Born Into Brothels wins the 2004 Academy Award for Best Documentary, exposing the world to the tragic s i tuat ion for chi ldren in Calcutta ’s red-l ight distr ic t . The filmmakers envis ion bui lding a safe home where young gir ls f rom the neighborhood can grow into healthy, independent women.
HOPE HOUSE : STAGE 1
Working with Kids With Dest iny, and i ts parent company Head First Development, a beaut i ful property is purchased on the outskir ts of Calcutta. This begins the process of organiz ing local leadership, obtaining permits, working with neighborhood officials , and designing the bui lding.

While the chal lenging road to construct ion is underway, emphasis is placed on forming good relat ionships and a qual i ty reputat ion within the red-l ight neighborhood, without which the Hope House would not be possible. To this end, a Mercy Cl inic provides free healthcare to the community and a smal l laundromat business is opened to offer safe employment to women.
