Hey there Hoopla Hawk fans!

It feels good to be talking and thinking about a bowl game once again. The holidays were

not very fun last year without a Hawkeye bowl game. The season

didn’t look great after starting 3-3, but Coach Ferentz and team pulled

together with reward being a New Year’s Day bowl game. And wasn’t

that Penn State game fun?

And how about Shonn Greene this year? The running back position was questionable going into the year and out comes this year’s best running back and Doak Walker recipient. Here is hoping Shonn has one more 100+ yard game in him. And how about he stick around for another yearas well?!

Mitch King and Matt Kroul have been my personal favorites this year. These two guys have incredible work ethics and are great leaders. Being a Cornell College grad and having lived and spent time in Mount

Vernon, it’s hard not to root for Matt. What his family went through this past

summer with the flooding makes one want to root that much harder.

Even though I am a super fan, I am not making the bumblebee trek to Tampa this year. Not smart on my part since I know the weather will be wonderful in Florida compared to Iowa. So, I will be using some great recipe ideas from the Hoopla pages and throwing a grand Hawkeye party.

Hope everyone enjoys the game and the Hawks end the year at 9-4. And it would be super if the Big Ten could finish above .500 in their seven bowl games, but don’t count on it. The matchups don’t look favorable, but the Iowa/South Carolina matchup does look like a good one.

The Outback Bowl is once again the first bowl game of the year with a 10 a.m. kickoff so please plan accordingly. Also, don’t forget to check out www.hawkeyebowlgame.com for all of your Outback Bowl coverage before and after the Hawkeye victory.

intheKNOW { All the news you didn’t know you needed to know.

ThE GAzETTE Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi celebrates with fans after his team’s 24-23 victory over No. 3 Penn State November 8.

The Hawks ended the 2008 regular season with an 8-4 record and are headed to the Outback Bowl this week. In case you were living under rock, don’t care about football but want to look smart at the bowl party or drank too much beer during the season, here’s a refresher:

Northwestern beats Iowa, 22-17Yes, the Iowa coach has some questions about the of-fensive pass interference call that axed Iowa’s penultimate drive in the 22-17 loss to Northwestern.

hawks beat Indiana, 45-9Shonn Greene gutted out 115 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries after an ankle injury on his second attempt, and Hampton, playing in his home state, took over in the second half with 114 yards and three touchdowns to spur Iowa’s 45-9 victory.

Narrow victory over BoilermakersWith five seconds left, Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter launched the Boilermakers’ last chance. Iowa linebacker Pat Angerer didn’t see it. He was too busy hitting Painter and worrying about a late-hit penalty.

Tough defeat at IllinoisMinus-1. Field goal. Sack, incomplete, 9-yard pass on third-and-19. Field goal. That was Iowa’s day. That was pretty much the game.

Greene Day: hawks beat BadgersThe junior running back rushed for 217 yards and four touchdowns in Iowa’s 38-16 bludgeoning before 70,585 fans Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

hawks take down Penn StateDaniel Murray’s 31-yard field goal with one second left was good. The Hawkeyes’ thrilling 24-23 victory over No. 3 Penn State was really good. The feeling of 70,585 fans jumping down on top of you to celebrate the program’s biggest victory in years, yeah, even that felt good.

hawkeyes rout Minnesota in finaleRunning back Shonn Greene rushed 22 times for 144 yards, breaking Iowa’s season rushing record. He broke the mark in style, spinning away from a pair of Minnesota defenders for a 15-yard touchdown, his second of the game, for a 41-0 lead with 4:58 in the third quarter.

Iowa runs wild against MaineIn the second quarter, Iowa linebacker A.J. Edds trailed Maine quarterback Adam Farkes in his own end zone, forc-ing him into intentional grounding and a safety. That gave Iowa a 16-0 lead and effectively ended the game.

Florida International down 42-0Iowa wide receivers accounted for 10 catches and three touchdowns in a 42-0 victory Saturday over Florida International. There was one drop, from Jake Christensen to wide receiver Paul Chaney, but the judges also could’ve ruled that a miss.

hawkeyes beat CyclonesThe Iowa Hawkeyes ran off the final 10 seconds and ran off with the Cy-Hawk, 17-5, before 70,585 fans Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

Offense fails in loss to PittIowa’s offense, defense and special teams failed to rise to the occasion during several key plays in Saturday’s 21-20 loss Saturday at Pittsburgh.

16-13 loss at Michigan StateKirk Ferentz called his team the “all-Santa Team.” He said the United Way and Santa Claus would be very proud of the Hawkeyes for their selfless giving.

3THINGSNot sure where to watch the Game?CheCk out one, two or all three of these options and have a good time.

one{ }at the Bar

surround yourself with dozens (or hundreds) of other hawkeye fans at one of the area’s numerous drinking establishments. why? well, you’ll have someone to high five when the hawkeyes do well. and some drink specials, like $5 bottomless cups, are cheaper that buying even a case of natty light. plus you don’t have to have an invitation. or friends for that matter. after a few beers everyone, even strangers, will be your friend anyway. the downside, people will be there to see you cry if the hawks don’t do well. and although you could go in your pJs, that might be frowned upon. not sure where to go? turn

At homeThrow a party. Or don’t. Up to you. If you decide to fly solo, you can even watch the game in your skivvies. But, you won’t have anyone to celebrate with on good plays or any shoulders to sob into over bad ones. This might be the cheapest option. Unless of course you can pack away a case and a large pizza on your own. Invite friends and you’ll have to, umm, get dressed. But there’s strength in numbers and if you ask nicely they might even bring some food.

If you want to go all out, there are recipes on page 9 and oodles more at www.HAwkEyEBowlGAmE.com .

three{ }Don’t watch

Choose this option and you run the risk of excluding yourself from small talk at parties for the next year when other guests are discussing a heartbreaking play. But, then again, maybe you don’t care. So why pretend? Skip the game and go enjoy all this snow we’ve been getting. Grab a sled and hit the slopes at Jones Park in Cedar Rapids or get yourself a pair of cross country skis (the University of Iowa Division of Recreational Services rents skis, poles and shoes) and hit the trails. Squaw Creek in Marion is groomed for cross country skiing. For more info, check out http://iowaski.blogspot.com

BOOKTALK { Hawkeye books for fans of all feathers.

“UnivErsity of iowA footbAll vAUlt” by Mike finn From the publisher (so you know it must be true): Mike Finn takes you from the early days when football was a fad from the East, to the early dynasty of Howard Jones, to the 1939 Ironmen and Nile Kinnick, through the glory years of Forest Evashevski, to the return to glory under Hayden Fry and Kirk Ferentz. This detailed “scrapbook” contains never-be-fore-published photographs, artwork and memorabilia drawn from Iowa’s athletic department and school archives. Tucked into dozens of pockets, fans will find reproductions of old game programs, historic tickets, postcards and photos. These fascinating replicas include an 1890 Iowa Wesleyan game stats sheet, a 1921 Aubrey Devine news clip, a 1939 Kinnick Heisman program, a 1952 Evashevski booklet, a 1955 Cal Jones news clip, a 1981 Fry Coach of the Year card and a 2004 Ohio State game ticket.

“thE 50 GrEAtEst PlAysin iowA hAwkEyEsfootbAll history” by Michael Maxwell University of Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who wrote the forward, says “A book like this really does make me appreciate all the great moments we worked so hard together to build here at the University of Iowa.” There are passages by the Voice of the Hawkeyes Gary Dolphin too. He says: “Are these 50 plays contained within the pages of this publication truly the greatest in Hawkeyes history? I think so. You and I might argue about their order of placement, but that’s the fun, excitement, and the joy of the read.” The 50 chapters describe the action, profile the participants and reveal the story behind each play.

“GrEAtEst MoMEnts in iowA hAwkEyEs footbAll history” by the Gazette staffCompiled by The Gazette in 2006, “Greatest Moments in Iowa Hawkeyes’ Football History” covers all the high points of the University of Iowa Hawkeye’s stellar record, both in the big Ten and in postseason bowl games, including the team’s annual struggle with archrival Minnesota for the world’s most famous pig trophy, the coveted “Floydof rosedale.”

“GAME DAy: iowA footbAll thE GrEAtEst GAMEs, PlAyErs, CoAChEs AnD tEAMs in thE GlorioUstrADition of hAwkEyE footbAll” by Athlon sportsAgain, from the publisher: The names are oh-so-familiar to fans of college football: Nile Kinnick, Alex Karras, Chuck long, brad banks, Tim Dwight, ladell betts and Drew Tate. Those names and countless others have given Iowa football an unmatched tradition and legacy of greatness. In this book, Athlon sports attempted to distill that tradition into words and pictures. A daunting task. Few programs inspire the loyalty and passion that Iowa football exacts from its fans, and withgood reason.

“bowls, Polls, AnD tAttErEDsoUls: tACklinG thE ChAos AnDControvErsy thAt rEiGn ovErCollEGE footbAll” by stewart MandelThis book tries to tackle the fanaticism and chaos that char-acterize college football today. Author Stewart Mandel takes a look at hot-button issues like the controversial bCS; the polls and rankings; the recruiting craze; cheating and recent scandals; the huge pressures and salaries heaped on coaches; the Heisman hype-fest; the NFl draft; conference expan-sions; and the proliferation of bowl games. Get behind-the-scenes insights on how the issues evolved and why some are almost impossible to resolve.

As if there isn’t enough football on television. Who wants to read about it too. Obviously someone, judging from the numerous booksdedicated to not just football, but Hawkeye football. So, if you’re a football widow looking to impress the hubs with some football factoidsor you’re just looking for a gift for the Hawk fan who has everything, one of these books might just do the trick.

My BrothersBeing a graduate of the University of Iowa, I’m pretty die-hard about be-ing a Hawkeye. I haven’t missed a home game in the last five years, and I don’t plan on missing any in the next five. It also helps that I have two brothers that play football for Iowa so I get to hear about all of the hard work that the team puts into preparing for the season. I’ll just say that it’s not all fun and games. It makes me very thankful that the guys are so dedicated, because I think you’d be pretty hard-pressed to find another group will-ing to submit themselves to several weeks of two-a-days for camp in the extreme heat of August.

Natalie Nielsen, 23, Iowa City University of Iowa Alumni Class of 2008

“Back in Black” & “Start Me Up”The excitement level in Kinnick escalates as the jumbotron flashes video of “the Swarm” heading out of the locker room on the way to the field. “Back in Black” by AC/DC and “Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones blare across the loudspeakers as thousands of fans get on their feet high-fiving and talking smack about how badly the Hawks are going to beat the opposing team. The giant flags spelling out I-O-W-A go up as the cheerleaders lead the team onto the field and the game gets underway.

Fans It never ceases to amaze me the sheer number of followers that the Iowa Hawkeyes have not only in Iowa, but all over the country. This past season I have been to almost all of the away games, and let me tell you. There is a reason they call Minnesota Kinnick North. If I had to guess, I would say there were probably almost as many Hawk fans there as there were Golden Gophers. I won’t start in about the Bowl Game, but for any of you that have ever been, you know about Hawk support in postseason play.

Tailgating It’s 7 a.m. and I’m walking down Melrose Avenue in front of the stadium on game day. The road is al-ready partially blocked off and the guy who sells Big Ass Turkey Legs is shouting at people stumbling by. Smells of barbecue and beer hang in the air, and there are about 40,000 other die-hards who have had their game face on since 6:30 a.m. or earlier. As I make my way to my preferred tailgating spot on Olive Court listening to the Iowa Fight Song streaming from cars all around, I smile to myself as I realize that there is a reason “in heaven there is no beer”. Two words. Hawkeye Tailgating. Go big or go home.

Herky Cheers erupt as Herky sticks the flag into the Kinnick field. Herky has become one of the most recogniz-able aspects of Hawk-eye sports. Climbing over the wall that is supposed to keep fans off the field – unless the Hawks win a big game, in which case Per Mar secu-rityhas no hope – Herky gets friendly with fans by giving hugs, high-fives and photo ops. Check out the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame and page 12 to find out more about Herky’s history.

“Win or lose, Hawk fans still booze.”Cheers! This is an occasion people have the excuse and it is “acceptable” to start drinking in the early hours of the morning. Later kickoff times are not used for sleeping but for socializing. At the end of the day it is a celebration of victory or drinking away a heartbreaking loss.

Brittney Robinson, 22, Cedar Rapids University of Iowa Alumni Class of 2008

Iowa SongsYou know the game is about to begin when you hear AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” As the crowd starts jumping and keys start rattling. Game on. After touchdowns every-one chants “I-O-W-A.” Together we sing “On Iowa” and “In Heaven… there is no Beer.” Songs in the stadium are just as fun, such as “Brown Eyed Girl” or when the you see fans trying to get on the big screen by, “Pumping the Burrito.” These songs are extra special on Hawkeye game days.

Tailgating at Kinnick StadiumKinnick Stadium has its own atmosphere and experience. Countless grills and coolers are scattered among every tailgate. Various vendors are everywhere filled with all kinds of food to satisfy any of your cravings. Even if it is a turkey leg that is bigger than you are. Tailgaters will never leave thirsty or hungry. When fans are not indulging and filling their stomachs, games like bags, beer pong and golf Frisbee are played. All weather conditions are a pos-sibility. Freezing cold or sizzling hot temperatures do not stop Hawk fans from tailgating.

Hawkeye NationAll Hawkeyes are family, from young to old. When you meet a Hawkeye you share a common ground and make friends. You’re supporting the same team and taunting the opponent. Hawk fans travel and can be found anywhere. Iowa Hawkeyes are a family community.

YOU SHOULD MEET

Herky the Hawk is a man (and yes, he’s a dude) about campus with a cachet quotient any University of Iowa co-ed would envy.

He can make 70,000 fans at kinnick stadium go nuts with a flip of a feathered wing. from Arizona to the Alamo, that hulking head (the heaviest in the NCAA) is a ticket to any Iowa fan’s heart.

born more than fifty years ago, Herky started out as a simple caricature drawn by UI journalism professor dick spencer at the request of the athletic department’s business director frank Havlick. He took to the football field for the first time in 1959.

His first costume was chicken wire and papier-mache. today the heads run nearly $6,000 each and are made in

the twin Cities by the same company that makes elmo and oscar the grouch.

Half a century ago Herky looked like a cross between Woody Woodpecker and a bald eagle. His snarl evolved more recently. the universal Herky – the one used in promotional materials by the school – was drawn by Iowa City native Charles reed, who was inspired by Mighty Mouse and wrestlerbarry davis.

the name Herky, short for Hercules, was the brainchild of John franklin of belle plaine who won a statewide competition to name the feathered fellow.

the names of the six UI students behind the character aren’t sowell known.

their identities are a secret. don’t try to ask Herky who he is either. ever noticed that he doesn’t talk? It’s all part of the persona.

for decades members of the delta tau delta fraternity at Iowa manned Herky’s nest. Now his digs are with the athletic department and students audition each spring for one of around six places in the Herky flock and a chance to be part of the UI tradition.

the students spend five to fifteen unpaid hours a week portraying Herky at sporting and community events. they also meet every week to practice the Herky’s signature strut and other moves like the high fives, basketball shots and autograph.

intheKITCHEN Need a go-to tailgatiNg recipe?We’ve got you covered . {

Mix it upHawkeye Snack Mix is high on tisha Junge’s “most re-quested” list. it’s addictive. it’s chocolatey, sweet, salty. any kind of mix like that seems to be a hit with everybody,” said Junge, of cedar rapids. “it’s got the granola in it, so it’s kind of a morning-time filler, and after the game with beer and other drinks, it’s nice to munch on.” it’s also easy to double or triple, depending on how many mouths you need to feed. Junge got the original recipe from a package of M&Ms and has made some adjustments — adding some ingredients, removing others — and renaming it to fit her favorite team. For an extra boost of school spirit, you can go to www.mms.com and order the candies in your team’s colors — and even custom-order text on them.(How about “go Hawks!”?)

Lighten upMaybe, after nearly two months of football food, you’re ready for something a little lighter. Something less meaty and a little more veg-friendly. Here’s a dip to try. “a lot of tailgate food is not so good for you,” said Jennifer Koester of Marion, who sent us this recipe for Bloody Mary Dip. “one thing about (this dip) is it goes really well with veg-etables.” Koester especially likes to serve it with celery, carrots, cau-liflower florets and radishes. crackers are good, too. Koester, a cyclone fan (but we’ll forgive her), got this recipe from her mom, a retired home economics teacher. “i’ve never had (this dip) anywhere else,” she said.“it’s a little unusual.”

Crowd pleaserStephanie Nelson always leaves tailgate parties with a clean plate. that must be why she calls this recipe — her standby for Hawkeye football games — Everybody’s Favorite Easy Mexican Dip. “everybody likes it, and they ask how to make it, and i’m almost ashamed to admit how easy it is,” said Nelson, a native iowa citian and iowa alumna who lives in grinnell. “i’ve been making it for over 10 years. i know it like the back of my hand.” add or subtract a layer if you wish, and use as much or as little of the toppings (tomatoes, olives, green onions, cheeses, etc.) as you’d like to suit your — or your guests’ — tastes. this dip should be enough for about a dozen people, Nelson said. For more, double the recipe and use a 9-by-13-inch pan.

Whether you started planning your game day menu weeks ago or it’s the night before the big game and you’re wishing you had a couple go-todishes to throw together, we’ve got the recipe for you. Some are classics, others a twist on an old favorite. all were recommended by tailgating pro and orignally printed in the gazette’s pigskin potluck series. See easy-to-clip recipes on the next page.

Some like it hotFew things are better accompaniments to a hot bowl of chili than a thick slice of cornbread — which is why this recipe from robin Shull of Washington, iowa, for Mexican Cornbread is the perfect way to top off a big bowl. “the bacon in it makes it really good... and there’s just enough of the red pepper in it that it gives it a little bit of a bite,” said Shull, 50, a longtime Hawkeye fan. this bread couldn’t be easier to make: “all you do is dump everything together, and then a lot of times i just leave it in the fridge until i’m ready to cook it,” Shull said. the cornbread, she added, is always a hit at parties.

Less Messif dawn pressler is heading to a tailgate this weekend, chances are she’s taking a big bowl of Chicken Wing Dip with her. “it’s become a favorite,” said pressler, 52, of coralville. “in this group (of friends), at every party we have to have this dip.” What makes the dip so great? “it tastes just like buffalo wings,” pressler said. plus, it feeds a crowd and is easy to put together. another bonus: you can customize the recipe to your own taste. pressler prefers to make it using a “mild” hot sauce, but you could turn up the heat by choosing a hot sauce with a little more fire to it. this dip also can be made using whatever type of chicken you have on hand.

Fill ‘er upWhen tailgating begins before noon, Breakfast Burritos are a perfect way to start the party. the hearty, protein-filled wraps will keep you energized for the game long after others’ dough-nut-induced sugar rushes wear off. plus, the burritos are easy to make and to customize to your crowd’s tastes, said renee Severson of cedar rapids, who has had this recipe in her files for about 20 years. “My kids don’t like the onions and green peppers, so i make it kind of plain for them,” she said, “but if it’s going to be adults, i’ll throw in anything i can find, like jalapenos. you could also use different kinds of cheeses, or, if you aren’t a huge pork sausage fan, you could use ground turkey or ground beef. it’s definitely a recipe that you can get creative with.” Her version gets a nice kick from the spices in the Southern-style hash browns. an insulated carrier makes the burritos easy to transport, but they could be prepared on a grill at the tailgate site. this dish is good for other events, too, Severson said, like picnics, potlucks or even just breakfast at home.

hit between the third and fourth quarters. It’s always conducted by the band manager.

Where’s the beer? After every victory, the band plays “In Heaven, There

is No Beer.” The song was once played as often as the Iowa Fight Song and “On Iowa.” In 2001, the song was banned, presumably because of its beery lyrics. But the 40-year-old tradition is back, with the music conducted by the drum major and sung by fans after every Hawk-eye win.

Backward but happy If the Hawks win, band members turn their hats back-

ward for the march out of the stadium.

Stylin’■ Iowa’s band gets new uniforms every 10 years. The new

look (as of three years ago) updated the “Iowa” lettering across the chest, replaced the marching Herky emblem with a retro Tiger Hawk and added a yellow stripe to the pants.

■ Like most Big Ten bands, the Hawkeye Marching Band wears white spats over shoes. The drum major wears knee-high black boots. Everyone wears black gloves.

■ Drum Major Chet Aliga wears a traditional white faux fur hat that is 14 inches high. The rest of the band dons shakos with golden plumes.

Practice, practice■ The band rehearses Monday through Friday from 3:40

to 5:30 p.m.■ The band learns each week’s music at an additional

two-hour practice on Wednesday night.

Thousands of Hawkeye fans will flood Tampa Bay this week for the 2008 Outback Bowl. They say they’re headed to Florida to watch the University of Iowa play the University of South Carolina at Raymond James Stadium on Jan. 1. But we know the real reason for the rush to buy tickets to the big game. Tampa Bay — the region surrounding a 400-square-mile bay, not just one city — has 35 miles of white sandy beaches.

Back in Iowa, we have a whole lot of something white, but it’s not warm sand. According to the National Weather Service, Tampa Bay has anaverage of 361 days of sunshine every year. Winter temperatures average about 63 degrees. Jealous? Here’s what else you could be doing ifyou’d bought tickets to the game too.

GETOUT { Wish you were in Tampa for the game? Want to be even more jealous, read this.
