Great customer relationships bring opportunity

In recent months, Rockwell Collins employees around the world have read countless articles – and heard numerous news stories – about

the deepening global economic crisis.

But as I said in my recent Business Update meetings – in the midst of all we’re facing in both the general economy and in our industry – I have never been more optimistic about the long-term prospects for this company.

Even as we experience historic economic events – and markets that in the near-term continue to be very difficult – we’re developing great customer relationships, winning market share, shaping our company to be competitive in the future, and developing our people.

These actions – along with our passion to win and our ability to work together

– will make us stronger in these difficult times.

A good example of developing a great customer relationship is the Airbus

A350 XWB win featured in this issue of Horizons.

Typically, when you provide good service and attention to your customers, they will reward you with more business. And that’s exactly what happened with Airbus. As a result, when the A350 XWB aircraft family enters service in a few years, more Rockwell Collins systems will be found on these jet airliners than on any previous Airbus platform in history.

The A350 XWB win is just one example of the solid backlog of opportunity that will be an annuity for the future of Rockwell Collins for literally years to come. I hope you enjoy reading more about our growing relationship with Airbus – and our products on this brand new aircraft.

Acquisition of UK-based visual displays company SEOS broadens our simulation and training capabilities

Rockwell Collins image

A new way of workingtogether

By Crystal Hardinger

When you step into the former SEOS facility in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, United

Kingdom, it’s easy to tell that this is the hub for immersive visual display solutions. You can’t help but notice the enormous Panorama displays being assembled. Typically used in helicopter and widebody aircraft simulation, these large-scale systems are between 7 and 11 feet in radius. Not far away, you’ll also see work occurring on the Griffin display system, an egg-shaped dome enclosure that will be used for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter full mission simulator. Key components in this rear-projected display system are the 2015HC Zorro® projectors, which offer unprecedented contrast for commercial airline and military training. Acquired by Rockwell Collins on Nov.

24, 2008, SEOS also boasts research and development labs, darkrooms, high bay areas, system build/test space, office areas and a warehouse. More than 125 employees work in Burgess Hill designing, developing, producing, installing and supporting display technology products for

simulation. In addition, about 15 employees are housed in Newhaven, East Sussex, United Kingdom, and 15 employees are in a new facility in Oviedo, Fla. “What we have in our people is one of the strongest intellectual bases in the [simulation] industry,” said Owen Wynn, who founded SEOS with Stephen Elmer in 1984. “That knowledge allows us to take a number of building blocks we have developed over the years and configure specialist solutions that meet individual customer needs.”

NolongerjustasupplierFor years, companies like FlightSafety International, Lockheed Martin, CAE, Mechtronix Systems Inc., Thales and Rockwell Collins have looked to SEOS for display technology for simulation

> Impressive capabilities – A leader in display technology for simulation, the former SEOS offers innovative products such as the Panorama display system. and training. But now that SEOS is part of the Rockwell Collins family, they’re more than just a supplier. With the acquisition, our company will continue to broaden its simulation and training capabilities to advance training effectiveness and to deliver total training solutions for customers worldwide. “SEOS is the perfect match for Rockwell Collins because they are the undisputed leader in display technology for simulation, and we are the undisputed leader in image generators,” said Nick Gibbs, senior director of Visual Systems for Rockwell Collins Simulation and Training Solutions.

“With every visual opportunity in the marketplace, we now have either a display position or an image generator position.” Prior to the acquisition, senior leaders at Rockwell Collins were considering ways to offer display devices as part of our company’s overall visual systems strategy, and saw potential for an alignment with SEOS. “I’ve been in the industry for more than 22 years, and I’ve known [SEOS founder] Owen Wynn all that time,” said Gibbs. “I just called and asked him if he would be willing to explore having a closer relationship.” Coincidentally, shareowners guiding the strategic direction of SEOS were thinking about selling the company.

“The vast majority of our business goes to the U.S.,” explained Sarah Minett, the former director of sales and marketing for SEOS. “But we were finding that being a UK company mainly working in the U.S. was becoming increasingly difficult. “We also worked with NLX and Evans & Sutherland before they were purchased by Rockwell Collins,” she continued. “What was really refreshing to see was how they thrived once they became a part of Rockwell Collins.”

AgoodfitAccording to Gibbs, before Rockwell Collins even considers obtaining a company, a strong case has to be made that the people, technology and business to be acquired will enhance and enrich our capabilities in the long term. “We truly believe in the strategic

value of having SEOS as part of our company,” said Gibbs, who joined Rockwell Collins in 2006 via the acquisition of Evans & Sutherland’s simulation business. “With their reputation and technology leadership, and our image generator technology leadership, we now have the

ability to really define state-of-the-art solutions in the marketplace.” Since many SEOS employees already know a lot about our company through past working relationships, integrating into the Rockwell Collins family is a little easier. “It’s almost as if we’re dealing with friends,” said Minett. “It’s all familiar faces. It’s just a different way of working together.”

Like many other American contractors producing military hardware during World War II,

Collins Radio Company was under tremendous pressure in 1942 to meet demands. The U.S. Navy needed thousands of Collins transmitters, but numerous men typically charged with making them were serving in the armed forces. In order to meet quotas, the Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based company – known today as Rockwell Collins

– hired its first group of female production workers in February 1942. Among those hired that year was

22-year-old Maxine (Sleight) (Elmore) Milton. “Collins Radio became a lifesaver to me – just a real lifesaver,” said Milton, now 89. “I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity. I really needed a job at the time. I had a 2-year-old son and was recently divorced.” Like millions of other women in the United States who had accepted jobs left vacant by those who had gone away to war, Milton took on a role that

was traditionally held by a man. “I didn’t realize until years later that many women working during the war didn’t have much experience,” said Milton. “But everyone was so polite and so courteous when I started at Collins Radio. The men [who worked with us] were wonderful.” During World War II, newspapers, magazines, radio and other media in the United States portrayed women’s work in wartime industries as a patriotic responsibility instead of a job. Americans were continually reminded

of Rosie the Riveter – a fictional character used in a national campaign to recruit

> Close friends – While working on the assembly line at Collins Radio, both Maxine Milton and Betty Suchan developed a number of friendships and frequently socialized with their co-workers outside of work. Taken at Ellis Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, this 1943 photo includes Maxine Milton (second from the left), her son Dennis (far left), Betty Suchan (third from the left) and two other employees from Collins Radio.

women into the workforce. “I think back to that time and people thought more about their work and how it helped the war effort,” said Betty (Willson) Suchan, who began work on the Collins Radio assembly line following high school graduation in 1942. “We felt like we were contributing in all that we did.”

ExtraordinaryinfluenceWomen working on the assembly line during World War II had a remarkable effect on the early success of our company. Because of their hard work and commitment, Collins Radio was able to fulfill wartime contracts totaling $110 million. In addition, our company earned multiple E-Awards, a prestigious honor given to companies demonstrating excellence in the war effort. According to Rod Blocksome, a principal electrical engineer in Cedar Rapids who also serves as our company’s unofficial historian, it was the women of Collins Radio who were hired for the production line that helped our company keep up. “Our efforts during the war took us from being a small business to being a major player and it couldn’t have been done without all of those women,” said Blocksome. “When the war came along, most men were either drafted or volunteered to serve in the military. This left a huge shortage of workers.” Most of the women employed by our company during World War II worked on the assembly line. Many of them helped produce Collins AN/ART-13

transmitters, a technology credited with saving the lives of Allied pilots. By the time war production reached its peak in 1944, more than half of our company’s assembly workers were women. A short shift – from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. – was adopted for a time to accommodate the schedules of mothers and also to increase production.

Workwasvital, yetenjoyableBut, as serious as their work was, it also

was enjoyable. “I think working at that time was just a

completely different experience,” Milton said. “I remember saying, ‘I love my job so much that I would work here for nothing.’ ” By sharing stories and laughter, the work days passed quickly, and the women grew close. In fact, it’s been more than 60 years since Milton and Suchan worked alongside one another, but the bond they formed back then has transcended time. Suchan, now 84, still resides in Cedar Rapids. Milton remarried in 1946 and moved to California two years later after her husband graduated from The University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. Despite being separated by more than 1,000 miles, the bond the duo formed while building Collins Radio Company equipment still remains. “I met a lot of friends on the assembly line, many of whom I still keep in touch with,” said Suchan. “We’d meet at the park

Mike Tiffany describes Hawker Beechcraft’s King Air 350 airplane, which is equipped

with state-of-the-art technological advancements including the Rockwell Collins Venue™ Cabin Management System, as a high-end home in the sky. Featuring the latest digital high-definition media and entertainment capabilities available at home, Venue was designed to be distinctive in its offerings – opening a whole new world to business aircraft passengers. “It’s been our goal to offer advanced entertainment on small aircraft like the King Air for quite some time,” said Tiffany, director of Business and Regional Systems Advanced Products in Tustin, Calif. “Now, we have the capability and opportunity to do so.” According to Tiffany, Venue is designed to be adaptable to all sizes of business aircraft – from light turboprops to global class jets – all

with a common approach. “It’s very efficient and versatile,” said Tiffany. “It’s also the first high-def system to be introduced into the business jet marketplace, and the first to be selected by an original equipment manufacturer for production line fit.”

GoingtomarketWith the 2002 acquisition of Airshow, Inc., Rockwell Collins gained the ability to equip 12- to 16-seat aircraft and larger with digital cabin technology. However, smaller aircraft – such as the King Air 350 – lacked the necessary architecture and space for advanced cabin capabilities. Realizing this was an untapped and viable market segment, Tiffany and his colleagues added it to their five-year strategic plan in early 2006. The announcement of Venue in September 2007 at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) trade show made the goal

of having a digital infrastructure – communications, lighting and temperature controls and high definition video displays – on a small jet a reality. At NBAA, the Cessna Aircraft Company signed on the new Citation CJ-4 plane as the launch aircraft for Venue.

“After we determined that an opportunity existed, we realized the need to create a system to bring forward the necessary technology to tap that marketplace,” said Chris Jameson, principal engineering manager of Cabin Systems and Architectures. “We then conducted numerous trade studies to determine how best to meet those needs.” According to Jameson, light aircraft have limited room for onboard equipment to be installed. There also

The Venue™ Cabin Management System was designed with adaptability and configurability in mind, allowing Rockwell Collins to move toward one platform regardless of aircraft size.

is very little space to run the cables necessary to deliver high definition video in the traditional manner. However, Venue solves this problem by combining several functions into fewer boxes and distributing high-definition video signals through small, lightweight cables. In addition, a flexible distributed architecture with powerful processors at each seat makes it easy to quickly add innovative features to our Venue System.

FullcabinmanagementVenue’s Media Center allows multiple connections for playing Blu-ray Discs™, DVDs, CD/MP3s, audio and video jukebox, integrated widescreen 3-D digital Airshow® moving maps, photo slideshows and games. There also is a front port USB input for software and media loading. The advanced architecture offered by Venue supports video resolutions up to 1080 pixels, and is fully compatible with new high definition standards such as HDMI™. Consumer devices that use HDMI, including PlayStation® 3 and Xbox 360™ game consoles can easily be connected. The system also enables passengers to plug

in their iPods® for audio and video distribution throughout the cabin, as well as to have full iPod control at their seats. “Venue emulates the home electronics experience with high definition and intuitive user interface to the aircraft cabin,” said Andrew Mohr, director of marketing for Cabin Systems. “We’ve never had a product like this before, but we’ve gotten a lot of good customer feedback. Taking state-of-the-art technology and putting it in cabin management today puts us closer to the cutting edge.”

Tiffany and his team were charged with creating a universal system capable of handling small and eventually large cabin management. In order to equip larger jets, Venue’s highly adaptable and easily configurable architecture was deliberately designed with the future in mind. The second phase of Venue involves developing equipment that accepts more inputs and provides more outputs for larger aircraft such as Bombardier Globals and Dassault Falcon Jets. The same core architecture will be used regardless of the aircraft size. As the project progresses, Tiffany and his team also are investing time, energy and resources to create a variety of tool sets to be able to diagnose problems remotely and make software changes while in flight rather than waiting for the aircraft to land. “We needed to get to the point

where we had a common architecture among all sizes of aircraft, and Venue is that system,” Tiffany said. “Different systems based on plane size are very expensive, but Venue allows us to move toward one platform with a broad acceptance for advanced features and continuous introduction of new capabilities.” <h>

“In the past, we have delivered individual equipment and parts to Airbus,” said Jeff Standerski, vice president and general manager for Air Transport Systems. “On the A350 XWB, we will deliver completely integrated systems.” The win – which is expected to generate about $2.5 billion for our company – means we are now a top-tier

system provider for Airbus, which supplies about half of the world’s jet airliners. Included in the capabilities we will deliver to all three models of the A350 XWB family are the communication, information management, navigation, data network and landing systems. In addition, we will supply the Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer Actuator (THSA). “For the first time, the systems we provide for Airbus will not be airline-selectable,” said Standerski. “Each time a new airline places an order for an Airbus A350 XWB, the aircraft is guaranteed to be equipped with all of the Rockwell Collins systems we have won.” The A350 XWB aircraft family includes the A350-800, which will seat 270 passengers, the A350-900, which will seat 314 passengers, and the A350-1000, which will seat 350 passengers.

The Airbus A350 XWB aircraft family – a system

of highly efficient, long-range, widebody jet

airliners – holds a special allure for Rockwell

Collins employees.

That’s because when these airliners enter service,

they will contain more Rockwell Collins systems than

any previous Airbus platform.

A newleveloftrustThe A350 XWB win demonstrates why great customer relationships are more important than ever.

AtopsupplierAccording to Philippe Brie, vice president of supplier support management for Airbus in Toulouse, France, there are a number of reasons Rockwell Collins has been trusted with such an extensive contract. “Our selection was not based just on technical capabilities, but also on the product – which includes looking at quality, customer support, customer experience and other criteria as well,” said Brie. “We have a long history of working with Rockwell Collins, but never on such a large scale. We expect a lot because of the company’s history in proving their competency.” For more than 20 years, our company has worked with Airbus, providing content for several previous aircraft, including the A320, A330, A340 and A380. Within the last two years, Rockwell Collins has been recognized as the top U.S.-based supplier for Airbus, and their third-best supplier overall. “There is a strong relationship between our companies because of

past work we have done together,” said Brie. “At the end of the day, we all have one common objective – to produce the best aircraft we can.”

For Jen Waterman, a principal program manager at Rockwell Collins, working to supply Airbus with the electric motor control unit (EMCU) component of our company’s THSA represents a great responsibility. “The EMCU contains the high-powered electronics that make the motors spin and the aircraft stabilizer move,” said Waterman. “It’s a critical

component of the pitch control system, and it plays a significant role in the flight controls when landing the aircraft.” The EMCU is just one of many flight-critical products and systems Rockwell Collins employees are working to provide. The A350 XWB development will be broadly executed across several Rockwell Collins locations, including Toulouse, France, Irvine, Calif., Melbourne, Fla., and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “We’re going to be developing a lot of equipment now as we work with Airbus to get this aircraft certified and flying in a few years,” said Jan Timmers, a senior director at Rockwell Collins in Toulouse who oversaw the A350 XWB pursuits. “Airbus is really depending on us.” Rockwell Collins employees at our location in Toulouse – which is about a five-minute walk from Airbus headquarters – are able to work closely with our customer on a daily basis.

Teams of employees based in the U.S. also regularly make trips abroad.

DemonstratingourcapabilitiesWhile working to place our company’s Fly Smart information management system on the A350 XWB, Craig Eilbert interacted with teams of employees in Cedar Rapids and Toulouse, traveling back and forth regularly to understand and meet customer requirements. “We provided four different [Fly Smart] proposals to Airbus,” said Eilbert, a technical project manager in Cedar Rapids. “Even though it was difficult, that was the fun part of the job – regularly interfacing with the customer.” A previous version of the information management system is used on the A340 and the A330, but the design of the A350 XWB is so different from previous jets that many updates had to be made to accommodate this more complex aircraft. According to Eilbert, the pursuit represents one of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of his 20-year career with Rockwell Collins. “It was a challenge to work with such a diverse team, which included members from different cultures who speak different languages,” said Eilbert. “But

that made it even more rewarding to be able to develop a system that is significantly more capable and different from our past work.” Although Rockwell Collins did not win every system we pursued for

the A350 XWB family, our company reached milestones in all of our pursuits, furthering development on many of our systems and placing ourselves in a good position for future work with Airbus and other large original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). “We had a lot of dedicated teams working with Airbus [on the pursuits], which ultimately helped us increase our business with the company three-fold,” said Standerski. “Even in the packages we lost, we really demonstrated our integration capabilities and, most importantly, we built trust.” <h>

This article contains forward-looking statements including statements about the company’s potential A350 XWB revenues. Actual results may differ materially from those projected as a result of certain risks and uncertainties, including but not limited to those detailed from time to time in our earnings press releases and Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

Employees at Rockwell Collins in Melbourne, Fla., are doing their part to inspire the workforce of

tomorrow. In early January, 15 students from the Academy of International Business (AIB) at Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School toured our facility and learned what it’s like to work at our company. “This is the first time we’ve done a tour for students like this,” said Peggy Ritter, senior human resources coordinator in Melbourne. “It went well and we’re looking to reach out to more local high schools in the future.” The AIB students were led through

several production cells (areas where our products are built) by industrial engineers Justin Lauer and James Osborne. Among the cells viewed were those designed for our Very High Frequency (VHF) radio, Adaptive Flight Displays (AFDs) and Just In Time (JIT) boxes. Osborne explained to students that JITs are large containers sent to customers with each piece of equipment needed for the inside of an aircraft. This eliminates the need for several shipping containers and thus makes our delivery process more efficient.

The visit ended with an introduction to “Basic Assembly School,” which is a two-week training course that our new manufacturing employees must pass before beginning work. “I loved giving the tour,” said Osborne. “The students were smart and had great questions. I think these activities are a great way to tap into future talent for our company.” AIB is a new academic program at Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School designed to provide students with the business and financial skills necessary for success in any professional career. <h>

Rockwell Collins employees at the Tullamarine Service Center in Melbourne, Australia, took a

different approach recently to raising awareness and funds for men’s health issues. Sixteen male employees raised $1,150 for men’s health initiatives by seeking donations for leaving their upper lip untouched for one month as part of the Australian-based, international charity event known as “Movember.” Launched in 2004, Movember challenges men to grow mustaches – or “mos” – during the entire month of November. In 2008, an estimated 200,000 men worldwide participated in the event. According to Evan Walters, a service center technician who took part in the fund-raiser, it was surprisingly easy to compile a team willing to grow their own “mos.” “I’d never had a mustache before and neither had many of the other

participants, so it was a lot of fun to see the guys walking around with their new mustaches,” said Walters. Funds from the Movember event are donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and BeyondBlue, a national depression initiative. Each year, 2,900 people die from prostate cancer in Australia, and nearly one in six men suffer from depression. “I know people who have both of the health problems that Movember focuses on,” said Walters. “So, I talked [the fund-

raiser] through with a few other guys and we decided to have a go at it.” Walters said his first order of business on Dec. 1, 2008, was to shave the mustache, but this won’t keep him from bringing Movember back to Rockwell Collins in years to come. “We’ll definitely do this again in the future because it was such good fun and all for such a good cause,” said Walters. “All of the mustaches are gone by now, so it’ll be fun to grow them out again next year.” <h>

M ore than 400 miles lie between the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina and the Rockwell

Collins Service Center in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil, but that didn’t stop our employees from immediately offering assistance to victims of a massive flood. In late November 2008, the equivalent of four months of rain fell in less than one week, saturating the southern Brazilian state, resulting in massive flooding and mudslides. Authorities estimate that one quarter of the state’s population was affected in this natural disaster. About 45,000 people were displaced from their homes, of which 28,000 have suffered a total loss of residence. “We have a small number of employees, but we knew we could help,” said Natanael Filho, manager of the service center. “We only have 13 employees, but our people have

really been taking charge of social responsibility.” According to Filho, our employees donated five boxes of clothing, non-perishable food and toiletry items. He added this effort was not a one-time event. Employees in Sao Jose dos Campos recently established a vision for continuing to make a difference in

the future. “Increasing the help we provide to our community is a big goal this year,” said Filho. “Our employees don’t have to participate but, based on the success of our first effort, I think we’ll be doing a lot more of this in 2009.” <h>

R ockwell Collins employees at our service center in Wichita, Kan., went above and beyond recently

after the Kansas Food Bank expressed the need for additional food. Typically, service center employees hold a food drive twice each year. But an article in a local newspaper indicating a lack of food prompted employees to organize an extra drive, in which they collected 178 items. “The food bank was hit really hard this year,” said Joan Smith, a service center administrator who helped organize the drive. “Employees did very well and donated a lot of items; some even donated cash.” Service Center Technician Robert Duffey, who donated nearly 80 items

alone, said our facility in Wichita makes donating items convenient because of the collection points available throughout the building. “Putting a few cases of canned fruit and veggies into the shopping cart during a regular trip to the store and then bringing them with you to work [for donation] isn’t too difficult,” said Duffey.

“A warm meal might inspire hope and help people become more productive members of society. Helping a neighbor is one way to make a better me.” According to Smith, the Wichita food drives always get great response. She said the next drive is already scheduled for this summer. <h>

After moving to California, Milton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, Master of Fine Arts degree with honors and teaching credentials from California State University at Long Beach. She then taught art for 18 years in the public school system. “Working for Collins Radio Company played such an important role in my life,” said Milton. “It gave me trust in myself and confidence to continue working.” <h>

With 32 employees — the majority of whom are engineers — tackling various design

challenges on a daily basis, it’s no wonder Rockwell Collins in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is viewed as a dynamic place to work. Software Engineer Scott Hasson is the perfect example. He recently spent an entire week in the snow testing radios for the Canadian Research Council while simultaneously programming simulations for hundreds of NATO vehicles communicating in the field. “Things change really quickly around here,” said Hasson, who joined the former IP Unwired about five years ago immediately after his college graduation. “You get a lot of chances to experience different things.” In September 2006, Hasson became part of Rockwell Collins following our acquisition of IP Unwired – a

worldwide provider of advanced digital communications networking technology. “We’re actually running scenarios that Canadian forces are using in Afghanistan,” said Hasson. “It’s challenging work, but we’re able to help them improve their networks, and hopefully make a difference.” In addition to simulation software, our facility in Ottawa also creates wireless networking equipment that extends the life of military radios. “Because of our technology, the performance of the legacy radios — mainly on NATO war ships — is much better,” said Leisa Young, a Human Resources generalist in Ottawa. “They used to have just voice and very limited data, but we provide upgrades that offer Internet and Web applications.”

Products designed in Ottawa and manufactured via an outsourced company in Nova Scotia are sold to military allies around the world.

HoldingresidentinterestWhen they’re not creating innovative technologies, employees at our Canadian facility have multiple opportunities to hold their interest. Located in the suburb of Kanata — within Ottawa, Ontario —

several big-city cultural amenities are available nearby. In addition to being home to professional sports teams and rich in high-tech businesses, Ottawa also is known for its festivals and bountiful green space. “We have hiking trails, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and biking,” said Hasson. “Looking at the whole mix, it makes for a really high quality of life.”<h>
