A couple of weeks ago we featured Elaine and EricaYoder, the two Kalona sisters who are following theirdreams and starting an event planning business.Last week, it was jewelry designer Kelli Weber. She

too has chosen to turn a passion intoa business.

These ladies and hundreds of other EasternIowans deserve our applause forembarking on the intimidating journeyof owning their own business. And forthat same reason. They also deserve oursupport.

One of the criticisms of Cedar Rapids (butnot so much Iowa City), is that we are thechain capital of the world. I won’t denythat that’s true. And while it’s hasty todismiss those businesses entirely — they areafter all employing local people — it is also

true though that locally-owned establishmentsare what make a community unique.

And both Cedar Rapids and Iowa City have plentyof local restaurants, bars and boutiques to support.

Don’t believe me? Search our archives. Hoopla makesa point to feature only locally owned restaurants

and bars in BehindTheBar, InTheKitchen and Clean PlateClub. This issue marks our 31st this year and we haven’texhausted our options yet.

And what about places to shop? There are plenty ofoptions on that count too. So many that insteadof answering the InCircle question, I decided todevote this entire column to the topic.

I was inspired to ask this week’s question for a coupleof reasons. One is Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of

Commerce’s Buy In program, which they were promotingat the last Downtown Farmer’s Market. I wasn’t sure what itwas. So I Googled.

Turns out it’s an initiative by the chamber to get localbusinesses to pledge to shift 5 percent of their current out-of-area purchases back to Linn County. Doing so, they say, will capture $400 million currently lost to the county, thuscreating 2,300 jobs.

Makes sense right? But it’s not just businesses that canpledge to buy local.

We can too.

The gal you see on the cover sure would like you to. JillHanna makes it her business to support other businessesas the president of the Marion Chamber of Commerce. She’spictured in downtown Marion, one of my favorite places inthe area, which features several great places to shop.

I could spend hours (and have) at several of the downtownshops, like Weeping Willow, Campbell Steele Gallery, chocolate temptations fine candies, Joy Boutique andDreaming Bear. All these options, within less than one blockof Marion. See why I couldn’t pick just one? Not with thewhole Corridor to choose from.

So. Am I asking you to give up on chain stores entirely? No.That wouldn’t be very practical.

But consider the Buy In program. Can you pledge fivepercent? If you spend $100 a month on clothes, home decoror gifts, that’s just $5. Sounds reasonable to me.

Jill Hanna is living proof of Marion’s slogan: “You can go home again.”

After attending the University of Iowa and working as a store director for Targetfor 10 years, Jill returned to her hometown in 2007 to take her current positionwith the Marion Chamber of Commerce and be closer to family.

One of the first things Jill noticed was that Marion hadn’t really changed muchover the last 30 years. While some may appreciate this for its nostalgia, Jill wasconcerned that Marion wasn’t keeping up with surrounding communities.

“I have a lot of passion for Marion as a community,” Jill says.

Compared to towns like Hiawatha, North Liberty and Coralville, Marion hassome catching up to do, she says.

Enter Imagine8. A grass-roots effort, Imagine8 is a community visioning processlaunched in January to answer the question “Where do we go from here?” anddevelop eight ideas to enhance Marion as a better place to live, work and play.

Jill emphasizes the importance of this vision involving the whole community.

“It can’t just be six or seven people,” she says. “It has to come from everyone.”

In August committees will begin to come up with strategies and funding plansto make each of these eight ideas become a reality.

Each of the eight selected ideas focuses on a way to make Marion a morefunctional and fun place to live.

For example, “Marion CAN!” (CAN stands for Community Activation Network) isaimed at helping both new and existing citizens connect with the community.

“I really like it because it has so many different components,” Jill says. Thesepieces include a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities, new signage toaccent sites of historical significance and a tool kit to aid residents in planningcommunity events like block parties or garage sales.

Another idea, “Park it,” could involve partially enclosing the depot in the CityPark.

“We have four seasons here and the winter one seems to last a long time,”Jill says.

The enclosed portion of the depot would serve as a multiuse space for events, performing arts and a welcome center. Building an amphitheater and expandinggreen space are also part of the “Park it” idea.

Though she’s passionate about Imagine8, Jill’s job involves a lot more.

“It’s different every day,” she says. “Everything we do is kind of made fromscratch.”

Jill says she uses a lot of what she learned about management at Target toassist Marion’s small business owners, which account for 95 percent of Marion’sbusinesses, and other chamber members.

One of her favorite job perks?

“It gives me an excuse to shop,” says Jill. The stores in uptown Marion are great, she says. “And I’m supporting our membership.”

DID YOU KNOW?If Jill isn’t working she’s spending time with her family. She and her husbandhave four children and they enjoy having extended family in Marion as well.

WHAT SHE CAN DO FOR YOU:Want to get involved in Imagine8 or just know where to go and what to do inMarion? Jill is your connection for all things Marion.

HAVE A RESTAURANTSUGGESTION?

E-MAIL:[email protected]

ONLINE:WWW.HOOPLANOW.COM

I love being surprised by restaurants.

It had been awhile since I’d been down Edgewood Road.I knew there was lots of construction going on over thelast few years, including a giant Hy-Vee and a strip mallwith a couple new restaurants, but I was completelysurprised by one of the more recent additions Jiamen.

Jiamen takes over a large area near the corner of BlairsFerry and Edgewood Roads in Cedar Rapids. The exterioris polished and chic. I got a definite P.F. Chang’s vibe, the chain of upscale Chinese restaurants. It’s one of myfavorites!

Jiamen’s décor may be similar, but their menu is original. They go beyond traditional stir-fry dishes and offermeat and potato favorites with an Asian flare. Americanstandards such as duck breast and porterhouse steaksare taken to a new level with flavors such as Asian pearand honey ginger.

I visited over lunch and was pleased to see most of the

dinner dishes offered in a lunch-size portion. To start mymeal I ordered Steamed Crab Rolls, a mixture of snowcrab, blue crab, tomato, mint, cilantro and lime juicewrapped in rice paper and served with mango ketchup. The rice paper made the rolls appear as unassumingblobs. But once I cut into it I discovered a sensation ofcool crab, with a bit of crunch and loads of flavor.

My entree was Wok-Fired Diced Chicken with HoneyChili Sauce, a roasted pepper encrusted chicken breastserved with brown rice in a light soy honey lemon sauce. The true test of a good Asian restaurant is its brown rice.Jiamen’s rice was very lovely, fluffy with a nice nuttiness. The chicken was tender little nuggets of white meat, sautéed and coated with a sweet and spicy sauce.

Jiamen has brought an upscale vibe to a formerly low-key corner of town. I look forward to coming back duringdinner hours when I can kick back and enjoy a cocktailand some company.

{BEHINDthebar New bar on the block.

RYAN TAYLOR PHOTOS

White Caucasian

It’s my own secret recipe.A unique spin to theWhite Russian. That’s allthe detail I can give, youhave to come check it outyourself.

How long have you been spinningthe bottle? My parents owned a bar growing up, so I was behind a bar beforeI could see over one. I’ve learned a lot over the years. Officially I’vebeen bartending for six years now. I’ve been with Teeghan’s since theyoriginally opened in January 2008.

Tell me about Teeghan’s new locationalong Second Avenue. Our new spot is prime location. We couldn’t have found a betterplace downtown. There are several other spots right around us, sowe’re literally placed in the middle of all the action. From a crowdperspective we’ve already passed our highest numbers pre-flood, andit just keeps getting better.

How do you explain the success? It’s all about the feel of the bar. The place is laid back, safe, but withlots to keep you entertained.

What’s your take on the downtownnight life scene post-flood?I’ve traveled all over and been to many downtowns, and Cedar RapidsDowntown is my favorite. It’s all about the people and their attitude. Here everyone is so welcoming. I’m very proud we’ve all managed toaccomplish so much in the past year. Spirits are up and we’re makingdowntown a fun place to be.

What’s a common bartender faux pas.One of the biggest mistakes is overpouring ingredients in your mixeddrinks. A good rule of thumb from the Teeghan’s “mixologists” is totake a one ounce shot glass and let that be your guide. It helps evenout the amount of shots within a drink.

BOOKTALK { Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you theCliffs Notes. What they are reading right now andwhich books they can’t wait to crack open.

Thank goodness. My good friend MyronBolitar is back. In the ninth book in theMyron Bolitar series, “LONG LOST,”Harlan Coben brings us the samesnippy and sarcastic Bolitar we’vecome to know and love.

One of my favorite literary characters,Myron Bolitar isthe main characterin Coben’s series. He is a sports andentertainment agentand one of themost colorful andlikable charactersI’ve encountered. No matter howdespicable Myron’s actions (beatingsome guy to a pulp is a good example),I still end up wanting to take the guyout for a drink.

For those of you who have yet tohave the pleasure of reading a MyronBolitar book, Myron was on the vergeof becoming a great professionalbasketball player when a knee injuryblew his dream to shreds. After astint as an investigator, Myron tookup a career as an agent. He oftenfinds himself in rather troublesomesituations. His clients seem to attractdrama, and Myron’s responses alwaystend to make the situation worse.

In “LONG LOST” (don’t worry, youdon’t have to have read the first eightto enjoy No. 9), Myron is surroundedby the usual host of colorful, exuberant and verbose friends. Afterreceiving an unexpected call froman old girlfriend whom he hasn’theard from in seven years, Myronfinds himself on his way to France tocomfort her when her ex-husbandmysteriously goes missing. Quickly,Myron finds himself in the middle ofyet another scandal; only this time, itinvolves the world of terrorism. Let the

drama begin.

As with Coben’s other novels, “LONGLOST” does not disappoint. It is nota challenging book; definitely mindcandy, which makes it a perfect bookfor your relaxing summer vacation.

If you are not into over-the-topsarcasm or want to try something alittle different, pick up “BLONDE” byJoyce Carol Oates, in which Oatestackles the rise and fall of NormaJeane Baker (aka Marilyn Monroe).

One of the many things that sets“BLONDE” apart from the typicalcelebrity biography is Oates’ approachto the story. She gets into the head ofNorma Jeane to reveal what Norma isthinking and feeling throughout hershort yet iconic life.

I am halfway through the book (at700-plus pages, it may take me a

while) and havealready learneda lot, mostnotably how lostNorma JeaneBaker really was.Oates describesNorma Jeane asa genius because“Norma didn’thave a clue whoshe was, and she

had to fill this emptiness in her. Eachtime she went out, she had to inventher soul. Other people, we’re just asempty; maybe in fact everybody’s soulis empty, but Norma was the one toknow it.” This is a great book; partnovel, part biography, part mystery. Achallenge, yes, but here’s to hoping itis worth it.

Acoustic DJ’z is a Cedar Rapids-based duo comprised oftwo familiar faces in the local music scene. The D in DJ’zstands for Destery Hildenbrand, lead singer of local punkrock cover band Pretend Rockstar. The J stands for JakeThein, one of two guitar players in Pretend Rockstar.Destery and Jake met in 1998 when they workedtogether at a popular club in Cedar Rapids whereDestery was a bartender and Jake worked security.

“A few co-workers and I had formed a band so we had

asked Destery to join us as the lead singer. He accepted,so we’ve both been performing in bands together offand on ever since,” Jake says. “We’ve always just kindof clicked whether it be writing and recording originalmusic or singing vocal harmonies. Everything just seemsto fall together.”

Acoustic DJ’z started when a friend of asked Desteryand Jake if they would play an acoustic show for herbirthday party.

“Both of us really enjoy playing songs where we canspotlight our vocal harmonies. That’s our forte, somemight say,” Jake says.

As Acoustic DJ’z, Jake and Destery make up an acousticduo. They both play guitar and take turns on the vocals, creating a sound that can make any night pass a littlefaster, with familiar songs from artists such as TheCalling, Four Non-Blondes, Linkin Park and Bon Jovi andoriginals.
