SREBRENICA
SREBRENICA
Srebrenica is a city in the Eastern Bosnia, known in historical documents since 1387 as a mining city rich with silver finding places. With its thermal healing waters, Srebrenica was through history known as bathing-place. During 15 century it was resident of Bosnian Franciscans and the center of Franciscan province Bosna Srebrena (the Silver Bosnia). Until the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Srebrenica was mining center and majority of its citizens, almost 75%, were Bosnian Muslims – Bosniacs. During the aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Srebrenica become symbol of Bosniacs suffering for genocide committed by Serbs forces. After the World War Two, it was the biggest crime in the Europe. During the Bosnian war, Srebrenica was under protection of the UN, but it didn’t stop the Army of Bosnian Serbs to occupy it on 11 July 1995.

Captured men, even the boys and old men were brutally killed, women and children deported from this territory. The official statistics of the State Commission on Missing Persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina says that about 31.580 refugees, mainly women, children and old men from Srebrenica arrived at the free territory. Their husbands, sons, brothers and fathers, 8.000 in total, had never appeared. They ended up in the front of shooting detachments of Serbs soldiers, or in the forests while trying to escape. The list of 8.000 missing Srebrenica people, with their names, surnames, places of birth and places of disappearance, will remain forever as an evidence that these people were born, that they had been growing and living, thinking and wanting, loving and being loved – that they were humans.

LIFE IN THE CAMP
Mihatovici, a place 15 km of Tuzla presents a home for more than 1500 refugees from Podrinje (Srebrenica, Bratunac, Bijeljina, Zvornik, Brcko). This refugee camp was built in 1996 outside of the center of Tuzla, at the plateau and bare land with a view on the industrial part of Tuzla. Refugees in Mihatovici used to be previously accommodated in apartments and housing collective centers in Tuzla and area nearby. Apartments in the settlement Mihatovici are being shared and it is impossible for those people to have their intimacy and privacy,

a family life. Majority of refugees are women and children, left on their own. They don’t work, there is no mean of public transportation and with each visit of the new TV crew or journalists they are going to their trauma again and again. These women are deeply traumatized, but being closer to Tuzla means being closer to possibility that perhaps one day they might be called to identify and recognize their dearest, found out in the mass graves or forests.

GRAVES Although the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina ended
in November 1995, bodies of missing Srebrenica’s people are being looked for many years. All evidences of the crime were hidden. In 2001, in the village Mihatovici near Zvornik, two mass graves were found, the next 2002 - three new graves and five located mass graves to be exhumed in 2003. These are secondary mass graves where bodies had been transported from previous graves in order to hide a crime. Bodies were transported by using heavy machines (dredges and trucks) and therefore many of them are not complete and their remains are at different locations. It is obvious that victims were killed with bandages on eyes and hands. In the mass grave opened in July 2002, 244 bodies had been found and in the second one, opened in August of the same year 506 bodies, which is the biggest mass grave discovered at the wider area of Srebrenica. In October this year 74 bodies were exhumed from the third mass grave. The analyses of the soil from the graves showed that it comes from

different locations where executions were made, actually that primarily mass graves were in the place Kozluk near Zvornik and place Glogovo near Bratunac. As per estimation, there are remains of around 1000 of the killed Srebrenica’s people in the five mass graves, which will be opened in 2003. In the exhumation of these mass graves the following parties have been engaged: the Commission on Missing Persons of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lead by Mr. Murat Hurtic, who’s been working this job for six years and who participated in exhumation of 4000 bodies; Mr. Emin Halilcevic, a judge, Ms. Eva Klonowski from Island who’s helping the Federal team; members of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), Criminology departments of the Federal police and police of Republika Srpska; members of the UN and Commemorative Center Tuzla.

IDENTIFICATION
IDENTIFICATION
It has been estimated that it will be possible, by using of the classic, forensic methods (past mortem examination), even in combination of the reliable ante-mortem figures (physical characteristics, clothes, jewels and similar), to identify 5 – 6 percentage of the victims killed during the fall of Srebrenica in 1995. Luckily, this percentage is improved by using the newest discovery in the field of DNA analyses. By trying to increase a number of identified bodies, the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) started with pioneer program of DNA analyses within the Identification victims system in Bosnia and Hercegovina and the program itself started producing of great results. DNA-led identifications on this scale have never been tried before. The first identification in Bosnia and Herzegovina, through DNA analyses, was made on 16 November 2001 in the Commemorative Center Tuzla where are remains of about 4500 bodies of the killed Srebrenica’s people. Up to 15 November 2002, around 1200 identifications have been made, by using of this type of analyses.
Before DNA-led testing can assist in identification, a body must be recovered and a family member must donate a blood sample. After the exhumation of the remains, the authorized pathologist takes a part (sample) from the bones or teeth and sends them in the Center for Identification which is located in Tuzla. In this ICMP center, those samples are being photographed, recorded and coded in order to keep them secret. Once they are coded, they are being sent to the DNA laboratory. The DNA profile made from the sample of bone or teeth is being sent to Tuzla in order to be saved in the centralized computer system. If data are matched after the DNA analyses, the report has been sent to the pathologist who sent the sample. In order to make this program successful as much as possible, a cooperation of all parties included in this process is necessary (members of families, domestic and international pathologists and anthropologists, donors and ICMP members).

Srebrenica women are insisting on the following three things: To come back to their homes that are destroyed and burnt down. Missing persons of their families to be found and buried decently. Those who committed this crime to be condemned.
They don’t ask for revenge. None of these requests has been fulfilled so far, although this tragedy happened almost seven years ago. Each of these women lost almost all male members of their family - children, husband, brother, close relatives. They are living in the refugee camps, in very difficult conditions, poverty and illness. They established own association named Association of mother from Srebrenica and Podrinje. They succeeded their dearest to be buried in the Memorial center – Potocari. The burial of the first identified Srebrenica’s person is planned for January 2003.

GRAFFITO
Graffito were made on the walls of Accumulator factory in place Potocari near Srebrenica where, during the fall of this enclave, was located the Dutch battalion while serving the humanitarian mission in Srebrenica under the UN. As per UN Resolution, Srebrenica was one of the five protected zones in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dutch soldiers made graffito during their service in Srebrenica and they represent their attitude at that time. During the fall of Srebrenica in July 1995, many of Srebrenica’s citizens found help in the UN base in Potocari. At that specific place exactly, in front of the Dutch soldiers, men were separated from their families and taken away. The Serb government is still protesting against including of the Accumulators factory, where one Serb currently runs own wood industry, into the Memorial center, to be built in Potocari.
