invested everything to make New England a success, yet after ten or twenty years resolved to leave America behind. They reached their decisions in the context of dramatic events in England – civil war, fresh opportunities in Cromwell’s commonwealth – and against a backdrop of personal dilemmas about family ties, health, prospects and profit. The book retrieves their forgotten life-stories from thousands of scattered fragments of evidence in early New England records and British archives. The result of this detective work is a remarkable and evocative collection of personal histories, of people overlooked in the onward march of American history. £19.99/$29.95 October 2016978 1 78327 141 21 b/w illus.; 440pp, 23.4 x 15.6, PB

A NEW MIDDLE CLASS

The New Black Middle Class in South AfricaROGER SOUTHALL Provides the first detailed account since the early 1960s of South Africa’s “black middle class.”

ɶ The new black middle class has become a key signifier of life in post-Apartheid South Africa

ɶ Essential reading for anyone interested in modern South African society

ɶ Roger Southall is a much published and widely acknowledge expert on South Africa

The “rise of the black middle class” is one of the most visible aspects of post-apartheid society in South Africa. Yet while it has been a major actor in the country’s democratic reshaping, analysis of its role has been all but lacking, with the image presented by the media concentrating largely on consumption or corruption. This book provides a much-needed counter-analysis that recounts its historical development prior to 1994 before examining its size, shape and structure, class formation under the ANC, education and black upward social mobility, the black middle class at work, its social life, its political role in the shaping of a democratic society, and its relation to that of its counterparts in the Global South.£25/$45 May 2016978 1 84701 143 5317pp, 23.4 x 15.6, HB

ɶ Offers fresh and interesting details by drawing on a range of interviews with the politician’s contemporaries and personal letters

Julius Kambarage Nyerere (1922-1999), the first President of Tanzania, was a man whose political life was uniquely and inextricably bound into the history of the nation he created. This is the first truly rounded portrait of Nyerere’s early life, from his birth in 1922 until his graduation from Edinburgh University in 1952. Drawing on first-hand interviews, colonial government files and Nyerere’s letters, it allows us to see his later political achievements in a new light; it was after returning to Tanganyika from Edinburgh that “Mwalimu” (the teacher) left teaching, formally entered politics and led efforts to deliver Tanganyika territory to independence.£19.99/$34.95 October 2016978 1 84701 150 3, e-book 978 1 78204 296 916 b/w illus.; 302pp, 23.4 x 15.6, PB
