What is Hootsuite?• Hootsuite is a social media management tool that makes it easy and less

time-consuming to manage your brand/personal social media accounts. • All posting and commenting is done from a single dashboard, on your

laptop, mobile or tablet. This is organized by using tabs and streams connected to your social media channels.

• Hootsuite has the capability to post and manage your Facebook personal account, Facebook page, Twitter account, Google Plus page, LinkedIn profile, LinkedIn company page and also your Instagram profile.

Hootsuite jargon busterFeature Explanation

Tabs You can organise your dashboard into main tabs, like using a navigation bar on a website. They are customisable and you can create as many as you need.

Streams Within a tab, you can create 10 streams. A stream consists of information drawn in from your connected social media accounts. For example, you can create a stream that displays the tweets that @mention your Twitter account. Or you could use a stream to display messages sent to your Facebook page. There are lots of different stream types you can add, for example mentions, lists, keyword searches to name just a few.

Publisher The publisher tab will allow you to view what social updates you have scheduled or upload your own social updates.

Teams With Hootsuite Pro, you can become a Member of a Team, which gives you access and permission to post and view other Hootsuite users’ dashboards. You can post on their behalf too.

Getting started: add a tab• Create a Twitter tab• Click the My First Tab title to make this the

active area• Click My First Tab and type Twitter as the

new tab name - press ENTER.• To add additional tabs:• Click the plus (Add Tab) icon. • Type tab name, (in this case type Facebook)

and then press ENTER • The new tab is now ready to use • You now have your Facebook and Twitter tabs

created

Setting up hashtag searches• Near the top left of your Hootsuite

Dashboard is the option to +Add Stream.

• A window will appear and you should select the ‘Search’ option.

• Be sure to also select the appropriate social channel you wish to search.

• Add your town (or another keyword) with or without a hashtag. Or do an advanced search to catch both.

• Now click Add Stream to see all of the tweets with that keyword or hashtag displayed in your Dashboard.

Keyword searches• One of Hootsuite’s strengths is it’s

capabilities to search Twitter. You can search for tweets and users tweeting based on some simple Boolean search criteria. Take a few minutes to visit the link below.

Opportunity spotter• Hootsuite has such good search capabilities, you can search for highly

specific tweets or social updates and find sales opportunities for your business. If you sell healthy snack bars, you could search for tweets from people saying things like:

“I wish there was a healthier snack bar on the market”• To find tweets like this, you could search Hootsuite for:

“I want” OR “wish” OR “would love” OR “like” AND “healthy snack bar” OR “healthier snack bar” lang:en

• Make sure you use a “lang:” search, this will narrow down the results to only ones written in your language. The “en” stands for English, the only

language I want to find in my search here.

Setting up an opportunity spotter• Add a new tab – click the plus sign shown

in the screenshot on your Hootsuite navigation bar and name it.

• Click the Add Stream button. • Now ensure Twitter is set as the social

network.• Click Search to start to create your search.

Scheduling an update• To create your message click the text box in the top left-hand corner of your

Hootsuite screen. If you have a link to share then place it in the Add Link box. As you do a “Shrink” button will appear. Click the icon

• Select the social media channels you wish to send from. Click send now when finished

Scheduling updates automatically• Follow the same process as composing a new social update. However,

instead of clicking ‘Send Now’ you should click the little calendar icon above the ‘Send Now’s button.

• Click to choose your day and time, Tick the box to email you when the message is sent (optional) and Select schedule.

Engaging with mentions• When you mouse over any of the search

results a row of icons next to the person’s name will appear. You will be able to (in this order)

1. Reply2. Retweet3. Direct message

• You can also click the down arrow for:1. Reply All2. Favourite3. Send to Email 4. Send to Conversation
