Boulder Dash nears lthough our com-munity experi-enced a tremen-

dous amount of economic development activity dur-ing 2011, 2012 is already shaping up to exceed last year’s totals. One of the most prominent projects of the year will undoubtedly be the expansion of Metcam — a Forsyth County-based metal fabri-cating company. 

Metcam is a recipient of t h e Ty c o S u p p l i e r Excellence Award and a Gold Level environmental partner with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia.

In the coming months, Metcam plans to move for-ward with the first phase of a 61,000-square-foot expansion that is projected

to generate a minimum of 30 new jobs and approxi-mately $2 million in new capital investment. This expansion serves as the first project in quite some time to utilize resources from such economic devel-opment partners as Lanier Technical College and the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

The next phase of Metcam’s expansion will require that their property be rezoned. The Forsyth C o u n t y B o a r d o f Commissioners will review the rezoning component of Metcam’s expansion proj-ect in the coming weeks.

Expansion project sets tone for 2012 lans are already in place

for the Third Annual Boulder Dash 5K for April

28, 2012. The Healthcare Association of

Forsyth County established this annual event as an opportunity for business and community organi-zations to challenge one another to shed a few pounds and get active. The course will start at Northside Hospital-Forsyth, travel up Ronald Reagan Boulevard and into the Lafarge Quarry. Those planning the event have some great plans for the party at the finish line.

The Boulder Dash is one of only two races run in a working hard-rock quarry in the nation and is one of the most unique courses anywhere in the region.

Last year, there were more than 1,500 participants that showed up to this event. We are expecting to exceed well over 1,500 partici-pants this year and hope that you’ll join us for this fun commu-nity event.

Not a runner? That’s okay! Many participants walk the

course and have a great time. If you’d rather just come enjoy the festivities, the Spring Fling, held at the finish line, will offer up a fun morning.

The Spring Fling in 2011 host-ed over 25 business and communi-ty vendors from Forsyth County. We also enjoyed music, food, priz-es and an awards ceremony.

he Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce and Forsyth County Schools applaud Northside Hospital-Forsyth for its continued sup-

port of the community. The hospital has been a “gold level” support-

er of Forsyth County Schools for many years. The hospital has contributed to the local com-munity in numerous ways including providing financial support for school clinics serving chil-dren enrolled in Forsyth County Schools.

Additionally, the hospital has demonstrated its commitment to our community and the safety of our students by donating defibrilla-tors to ensure potentially life-saving access in the event of a cardiac emergency. The hospi-tal’s ongoing and continued support is evident in the annual battery maintenance of these

valuable pieces of medical equipment. Additionally, the hospital is primarily

responsible for equipping Lambert High School’s wellness and fitness room benefiting all enrolled students.

In addition to health and safety equipment, the hospital also supports the academic and career development of our students.  

For the past two years Northside Forsyth has promoted “The Healthcare Exploring Program” attended by 24 Forsyth County high school stu-dents. The students rotate to various Northside facilities to learn about various medical careers

that they may not previously have considered. The students unanimously agree that it gives them a “jump start” on learning about medical career options that could be afforded to them.

Furthermore, the hospital demonstrates its commitment to exceptionally trained and high-ly qualified educators as well as other individ-uals and entities that support our students by being the title sponsor for the “Celebration of Excellence.”

The Celebration of Excellence is an annual awards banquet recognizing area businesses that participate in the Partners in Education program, Forsyth County Teachers of the Year, individual volunteers (community member mentors) and parent leaders whom are com-mitted to our students’ personal, social, career and academic development.

he Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Kemper will expand its U.S. headquarters here in Forsyth County.

Founded in Germany in 1977, Kemper specializes in developing, manufacturing and distributing exhaust equipment that can be used to enhance safety and environmental protection during welding the pro-cess. Kemper’s innovative technology has allowed them to emerge as a global leader in systematic air purification systems for welding work places. Although Kemper’s clients include such companies as BMW and IBM, Kemper has also partnered with such local manufacturers as Metcam Inc.

Kemper has expanded three times over the past three years. Its current expansion will grow operations by an additional 10,000 square feet.

Kemper projects continued growth as its products gain more exposure in the U.S. market.

he Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office, or FMDE, is in charge of the Camera Ready program, a special

designation given to participating Georgia communities  interested in attracting film and television production.

What does a Camera Ready designation mean? If you represent a production com-pany, you have a helpful liaison in each Camera Ready community ready to assist you with your upcom-ing shoot. If you’re a county representative, you can promote your c o m m u n i t y ’s assets directly to production companies interested in shoot-ing in Georgia.

We are excited to announce that on Feb. 29 at the state Capitol, Forsyth County will be one of 25 new counties inducted into the Camera Ready commu-nity program at a special ceremony as a part of Film Day at the Capitol, celebrat-ing the success the filming industry has already had in the state.

Why be a part of the Camera Ready community?

To provide easier, faster and better access to county production resources and location information through state resources and partnership.

A variety of shooting locations are needed due to a dramatic increase in film and television production across the state,

with Georgia offering tax incentives to production and filming companies.

Local economic impact from produc-tions can be significant, including hiring of local residents, hotel stays and pur-chases of goods and services in the com-munities. Some examples are buying con-

struction materi-als for sets, din-ing in our restau-rants or if the crew wants, to just see a movie while in town for the duration of filming.

W e a r e Camera Ready!

We have des-ignated Anna Taylor Barlow, the chamber’s director of tour-ism, as our coun-

ty representative, and she will handle all incoming requests from production com-panies (as well as inquiries from the state) that are interested in our community.

We have answered all the required questions, loaded photos from the county and city into the library. We have already received several requests for production locations for possible filming in our area, but will be “official” at the end of February and go live on the state Web site.

If you have more interesting photos of the community or questions, please con-tact the chamber. This is an exciting pro-gram that the state is offering and we are excited to be a partner with the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office.

e l l i Cr i ckey has been appointed as the new director of the Master of Business Administration program at

North Georgia College & State University’s Mike Cottrell School of Business.

The two-year, part-time program began in 2008, and the first group of students graduated in 2010.

This fall, North Georgia’s MBA program will move to the new University Center | GA 400 facility in Cumming from its current loca-tion in Cumming City Hall. Crickey said she’s excited about the new location and about helping guide young professionals on their career path.

“I have the privilege of playing a role in people’s lives as they take this step. I know what a life-changer this is, and I can appreciate the pro-cess involved in making that deci-sion,” Crickey said. “I get to talk to people as they are deciding, ‘Is this the right program? Is the right time in my career and in my life?’ We have a great program and it’s nice to talk to people and decide if it is the right one for them.”

Crickey, who came to North Georgia four years ago after spend-ing 14 years with Nordson Corp., had to ask herself those same ques-tions when considering whether to pursue advanced degrees. She cur-rently is pursuing a doctorate in business administration and has an MBA and two bachelor’s degrees in management.

In addition to her role as MBA

director, Crickey is an instructor in the Mike Cottrel l School of Business, teaching undergraduate courses in international business, operations management and busi-ness management. She encourages her undergraduate students to work in the business world for a few years before pursuing advanced degrees.

The MBA program is based on a cohort structure, which means that a group of students is accepted into the program each fall and progresses through the program as a group. Students take two classes each semester, and classes are held on the same nights throughout the two y e a r s o f t h e p r o g r a m . Congratulations to Kelli Crickey.
