Our sixth form is a totally new provision for young people in the areaoffering a wide range of subjects including A’ levels, BTECs, NVQs andGCSEs.

Residential ConferenceWe offer all new students to our sixth form aresidential induction conference. In addition tohaving a great time, students will be introduced tothe sixth form experience and allowed time to get toknow each other and their tutors. It will makestudents aware of the expectations in sixth form andallow them to begin to recognise their strengths andset targets for their subjects.

The conference will begin the process of makingstudents aware of Higher Education options and themany ways in which they can get involved in sixthform life.

Personal TutorWhen you come to Hope Academy Sixth Form yourpersonal tutor will help you settle in and support youthrough your time here.

Your tutor will undertake regular reviews of yourprogress against the subject targets you have beenset. In addition they will support you with study skillsand offer advice on career progression.

Career GuidanceHelping you make the right choice foryour future.There will be a full programme of career guidance inpartnership with Connexions service. This willinclude advice on careers, progression to universityor gap years, helping you make the right choice foryour future. It will also include access to HigherEducation conferences and support in visiting arange of Higher Education institutions.

Personal Developmentand Enrichment…It’s not all work!We will expect all our students to work hard andbe committed to their learning. However we firmlybelieve that sixth form should be a time when you havegreat fun, get involved and develop as a person.

Here at Hope Academy Sixth Form there will be lotsof opportunities to get involved. This will includesixth form councils and social committees, Dukeof Edinburgh Award, music and drama productions,sport, community service, charitable work anda wide range of outings including trips abroad.

Level 3 CoursesAdvanced Level CoursesWe offer a wide range of Advanced Level coursesranging from traditional A Levels such as Geography,Physics and English to subjects you may be lessfamiliar with such as Psychology, Sociology and Law.

A Level courses are split into two halves (AS Leveland A2 Level). AS Level is a qualification in its ownright but you must pass both AS Level and A2 inorder to achieve a full A Level.

It will be normal for students to follow four AS Levelsin their first year (although some may follow five).In year two most students reduce the number ofacademic subjects to three A2 Levels. In additionstudents will be able to follow General Studies,Critical Thinking or undertake an AS extendedproject.

Advanced Vocational CoursesIn addition to the traditional A Level students mayfollow a range of Advanced Vocational courses suchas BTEC Nationals.

We offer a good range of BTEC National courses insubjects such as Business, Performing Arts and ICT.

Level 2 CoursesThese are one year programmes offered to studentswho wish to continue their education with theprospect of gaining access to Level 3 courses. Inaddition we will offer a resit programme inMathematics and English.

Support & GuidanceEntry RequirementsWhich course is best for me?We feel it is very important that each studentprogresses onto courses that they will enjoy and inwhich they will succeed. The courses that youchoose will depend on your GCSE results and yourown personal choice and aspiration.

The table below details Hope Academy Sixth Form’sstandard entry requirements.

Please note that we always strive to take individualpersonal circumstances into account.

Level of Course GCSE grades required

AS and A Level At least 3 Cs and two Bs

BTEC Diploma At Least 5 Cs

BTEC First Diploma Mainly Ds with some Es

Students following vocational programmes (e.g.BTEC First) in Year 11 should achieve a pass gradein the subject to progress onto a Level 3 course inthe same subject.

read the prospectus and visit our website.

• Start thinking about the subjects you

might want to study and speak to your

subject teachers and Connexions Adviser

for their advice.

• Apply to the Sixth Form in one of these

three ways:

If you attend St Aelreds or Newton High,

you can pass it to your Year Head.

We will consider your application form along

with the information we receive from your

school. You will then have an informal

requirements for these

• your progression routes and career

options.

If you are offered a place you will be asked to

confirm your acceptance.

August 2011

• After publication of the GCSE results you

can enrol on your courses at the Sixth

Form.

September 2011

• Start your first few days at Hope Academy

Sixth Form on an induction programme to

ensure you settle into Academy life quickly
