Would you spend $10 to $20to keep your furnishings,floor coverings and keep-

sakes intact?Consider spending that money

on new washing machine hoses, andyou may be able to save yourselffrom a lot of inconvenience, messand the loss of items that couldnever be replaced.

Washing machine hose failurescause as much as $150 million indamage each year to homes in theUnited States and Canada. But bytaking a few precautions, you cangreatly reduce your chances of get-ting soaked by a leaky washingmachine hose.Inspect those hoses

Make it a point to periodicallyinspect your washing machinehoses for signs of wear and tear.Look for bubbles, cracks or fraying.If you see any of these signs, turnoff the water supply to your washerand replace the hoses.Can I replace them myself?

Replacing washing machinehoses is as easy as hooking up awater hose to a water spigot. And anew set of hoses costs between $10and $20 at most home repair, hard-ware and plumbing supply outlets.

To install new hoses, first shutoff the water supply to your wash-ing machine. Close the main shutoff

valve in your house if a valve clos-er to your washing machine is notavailable. Unscrew the old hosesone at a time, draining any waterinto the washing machine.

Carefully line up the threadsand screw the hoses on tightly.Once you’ve installed the newhoses, open the shutoff valves slow-

ly. Run the machine through a cycleand check carefully for leaks.

Carefully move the washerback toward the wall, keeping thehose free from kinks or tight bends.Allow at least four inches or 11 cen-timeters between the water connec-tion and the back of your washer.Anything else?• Turn off the water supply to thewasher if you plan to leave yourhome for more than one day. Mostwashing machine manufacturersrecommend shutting the water offanytime you are not using themachine.• Consider installing or having aprofessional plumber install a sin-gle-lever shutoff valve, whichmakes it easier to turn off the watersupply to your washing machine.• Another option is a water hammerarrestor, which absorbs increasedwater pressure when the electricvalve in your washer shuts off.There are types that easily attach tothe valves where your hose is con-nected.• Make sure everyone in your houseknows where the water shutoffvalve is and how to use it.
