a note from the editor
Ah, autumn. Th e color season is here again and Northern Mich-igan will — as always — put on its brilliant display of the colors of the rainbow.
Th is issue of HomeLife is focused on what I call adventures in landscaping. Why focus on landscaping in the fall, when the grow-ing season is at its end? Simple. Now is the time to make your plans for next spring, whether that involves booking an oft-sought landscape designer or etching out your own plans for next season’s garden paradise. So we visited professional and amateur plant people to highlight their craft.
Both Dianne DeWitt, of Petoskey, and Cin-di Malin, of Boyne City, spend their free time puttering in their respective gardens. Dianne is focused on shade gardening thanks to her scenic, woodsy plot near the Petoskey-Bay View Country Club. Comparatively, Cindi’s space has much more sun and accompanying bright, showy blooms.
Th en there’s Richard Hoff man and his
big, bold boulders. He is an expert at dry-laid rock wall hardscapes who loves to work with clients to achieve specifi c goals. One of his de-signs featured in this edition is in-tended to create a private play place for a family in Bay Harbor, with another one meant to bring back a lush, hillside garden on Walloon Lake tragi-cally destroyed by fi re.
But should you choose to plant trees and bushes on your own, be sure to take the ad-vice of John Campbell, of Site Planning Devel-opment. His years in landscaping — in addi-tion to building — means his tips on planting and mulching in this issue’s advice column is worth more than its weight.
Lynn and Rob Maxwell’s home on Lake
Charlevoix is a fantastic remodel with breath-taking lake views, personal and meaning-ful touches at every turn, plus lovely and inviting outdoor spaces for relaxing in the northwoods. Th ey worked with top-notch designers and builders to achieve their gor-geous slice of Northern Michigan’s pie.
Speaking of pie, we also spent some time in the Grand Traverse Pie Company kitch-en in downtown Petoskey, where the fall harvest comes together in delicious fashion with fruit, nut and pumpkin pies, sold both by the slice and as whole pies for your fam-ily’s table.
So, please enjoy this edition of HomeLife magazine and my recent adventures in land-scaping with photographer G. Randall Goss. We can’t refl ect everything at which we got a look, but hope you like this glimpse.

Not every homeowner en-trusts their garden visions to the hands of others. Some are do-it-yourselfers.
Th ere’s all kinds of DIY gardens out there and each is dependent on the local weather. Northern Michigan has a temperate climate and soils here tend to be coarse, often sandy. Th at combined with a short growing season and generally cool weather presents both professional landscapers and home gardeners with sig-nifi cant challenges.
Th at’s why stunning Northern Michi-gan gardens seem so very special. And here’s a couple of examples of hobby gar-dens designed and created by amateurs with a passion for planting.
Abundant bloomsCindi and Frank Malin, of Boyne City,
have the kind of garden at which passersby stop to gawk. It’s a blooming bonanza with colorful petals at every turn. Th e idea is both abundance and tradition, Cindi said.
“Th e side garden is all fl owers. I wanted it to be really English,” she said.
And her tradition is generations in the making. Most of the plants and fl owers are hand-me-downs or came in trade with other gardeners. Others she’s never been without.
“I’ve moved and the fl owers have come with me,” Cindi said, laughing.
Recently, she helped her daughter plant a new garden and at the time realized the transplanted fl owers represented fi ve gen-erations of family members with green thumbs.
In the shady spaces of Cindi and Frank’s yard, a foliage show is on display with ferns and about a dozen varieties of hostas.
Th ere’s even an herb garden from which they regularly eat. But it’s the blooming side that draws the most attention.
“You know, we come home and there’s people getting their picture taken in our garden by the shed,” Cindi said. A young woman even once had her senior portraits made there, she said.
And now that autumn is here, the idea is for the blooms to go to seed and be re-born. Cindi said that’s the way it always goes. “I love that the seeds fall down and then grow again,” she said.
By and large, Cindi only really need remove weeds from the garden since it’s now its own living, growing organism, in a sense. Good thing Cindi and Frank worked that into their relationship’s very foundation.

“Part of our vow was I would do all the weeding and he cleans it up, but he didn’t know what kind of a gardener I am,” Cindi said while laughing, but without the feel of actually joking.
Elegant foliageDianne and Mike DeWitt, of
Petoskey, live in a magical, shaded space on the edge of the woods not far from the Petoskey-Bay View Country Club. The towering trees growing up the adjacent steep hill provide ample protection from the sun’s hot rays, but rob home gar-dener Dianne of sun-soaked flower beds.
“I do no blooms. I do all foliage,” Dianne said.
Well, there’s a bloom here and there. Her many hostas bloom and there’s one bright pink hydrangea along the side of the garage. But more often than not, the breathtak-ing beauty of Dianne’s garden comes in the varying shades of green. And that’s a relatively new thing for her.
“It’s been a six-year journey,” she said. “When I started there was no grass or anything in this lawn. We went from a brand new built home to a remodel here, and from 100 percent sunny to mostly shade. So I had to re-think things.”
Around every turn is cascading ferns, breezy grasses and a rainbow of greens reflected in the many hos-tas, from lime to forest and even twinges of blue. It’s a shade garden bursting forth in celebratory fash-ion. The only thing she kept are the yews in front of the house.
Take the Seal Garden, for exam-ple. It’s designed to commemorate Special Warfare Operator Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Heath M. Robinson, 34, who died two years ago in Afghanistan. Robinson was a Petoskey graduate and friend to Nik DeWitt, Dianne and Mike’s son.
So after his death, Dianne created a dedicated space to memorialize each troop who died in the heli-copter attack and crash that killed Robinson and more than two doz-en others, including 17 U.S. Navy SEALs. There’s a plant for each of the dead in the memorial garden; the Canadian hemlock represents Heath’s memory.
Nearby that special place is the Birthday Garden, tended by Di-anne’s mother, Loraine Crabtree,
who also lives in the home. There’s a plant for every family member and Irish moss growing between the walking path stones, which Di-anne said blossom little, white pet-als in the spring and summer. In fact, that space is the one relatively sunny place on the entire property, stocked with pink coneflowers, pe-tunias and even roses.
But it’s the greenery that begs a second look by friends and neigh-bors. Bright, bold, expansive

greenery that demonstrates Di-anne’s multi-year lesson in shade gardening. And not only is the garden beautiful, but it’s amazing-ly easy to tend, save for the usual weeding.
“The hostas you can leave to rot away. When they are dead and gone I just grab them up,” Dianne said. “The ferns just lie down and go to sleep.”
Now she plans to let the garden grow up and focus her skills on either her mother-in-law’s garden across the street or the hospice garden where she volunteers.
“It’s time to stop and let it mature because you can get too much out there,” Dianne said. “I planned it, planted it and maintain it. It’s a labor of love.” HL

ADVENTURES IN LANDSCAPING
HOMElife 15
Hard rock a rt
By Sheri McWhirter-O’Donnell Photography by G. Randall Goss
Landscaper masters the skill of dry-laid rock walls
Hardscape is an art form in Northern Michigan. Profes-sional landscapers often use natural stones in local proj-ects to augment the beauty
of the surroundings and take advantage of magnificent granite and other stones found here and other northern reaches.
A special niche among the trade is dry-laid stone walls, designed and crafted without the use of mortar to secure piec-es together. Not everyone does it as well as others, but one who excels is Richard Hoffman, a longtime and well-regarded landscaper. There are two special proj-ects he and his dedicated crew completed which stand apart for special recognition.
Boulders in Bay HarborHoffman closely worked with the ho-
meowners of a stunning property in the exclusive area known as The Peninsula in Bay Harbor, all to create a garden sanctu-ary designed for the family’s specific needs.
“She wanted a stairway. He wanted a water feature,” Hoffman said.
16 a n u p - n o r t h M A G A Z I N E
And did he ever deliver.“This is all dry laid. There’s no mortar
in there at all,” he said while standing be-fore the impressive project.
The premiere hardscaped garden area includes granite and limestone boulders placed with a fabric lining and then landscaped with a variety of plants and flowers. Special features include a small, shallow pond designed as a safe swim-ming spot for the grandchildren. There also is a waterfall that feeds the pond, with its small field stone-covered bot-tom. They needed a crane to place the large stone for the water feature which uses natural lake water, rather than a chlorinated concoction.
Overall, the idea was to create a private patio with lush, luxurious sur-roundings. It’s the perfect place to relax in Northern Michigan’s outdoors.
“We wanted to give enough room to entertain and have the kiddie pool,” Hoffman said. “We built a little bar for them out of stone.”
A subcontractor laid the tile work and Hoffman’s crew focused on the spe-cialized walls and decorative features.
“It’s mostly granite and there is some limestone in there, but we also wanted to match the Bay Harbor style, so we used gray stone, as well,” Hoffman said.
There are junipers grown to hearty maturity and groomed in bonsai fash-ion. Birch trees line the edges of the space, and an iron sculpture of three children is placed so they peer into the little swimming pond.
“It was a fun project,” Hoffman said, smiling wide.
Along the private road is a hard-scaped wall designed to look natural and a bit wild. Granite boulders are adorned with a century-old log plucked from un-derwater somewhere, last touched when stamped by a logging company. Across the road is that desired stairway leading up to the driveway and front door, each piece a specially selected stone with

a rough, but level surface. Behind the house, on the Lake Michi-
gan shoreline, another windswept patio also is lined with boulders and decorative floral displays. It’s an elevated space when compared to the neighbors’ back yards, in-tended to block a view of the rocky shore-line and allow the sight of white-capped after white-capped wave.
Walloon hillside splendorAnother Hoffman project on the Wal-
loon Lake shoreline is a lush display of flora and fauna meant to replenish a space destroyed by fire. And replenish is an un-derstatement.
Butterfly bushes, hydrangeas, cone flowers, day lilies, black-eyed Susans and big beautiful begonias are just the start. More large, gorgeous granite boulders are found at every turn. Even large Chilton stones — impressive samples from Emmet Brick & Block — were used as stair steps leading down to the shoreline and dock.
There is a stone bench overlooking the lake, all amid the bountiful flower garden and next to one of three Prairiefire crab apple trees. A hot tub is found beneath the house’s upper deck, adjacent to the start of the site’s meandering stone-lined stream that drains down to the shoreline. It’s a hyp-notic spot that includes a view of Walloon Lake’s turquoise waters.
But perhaps Hoffman’s favorite part of the project are the dawn redwoods planted throughout the site. Two larger trees were planted in the back garden closer to the house, while other smaller samples line the driveway out front and fill the woodsy area between there and the garage. It’s a species known to have grown here 25 million years ago and Hoffman is determined to return the tree’s splendor back to Northern Mich-igan. Specifically, he wants 300 planted in Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet coun-ties, plus areas beyond, too.
He’s particularly proud of the progress of one dawn redwood, half the size of an-other when planted but now grown taller than its companion.
“If a tree likes the spot where it’s placed, it will take off,” Hoffman said, smiling again. HL

Ex TRAORDINARy HOMES
Pathway to paradiseYear-round Horton Bay residents overhauled
their Lake Charlevoix homeBy Sheri McWhirter-O’Donnell • Photography by G. Randall Goss
Rob and Lynn Maxwell love their home in Hor-ton Bay. Moreover, they love Horton Bay — the people, places and quaint
community feel — which is why they purchased a home there and then remodeled it to mesh with their lifestyle.
“We love Horton Bay. Retiring here was most serendipitous as was my first job in 1969 washing toma-to pudding pots at the Red Fox for Marion Hartwell,” Lynn said.
Lynn grew up in Boyne City and worked summertimes in Horton Bay. After moving down-state and living there for years, she introduced Rob to her home-town, her place that feels like home. They bought their Up North home in 1998 and made regular visits.
“At some point you moved here, didn’t you?” Rob said to Lynn. “See, I still go downstate to work and then come back. But she stopped going.”
Maybe that’s because once liv-ing in Horton Bay, she sees little reason to go elsewhere. It is para-dise, after all.
“We feel so privileged. Aren’t we lucky to live here?” Lynn said. “It doesn’t get any better than this.”
And to this day, Lynn can be found at the Horton Bay General Store from time to time, pitch-ing in and helping out. She’s the
ice cream scooper following the traditional Horton Bay annual bridge walk on Labor Day.
Re-tooling for lifestyleThe Maxwell home is perched
along the Lake Charlevoix shoreline, right in the middle of its Horton Bay. The architect was Alex Bogaerts, who is well-known for his work on various Bay Harbor houses.
“This was his summer cottage and we’ve had it for 15 years,” Lynn said. “We’ve not changed the footprint.”
The Maxwells renovated the house and garage buildings in 2012, altering functions of some rooms to suit their habits and hobbies. Interior design was by Barbara Ann Petro Interiors, from the Detroit area, while the kitchen design was by Liz Fire-baugh, of Signature Kitchens in Petoskey.
But the first thing visitors no-tice is the garage building by the road. Sure, there’s a multiple-car garage kept in tidy condition, but upstairs is a shutterbug’s man cave worth envying. Rob has antique cameras on display, a high-tech editing computer and in addition, space to attend to his legal work as he nears retirement, he said. Oh, and don’t forget the cozy sitting area, the favorite space of the queen of the castle,
HOMElife 23
Lilly, a 15-year-old cat adopted years ago from the Charlevoix Area Humane Society.
“This is her little abode,” Lynn said.Next comes a long, wooden walkway
surrounded by a cedar swamp — sans insects — adorned with overflowing pots of begonias. It’s like an enchanted pathway to Fern Gully, or some other such mystical, magical, environmental treasure. At the start is a large, family-owned cast iron bell intended as the Maxwell’s doorbell. Guests sound the bell and then make their way down the boardwalk to the shoreline home, now a year-round residence after being trans-formed from a swank summer cottage.
“When you hear a bell in Horton Bay, it’s either church or us,” Rob said, laugh-ing.
The bell and other installations are what the couple refer to as “swamp art,” a pet project to include fine art sculp-tures into their garden design.
The main level is home to the space-
conscience kitchen, dining room, three-seasons porch, library and powder room.
Lynn said she asked Firebaugh to design the kitchen to prevent over-
crowding while she is in there cooking or otherwise. The peninsula counter is designed to be the line of demarcation, Lynn said, while using her hand to draw the invisible boundary line, all while Rob stood nearby affirmatively nodding.
“My goal was to keep everybody out,” Lynn said, smiling wide. “Traffic prob-lem solved.
Another mission involved allowing more light to shine into the kitchen. It used to be somewhat dark with rather small windows, Lynn said.
“It would be a sin to not be able to see outside here,” she said, peering through the large window and into the cedar for-est outside.
An arched, beveled glass piece hangs above the window by the induction cook top. It matches another large, round beveled glass installation in the great room, commissioned to be craft-ed by Jordan Valley Glassworks, of East Jordan.
“When the sun shines through, it

always casts prisms throughout the house, which move as the sun moves in the sky,” Lynn said with excitement in her voice.
The great room, or living room, has a vaulted ceiling painted cottage white and the stone walls are made with ledge rock from Petoskey’s Em-met Brick & Block, placed at various depths to give an exaggerated tex-tured feel. Built into that is a fireplace that’s flush with the wall, rather than being inset. The room is bright and airy, as well as completely comfort-able with ideal views of the lake. It’s the ideal place to stretch out for Cav-alier King Charles spaniels Tucker, 5 years, and sister Lucy, 6 years, who are each known for following their people from room to room, keeping an eye on their minions as they rule the roost.
There’s also a perfectly placed three-seasons porch on the ground level, as well as a well-stocked library with lake views and a small pow-der room with an unique feature — there’s a small cottage window placed within the wall mirror. Just outside the water closet entrance is a stun-ning pass-through display case for crystalware, viewable from either sparkling side.
Upstairs specialtiesOne level up is where the master
bedroom is found. It exudes a tradi-tional, antique feel thanks to the large, aged wardrobes placed in the lakev-iew room. In fact, remodel workers completed their jobs around the old, dark wardrobes, locking them into place in the Lake Charlevoix home. The beautiful furniture came from Petoskey’s Joie de Vie Antiques, Lynn said, and the wood color in the room is designed to match the large pieces.
“We built this whole wall to match the antique wardrobes,” Lynn said.
Additionally, a king sleigh bed an-chors the room, also adorned with a large, heavy, wooden floor mirror

“Yes, of course they sleep with us,” Lynn said.
But maybe the most impressive room on this floor is the walk-in closet. Or rather, the bedroom closet. That’s
right. The Maxwells took a small bed-room, lined all the walls with organizing shelves and hanging rods, then installed both a granite-topped island counter-top and a wall side makeup vanity. The space is every woman’s dream, as it is for Lynn.
“We started with five bedrooms and now we have three. These are his winter shirts. It’s as much real estate as I’ll give him,” she said, chuckling.
Around the corner and up another set of stairs is the third floor, where there is a spare bedroom and a sitting room.
“We turned the third floor into a guest suite. One of the bedrooms be-came a cozy reading or TV room. My parents love it. Lots of privacy, but only steps away from the action,” Lynn said.
The couple also hired Jeff Arnold as their painter, Dino Franchino to do floors and tile work, Peggy’s Gardening for landscaping and exterior floral de-sign, and finally, Tim Schlappi Creative Millwork to create custom wooden de-signs, such as all new crown molding and chunky window and door trims. A utumn is here and that means it’s time for pie, pie and even more pie.
Amy Westphal, the new Petoskey franchise
owner for Grand Traverse Pie Com-pany, said it’s been a busy summer this year with plenty of tourists eager for a sweet taste of the north. But now it’s time for the holidays to roll along and that translates to special order
season at the downtown pie shop.“Strawberry rhubarb and cherry
crumble pies have been the big sellers this year,” Westphal said. “In the fall we start carrying pumpkin and pecan pies, as well.”
Most of the fruits used in the bak-ery’s operations are sourced in Michi-gan, including several Up North grow-ers. Apples, blueberries and cherries all come from farmers in the Frankfort

famed ABC pie — apples, blueberries and cherries. Another fan favorite is the peach and blackberry crumble pie, West-phal said.
And ultimately, the whole gig is for the love of pie.
“People are happy when they are eating pie,” Westphal said.

in baker Alta Munson, a recently retired schoolteacher and longtime friend with Westphal.
Munson said her pie philosophy in-volves fruit, sugar, flour and love.
“I kind of think of myself as a pie artist. I want every pie to be perfect. It’s going to somebody’s home,” Munson said. “No naked fruit.”
All the fruit used in Grand Traverse Pie Company pies is picked fresh and im-mediately frozen, not even thawed before being doused in sweet, delicious crumbles and placed in the oven. Additionally, crust pastry is used to create little heart shapes to bake on top of the pies. So, there’s no cherry on top, but a sweet symbol of the love inside, the ladies said, laughing.
Westphal’s daughter, Abigail, also works in the downtown shop. She said the place runs as a team effort, a cohesive bakery family, if you will. And she’s got her favor-ite, she admitted.
“It will always be cherry. I never get tired of it,” Abigail said, smiling wide.
Grand Traverse Pie Company is accept-ing special orders for holiday meals and otherwise. Orders can be placed by calling (231) 348-4060, or visiting the store at 316 E. Mitchell St., in the heart of Petoskey’s Gaslight District. HL

A FEW GOOD REASONS TO MULCH YOUR PLANTS:Slows weed growthRetains moisturePrevents wind erosionInsulates the ground from extreme
temperature fl uctuationsRecycles wood bark and other
organic productsReduces use of herbicidesLooks goodWorms love wood bark (worm
castings are a great source of food)
Prevents weeds from stealing nutrients
Environmentally friendly
It is always an adventure to select the best group of plants to provide color, fruit, screening, shape and other environmental and social needs for the landscape.
Let us talk about size. People wear clothes to keep warm.
People and plants’ needs are food, wa-ter and space to grow.
I certainly will not fi t into my in-fant clothing, so why do we think that a 2- or 3-foot spruce will have enough space to grow planted 3 feet from the house? Branches will rub against the siding and shingles and the roots will attack the foundation.
Sometimes two or three will be planted close together which will re-strict air fl ow, rob food from each other, limit water and therefore cause stress, poor health, disease and death. Ask your nursery expert about the eventual size your selected plant will grow to in 10-15 years.
About 12 years ago, I planted a cor-nelian cherry with its nice, yellow fl ow-er — blooming before forsythia in the spring — 15 feet from our home. Today, it is 16 feet tall and 14 feet in diameter. It was 5-6 feet in height when planted. It now shades a section of my wife’s fl ower garden, not a good move.
Th ere are numerous websites which provide excellent information on the long-term size of the plant that will provide what you desire.
And why is mulching important? A few reasons: it slows weed growth, re-
tains moisture in the ground, prevents wind erosion, insulates the ground from extreme temperature fl uctua-tions, recycles wood bark and other organic products, reduces use of her-bicides, looks good, worms love wood bark (worm castings are a great source of food), prevents weeds from stealing nutrients from plants and most mulch-es are environmentally friendly.
Natural products such as bark, wood chips, coco bean husks, straw and pine needles should not be used with a weed barrier fabric, especially visqueen (plastic sheeting) as they re-
strict water, nutrients and air from reaching the plant’s roots. Wood chips rob nitrogen from the soil and there-fore the plants.
A breathable fabric can be used un-der stone mulch.
Stone mulch in a planting bed pro-vides a lot of refl ective heat, but does not act as a soil insulator during sum-mer and winter.
Remember plants do grow and mulching about 2-3 inches deep allows air, water and food to reach the roots, allowing the plant to grow and perform its magic — coolness in its summer shade, protection from winter winds, beautiful colors in spring and fall, plus both food and warmth when its day is done.
Planting, mulching takes forethought

How do you make 11,000 square feet seem cozy? You bring fresh summery colors into every nook - and you make the nooks count. Every place you turn, something beckons you to relax, enjoy this moment, take a look out the windows over a serene landscape down to 300' of Lake Charlevoix waterfront... You make the kitchen heartbeat inviting and roomy enough for a dozen midnight cocoa-drinkers. Nine bedrooms, 7 baths, a long screened-in porch, a living room for living in... Beautifully constructed for your life.
10 lovely acres and a long stretch of beach set the backdrop for this incredible home. Besides a 22' x 44' pole barn and 23' x 31' garage, the home has 18 comfortable rooms, from the children's bedroom with a plethora of whisper-friendly bunks and game room upstairs, to the hockey "rink" and enormous recreation room downstairs. Have it all: Plenty of cozy, inviting living areas; active, busy recreation areas; inspiring work space, and abundant storage for an active family's toys. 436586 $2,790,000
