The Academy is a wonderful place to learn, offering brand newworld class learning environments with purpose built facilities forSixth Form students.

Our Sixth Form is a totally new provision for young people in thearea offering a wide range of subjects including A Levels, BTECs,NVQs and GCSEs.

Here at Hope Academy Sixth Form we are committed to academicexcellence where every student will meet their potential. Hope Academy is a joint Catholic & Church of England community, sponsored by bothChurches and Liverpool Hope University. We welcome young people from all faithbackgrounds or none. The Academy provides brand new Sixth Formprovision for the young people ofNewton-le-Willows and surrounding areas. It is notjust a new name for an existing school but is theresult of a £33 million investment.

Support & Guidance

Induction ConferenceWe offer all new students to our Sixth Form aninduction conference. In addition to having a greattime, you will be introduced to the Sixth Formexperience and allowed time to get to know eachother and your tutors. It will make you aware of theexpectations in Sixth Form and allow you to begin torecognise your strengths and set targets for yoursubjects.

The conference will begin the process of makingyou aware of Higher Education options and themany ways in which you can get involved in SixthForm life.

Career Guidance Helping you make the right choice foryour future.There will be a full programme of career guidance inpartnership with the Connexions service. This willinclude advice on careers, progression to universityor gap years, helping you make the right choice foryour future. It will also include access to HigherEducation conferences and support in visiting arange of Higher Education institutions.

Personal TutorWhen you come to Hope Academy Sixth Form yourpersonal tutor will help you settle in and support youthrough your time here.

Your tutor will undertake regular reviews of yourprogress against the subject targets you have beenset. In addition they will support you with study skillsand offer advice on career progression.

Personal Development and Enrichment…It’s not all work!We will expect all our students to work hard and be committed to their learning. However we firmlybelieve that Sixth Form should be a time when you havegreat fun, get involved and develop as a person.

Here at Hope Academy Sixth Form there will be lotsof opportunities to get involved. This will include Sixth Form councils and social committees, Duke of Edinburgh Award, music and drama productions,sport, community service, charitable work and a wide range of outings including trips abroad.

Sixth Form Student Council.At Hope Academy, we want you to be able tocontribute to the success and future development ofthe Sixth Form. The Sixth Form Student Councilprovides a way of representing your views and ideasat Sixth Form and Academy level. In addition, thecouncil will be responsible for the organisation ofenrichment opportunities including charity events andsporting activities. You can apply for a position on thestudent council (although numbers are limited) andyou will be given more information about this whenyou start at Hope Academy. You may prefer to be atutor group representative, reporting issues and ideasdiscussed during form time back to the studentcouncil. Whatever your role, we want to encourageyou to get fully involved in Sixth Form life.

Getting Involved...

Study SupportWe want you to feel valued in Hope Academy SixthForm and the staff working with you will make surethat support for your studies is available when youneed it. In addition to your Form Tutor, your subjectteachers will provide you with study skills advicethat is specific to the courses that you arefollowing. We also have Achievement Mentors inthe Academy who can give extra support whennecessary. There will be study skills sessionsduring your induction and on other occasionswhere possible throughout the year

Additional SupportHope Academy Sixth Form is committed toeducational inclusion and welcomes students withlearning difficulties or who are disabled.

We can support you if you have additional healthor learning needs and will do our best to makesure that you are able to make the most of your lifein the Sixth Form. We can arrange for you to haveextra time in examinations if necessary. The levelof support will depend upon your individualrequirements and you may discuss this onenrolment day with experienced Sixth Form staff.

Financial Support.From September 2011, if you need some financialsupport to stay in education, you can apply for thenew 16-19 Bursary Fund.

Programme of study Entry Requirements

At least 5 Cs atGCSE Level 2BTEC may beneeded toprogress to aLevel 3 BTEC inthe same subject.

Mainly Ds withsome Es at GCSE

Mainly A*s and A’s at GCSE

FoundationThis is a one year programme in which you can opt for 2 Level 2BTEC courses. You will also study Work Skills and resit courses forGCSE English and Mathematics are also available. When youhave completed the year successfully, you can progress to Level 3courses.

AdvancedOur Advanced programme allows you to select from a wide rangeof traditional Advanced Level subjects such as Geography, Physicsand English. Psychology, Sociology and Law may be less familiarand offer the opportunity to study a new subject. In addition to ALevel subjects, we offer a variety of Vocational Level 3 BTECNational courses such as Applied Science, Sports Studies andMedia. You are usually expected to take 4 subjects at AS Level orthe equivalent in your first year. In year 2 most students studyingA Levels will reduce the number to 3. If you succeed, you will be able to progress to University, furthertraining or employment.

HonoursIf you have achieved very high grades in your GCSE subjects youmay want to opt for 5 AS Level subjects, you may also have theopportunity to complete an Extended Project. This shows a highlevel of commitment to study and increases UCAS points forUniversity entry.

General Studies and Critical Thinking add furtherbreadth to the provision offered at Level 3 and youwill all study Ethics as part of your Sixth Formcurriculum.

Please note that some subjects have specificentrance requirements and you will be providedwith individual guidance on enrolment day toensure that you opt for the most appropriatecourses. You can refer to the individual courseinformation sheets to help your course choice.

You will follow a programme of study that is suitedto your ability, preferred learning style and futureaspirations. We feel that it is very important thatyou progress onto courses that you will enjoy andin which you will succeed. The courses that youchoose will depend on your GCSE results and yourown personal choice and aspiration.

• Start thinking about the subjects youmight want to study and speak to yoursubject teachers and Connexions Adviser fortheir advice.

• Apply to become a Sixth Form student atHope Academy in one of three ways:

1. Completing the online application form onthe Hope Academy website

2. Filling in a paper copy of the applicationform and handing it in to your Head ofHouse

3. Posting a copy of the application form toHope Academy Sixth Form at theaddress below

You should apply as soon as possible but nolater than FRIDAY 16th DECEMBER 2011.

Autumn 2011 - Spring 2012

We will consider your application form alongwith the information we receive from yourschool. You will then have an informalinterview to discuss:

• your initial choice of subjects and the entry requirements for these

• your progression routes and career options.

If you are offered a place you will be asked toconfirm your acceptance.

August 2012

• After publication of the GCSE results you can enrol on your courses at the Sixth Form.

September 2012

• Start your first few days at Hope Academy Sixth Form on an induction programme to ensure you settle into Academy life quickly and easily.
