For What It’s WurthFriends and Partners of CHNK:

2018 has been one of the fastest-paced years I can recall. I am struggling to embrace the fact that it is already time for the winter holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day come at lightning pace, it seems.

At this time of year when I was a child, my mom would hand my younger brother and me a Sears Christmas Wish Book catalog which arrived in the US Mail in those 1970’s days. She would tell us that we should mark what items we wanted Santa to bring us during his annual visit. I can remember us sitting at the dining room table furiously marking nearly every item on the 620 pages of the magical book. We simply had to circle the Mattel Electronic Hand Held Game Device that featured a white dot being ping-ponged back and forth from each side of the screen AND IT COULD BE OURS. Only later in life did I realize that my mom had hours to herself around the house while my brother and I found ourselves covered in blue ink from circling each item on the glossy pages.

At CHNK, we’re preparing for this special time of year as we launch Children’s Success Fund 2018. As we’ve done for decades prior, we are asking you to make a generous donation to make dreams come true for the children, young adults, and family members receiving care at our three Northern Kentucky locations. The dreams you are making possible can’t be found in a catalog Wish Book. The dollars you provide via the attached envelope or online will translate to protection for an abused child in state’s custody, permanency for a youth moving from CHNK to a forever family, sobriety for an adolescent navigating addiction.

What gifts would you “circle” for these abused, neglected, at-risk, and traumatized kids this holiday season? As you complete the enclosed donation envelope or make your gift online at www.chnk.org/donate, know that I thank you sincerely and wish you all the best of this Christmas season and the New Year 2019.

What does hope look like to you?At CHNK, we’re in the business of hope and opportunity. For Sophie, our Director of Barketing, hope looked like her mom, CHNK Development Manager Anne Sturgis, rescuing her through the Stray Animal Adoption Program in 2014.

She’s been thanking Santa with kisses ever since! This holiday season, we want to know what hope looks like to you. Tag us on social media and use the #hopelookslike hashtag to show us; we’ll be sharing and commenting on as many as we can!

2018 Marks Record-Breaking Charity BallFor 82 years, the Junior Board of CHNK has planned and hosted an annual fundraising event to benefit the young clients in CHNK’s care. While the first events were garden parties, the effort has grown into what is now known as the Charity Ball – CHNK’s only major fundraising event each year.

This year’s official theme was a Winter Wonderland, but unofficially, the event followed a theme of breaking records – not only did the Charity Ball have more guests and more sponsors than ever before, it also saw a nearly 76 percent increase in net revenue. Incredible!

Perhaps the most exciting part of the evening came when CHNK CEO Rick Wurth shared with guests his dream of opening an Outpatient Services location in Boone County. Since first opening our Covington Outpatient Services location in 2014, CHNK has impacted over 8,000 individuals in need of behavioral health and addiction treatment services. But we know there’s more youth who need our help, and we know they aren’t necessarily able to easily get to our Covington location. So Rick asked Charity Ball guests to join him in making a donation to the 2018 Children’s Success Fund, which this year, will help make this dream of expansion a reality.

Over 100 guests joined him – enough to cover the cost of a lease for the first year. And Don Paparella, General Manager of Mercedes-Benz of Fort Mitchell, provided the cherry on top with a $20,000 pledge from the dealership!

“My wife Heather and I were watching Rick so passionately speak about why a Boone County outpatient office was needed,” shared Paparella.“We believe that his passion and drive would make this location a huge success and ultimately help OUR community. Mercedes-Benz of Fort Mitchell was honored to make this pledge.”

On behalf of the Junior Board and the CHNK Development Office, THANK YOU to our sponsors, in-kind supporters, and guests who

made this year’s Charity Ball the most successful – and most memorable – in the history of the event. We look

forward to breaking even more records next year!

Giving Tree Project 2018Santa is always very generous on Christmas morning when it comes to our young clients in residential treatment. It’s never difficult to find cheerful elves in the community who want to help with the “fun” items under the tree – the games and toys and stuffed animals.

But the kids at CHNK are no different than the kids in your own family; their needs are much greater than what can be fulfilled just on one day. They need clothing and shoes as they grow and develop. They need personal hygiene products to keep themselves clean, and household cleaning supplies to keep their home environment healthy. They need sheets and pillows, washcloths and bath towels. Items that aren’t particularly “fun” but very much needed.

So that’s where Santa steps away and our Giving Tree Project supporters step in. Since 2011, we’ve asked businesses in our area to host a Giving Tree in support of CHNK clients. Gift tags on the trees are for items that we need throughout the entire year – like Tide Pods and sheet sets and toothpaste. Customers at these businesses remove tags when dropping off their dry cleaning, doing their banking, or buying a cup of coffee and bring back the items they purchased the next time they stop in.

This year we have over 30 businesses putting up trees in support of CHNK, plus numerous other businesses, schools, churches, and civic groups who are collecting items from our wish list. So if you find yourself in one of the businesses supporting CHNK this holiday season, or someone you know shares that they’ve made a donation to our agency, please thank them for supporting us! Likewise, if you’re not familiar with some of the businesses participating in our Giving Tree program, maybe it’s time to try out a new restaurant or coffee shop or dry cleaner…

The Top 10One of the questions we hear most frequently is, “Other than money, what type of donation do you need most?” Here’s our Top 10 list:

(All items must be new; we are unable to accept gently used/worn donations)

Children’s Success Fund 2018

In just a few days, our annual Children’s Success Fund mailer will hit mailboxes across the country – and even internationally! We’re blessed to have supporters from all corners of the globe who give their first gift of the holiday season to CHNK.

For many of us, the holiday season is a truly joyous time of year – a time to give thanks for our blessings, a time to celebrate love and friendship, a time to make special memories with the people who mean the most to us. It’s a season for miracles, and it’s a season for hope.

But for a young survivor of abuse, or a family with a suicidal daughter, or a grandmother raising her grandchild who was born into addiction, the holidays may feel more hopeless than hopeful.

By supporting our annual Children’s Success Fund campaign, you can help the 1,700 youth and family members who benefit from our therapeutic services each year. This year’s campaign will specifically help us establish a CHNK Behavioral Health Outpatient Services location in Boone County – allowing us to annually serve nearly 1,000 more youth and families grappling with mental health and addiction issues.

Our guests at the 2018 Charity Ball kicked off this year’s Children’s Success Fund with enough donations to secure the first year lease of this new space. Now we need help with preparing the space for clients – furniture, technology, signage, and lighting! Help us make this much-needed expansion a reality by contributing to this year’s Children’s Success Fund!

Gifts to the Children’s Success Fund can be made in one of three ways:

1. By returning the enclosed donation envelope with your check or credit card information

2. By going to www.chnk.org/donate to make your donation quickly and securely online via credit card

3. By dropping off your donation in person at the Administration Building of our Devou Park campus; the building is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm

Here’s to a blessed 2018 holiday season for each ofus and a 2019 that’s full of opportunity... and hope.
