Honors CollegeClass of 2014 Medallion Ceremony
UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS BOSTON
MAY 28, 2014
A Message from the DeanGreetings and welcome to the Honors College Medallion Ceremony. My colleagues and I find this a most joyous time of year during which we gather to celebrate the accomplishments of our students. This is an extra special ceremony, as it is our first as an Honors College -- after more than 20 years of service to the campus as the University Honors Program.
The range of senior theses and projects this year is clear evidence of the heterogeneity of the students in the Honors College. Every single one of you has exhibited intellectual boldness: a quality that we like to cultivate in all of our students. Intellectual boldness means that you have ventured beyond the fields of knowledge that constitute your zone of comfort. The sociologists among you have engaged with creative writing, the economists with biology, and the computer scientists with philosophy. We urge you never to lose that sense of adventurousness, never to seek refuge in narrow compartments of inquiry.
The medallion and cord that our graduates receive today represent their accomplishments and signal a responsibility to use their newly minted knowledge and skills to bring light to those places that need it most. Perhaps there is no more fitting duty for our institution’s latest and most extraordinary Beacons than to use their knowledge in the service of global and local citizenship.
Best of luck to each of you,
Rajini SrikanthRajini Srikanth, Ph.D.Dean, Honors CollegeProfessor, English

The Robert H. Spaethling Prize is awarded annually by the Honors College Dean to the student who has established a record of outstanding achievement in the Honors College. Candidates should exhibit accomplishment across a range of fields and, in the testimony of their Honors teachers, emerge as models of intellectual curiosity and sophistication and exhibit a passion for learning. A grade point average in the summa cum laude range is expected.
The Blair-Moulton Travel Grant has been awarded since 2008. Joel Blair was a Professor of English at UMass Boston and was the director of the Honors Program in its very early days. He and his partner Peter Moulton were generous benefactors to the University during their lifetimes. Because he remembered his powerful mind-expanding travel experience right after the completion of his undergraduate degree, Professor Blair wished to provide that opportunity to a graduating Honors College senior each year. He and Peter Moulton established this travel award of $2,500 in order to provide this opportunity. Applicants for this award write an essay answering the question: “Where do you wish to travel, and what do you hope to get out of this experience?” The essays are read anonymously, and the winner is selected by a group of faculty and staff who are friends of the Honors College.
The Classroom Leadership Award is given to the Honors College student in each Honors course who is identified by the Honors teacher as exhibiting not only authentic engagement with his or her own learning, but also sustained, enlightened, and effective leadership in contributing to the learning of others. Nominees are students of uncommon force of mind who also meet a multi-faceted definition of leadership in building a community of leaders within the College and, ideally, in the University as a whole.
